Book excerpt: Ever since I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1987 at the young age of seventeen, I had to learn to “depend” on others instead of being “Ms. Independent.” I would have never gotten through my exacerbations (attacks) as easily if it weren’t for my courageous, strong, and inspiring mom, Georgia, who helped me get through day-to-day life with the simple things we all take for granted in our lives. I remember back when I was in high school, thinking I was really heavy. All the kids used to laugh at me and call me names like “thunder thighs,” “lard ass,” “big ass” . . . you name it, they called me it. I was embarrassed when it was PE time, I didn’t want to put those skimpy little shorts on, you know the ones back in the ’80s that barely covered your butt cheeks. My thighs stuck out a mile, and I tried covering them up by tying a jacket or shirt around my waste so it would hang over my thighs. I couldn’t run easily because of my weight and asthma. The other kids used to tease me and laugh at me, and I felt like such an outcast. I hated being me. I hated the fact I inherited the “fat” gene and that no matter what new diet I tried, I would lose a few pounds and put it right back on, plus some. During my “honeymoon” period (first six months after surgery) I had to learn a new eating “lifestyle.” It was definitely a learning process, that’s for sure. Once I was able to eat solid foods, I had to try different things to see what my new pouch would tolerate. My surgeons warned me that certain foods might cause “dumping,” which is rapid gastric emptying, also known as dumping syndrome. The total weight I actually lost was 155 pounds! Researchers are finding that 30 percent of weight loss surgery patients have stopped overeating but wind up acquiring a new compulsive disorder such as alcoholism, gambling addiction, compulsive shopping, drugs, promiscuity, or started smoking. Some psychologists describe it as a type of “addiction transfer,” an outcome of substance-abuse treatment where the patient swaps one compulsive behavior for another. The behavior has long been explained as a psychological phenomenon as patients seek new strategies for filling an inner void. Within one month of me having gastric bypass surgery, my endocrinologist asked me to come in for testing for the lumps in my neck. He referred me to a specialist who will conduct biopsies. When I went in to see my endo, she informed me that I have thyroid cancer (malignant) and I will have to have a surgery called a total thyroidectomy. On August 3, I saw my hematologist. He went over my blood work and informed me that my blood levels are low and that a blood transfusion would help me feel better. I would notice a difference within two to three days. He also told me my iron levels were extremely low and I will need to have Iron Infusions every day for the first week, then weekly. Then as time goes by, he’ll adjust how often I get the iron (based on my weekly lab results). My B-12 levels were also extremely low, so I will start B-12 shots weekly at first then go to monthly thereafter.

Book excerpt: Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (September 24, 1896 – December 21, 1940) was an American author of novels and short stories, whose works are the paradigmatic writings of the Jazz Age. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. Fitzgerald is considered a member of the "Lost Generation" of the 1920s. He finished four novels: "This Side of Paradise", "The Beautiful and Damned", "The Great Gatsby" (his most famous), and "Tender Is the Night". A fifth, unfinished novel, "The Love of the Last Tycoon", was published posthumously. Fitzgerald also wrote many short stories that treat themes of youth and promise along with age and despair. Fitzgerald's work has been adapted into films many times. His short story, "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", was the basis for a 2008 film. "Tender Is the Night" was filmed in 1962, and made into a television miniseries in 1985. "The Beautiful and Damned" was filmed in 1922 and 2010. "The Great Gatsby" has been the basis for numerous films of the same name, spanning nearly 90 years: 1926, 1949, 1974, 2000, and 2013 adaptations. In addition, Fitzgerald's own life from 1937 to 1940 was dramatized in 1958 in "Beloved Infidel".

Book excerpt: T. S. Lewis's first series: Embers of Night opens with unrelenting break-neck action, earth-shattering powers, a newfound love, and evil so insurmountable, the boundaries of contemporary fantasy tremble in the wake of Red Horizon's debut. Gavin DeMaze discovers every corner of the world— is coming for him. He and his brother Ryan become immersed in a struggle between two ancient and powerful factions. As a Deviant infestation threatens humanity— it’s up to the DeMaze brothers to band together a broken legion of Paladins, to bring order and peace to both the physical and spiritual worlds. When both worlds fall to chaos, only the few have the power to survive, only the Paladins can push back the darkness. Quieter than a shadow's movement or spider's step, a sinister evil spreads. Embers of Night: Red Horizon is a ground-breaking tale that tests the limits of siblings, allies, and rivals. It promises frightening landscapes, budding romances, faceless souls, and immeasurable odds, where the stakes are higher than ever. To survive here, you’ll need more than cunning, you’ll need more than guns. Shadows move in the night, and corpses of long dead monsters rise to transcend the confines of time and biology… even bullets can’t stop them.

Cinder, a similarly powered villain who has bested her at every encounter, offers to train her if Abigail owes him a favor: A way out of the city. Falling in love wasn’t part of the deal. Book excerpt: “Rip-roaring legal thriller...Twisty, bloody, and convincing.” —Ian Rankin An innocent client. A wife in jeopardy. Who will take The Plea? When billionaire David Child is arrested for the murder of his girlfriend, Clara, the FBI believes they can get him to testify and take down a huge money laundering scheme. Con-artist-turned-lawyer Eddie Flynn is given the job: persuade David to plead guilty and give the agents the evidence they need. If Eddie can’t get David to take a plea bargain, the FBI has incriminating files on Eddie’s wife – and will send her to jail. But David swears he didn’t murder anyone. The evidence overwhelmingly shows that David killed Clara: the security video showed no one else entering their apartment, the murder weapon was in his car, and he was covered in gunshot residue he can’t explain. Yet as the FBI pressures Eddie to secure the guilty plea, Eddie becomes increasingly convinced that David is telling the truth. With adversaries threatening, Eddie has to find a way to prove David’s innocence and find out if there’s any way he might have been framed. But the stakes are high: Eddie’s wife is in danger. And not just from the FBI... The Plea is a locked room mystery from Steve Cavanagh, the author Nelson DeMille compares to John Grisham, Scott Turow, and Brad Meltzer. “The Plea is one of the most purely entertaining books you'll read this year. It's a blast.” —John Connolly, bestselling author of the Charlie Parker novels

Book excerpt: An entrancing sci-fi retelling of the classic fairy tale. Once upon a time, an alien prince craving solitude docked his spaceship above the snowy Montana mountains. Unbeknownst to him, a small-town beauty searched for her missing father in the lonely winter woods… When Corinne Kaminski volunteers to take her father’s place on the alien’s sprawling, desolate ship, she regards it as a death sentence. But just as the alien promised, no harm befalls her in her strange new home, where the walls talk, a dense hothouse flourishes, and sim rooms transport the user to any place imaginable. The ship’s only other occupant, Del, is shocking to look at. Beastly, some might say. But Corinne finds herself unable to look away. Yet a gilded cage is still a cage, and Corinne longs for freedom. Her instincts might be pushing her toward friendship with Del—and something more than friendship, perhaps—but at what cost? In this enthralling reimagining of Beauty and the Beast, slow-burn romance mixes with alien abduction. This new series will transport readers to an enchanted sci-fi world of secrets, intrigue, and spellbinding romance.
