Book excerpt: BloodFresh is a celebration of identity. Ebony Stewart reclaims her own narrative to speak against the racism and colorism she’s experienced, while criticizing society’s treatment of women as sexual objects. This collection reaffirms the reader through storytelling as an open letter to retell, acknowledge, overcome, and learn new ways to use poetry as a coping technique. As BloodFresh reflects the importance of owning your own space, Stewart carves out a home for herself, her poems, and all of the readers who take refuge in her words.

Download or read book Something in the Blood written by Phillip Messinger and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2021-02-18 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a child, Chris thought he wanted to be a doctor, but a visit to a training ship convinced him that his future lay at sea. Jonathan on the other hand decided to study medicine but always had a hankering for faraway places, and had a rather romanticised view of the sea based on some of his father’s reminiscences. Fate would bring them together, and in an action-packed account this book explores the way in which they re-visited their early aspirations, and decided if indeed they should have followed a different course. They pursued their careers, but always with the occasional thought that, maybe, they had been swayed by circumstances into the wrong direction.

Download or read book Ischemic Blood Flow in the Brain written by Y. Fukuuchi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because stroke is essentially a disease of the vessels and blood flow, the most fundamental aspects of ischemic blood flow in the brain are under investigation by researchers. Their work was the focus of the sixth in the series of Keio University International Symposia for Life Sciences and Medicine, held in Tokyo in 1999. Selected here are 55 papers from the symposium, covering the buffy coat (glycocalyx) of endothelial cells, the blood-brain barrier and permeability, gene expression, vascular reactivity, dysregulation, inflammatory deterioration, cortical spreading depression, edema, microvascular derangement, and pathology, in ten major sections. The book includes the thought-provoking discussions that followed the presentations, thus providing an invaluable source of up-to-date information not only for researchers investigating microcirculation but also for clinicians implementing the most effective treatment for stroke patients.

Book Synopsis Acute Blood Purification by : Hiromichi Suzuki
Download or read book Acute Blood Purification written by Hiromichi Suzuki and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acute organ damage and the ensuing multiple organ failure are the result of a pathophysiological process involving various cytokines. Once activated, these proteins cannot be eliminated even when the kidneys function at their maximum capacity. To counteract this mechanism, researchers in Japan have developed an innovative concept employing blood purification to remove the overwhelming cytokines. This book describes the use of hemodiafiltration to inhibit the cytokine storms which cause serious organ damage in patients with septic shock. Moreover, the technical construction of the blood purification system, which includes various machines, devices, membranes, fluids, etc., is explained in detail. Finally, leading experts discuss the concept of continuous renal replacement therapy as the standard care in critically ill patients with severe acute kidney injury. Describing the current state of acute blood purification, this publication provides new impulses and opens new avenues in the treatment of acute organ damage.

Book Synopsis Blood Use in Cardiac Surgery by : N. Friedel
Download or read book Blood Use in Cardiac Surgery written by N. Friedel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiac surgery has developed dramatically since the first open-he art operations were performed in the mid 1950s. Although the improvement of surgical technique, extracorporeal circulation, and postoperative management has contributed to a marked reduction of morbidity and mortality, the development of cardiac surgery to its present state would not have been possible without blood substitution by homologous donor blood. Only 20 years ago, open-heart operations required an average of 8 units of blood preserves. The excessive need of donor blood in those early days was mainly due to premature surgical technique, insecure control of anticoagulation, severe blood trauma by extracorporeal circulation, and the lack of retransfusion technologies that would have allowed the reuse of shed mediastinal blood. The introduction of new technologies, such as normovolemic hemodilution, in traoperative autotransfusion, postoperative return of shed mediastinal blood, and predonation of autologous blood has greatly reduced donor blood requirements. At present the majority of routine coronary artery surgical procedures can be performed without any blood transfusion. Blood loss, however, may be considerable in patients undergoing complex valve surgery or reoperations, as they often require several units of transfused blood. Blood conservation has now become an area of major interest for the cardiac surgeon. This increased concern is caused by infectious complications of blood transfusion, in particular hepatitis and, more recently, AIDS.
