These insects cause only limited plant damage to alfalfa and soybeans. Striped blister beetle, Epicauta vittata, and other species of blister beetles, may occur in large numbers within localized areas of soybean and alfalfa fields during July and August. Rapid defoliation can occur, but the real problem with blister beetles is that they produce cantharidin, a toxin which, when ingested by horses, can cause the animals to become sick and possibly die. This publication provides some general information about blister beetles, their effect on livestock, and guidelines for reducing the number of these beetles in alfalfa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise, practical text covers the essential information veterinary students need to succeed in equine medicine and surgery, focussing on skin, urinary, liver and endocrine diseases. Written for an international readership, the book conveys the core information in an easily digestible, precise form with extensive use of bullet points, tables, flow charts, diagrams, lists, protocols and extensive illustrations. Part of a five-book series that extracts and updates key information from Munroe’s Equine Surgery, Reproduction and Medicine, Second Edition, the book distils best practice in a logical straightforward clinical-based approach. It details clinical anatomy, physical clinical examination techniques, diagnostic techniques and normal parameters, emphasising the things regularly available to general practitioners with minimal information of advanced techniques. The liver section is divided into clinical evaluation, diagnostic tests, possible causes and treatment The diagnostic approach to endocrine disease is followed by specific diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid, pituitary gland, equine metabolic syndrome and other miscellaneous disorders The approach to urinary tract problems includes information on diagnostic tests and imaging, renal diseases and diseases of the ureter, bladder and urethra The approach to skin disease is discussed in detail, including relevant diagnostic tests. Following this, individual skin diseases are covered under the headings of genetic, infectious, immune-mediated, nutritional, endocrine, idiopathic, traumatic and neoplastic causes Finally, skin wounds, burns and infections of synovial structures are discussed Ideal for veterinary students and nurses on clinical placements with horses as well as practitioners needing a quick reference ‘on the ground’.

Download or read book Equine Clinical Medicine, Surgery and Reproduction written by Graham Munroe and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 1408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully-revised new edition of the best-selling Equine Clinical Medicine, Surgery and Reproduction is supported by over 1800 illustrations of the highest quality: colour photographs, diagnostic images including MRI and CT, and diagrams. System-based, the chapters introduce each individual system with precise information on the relevant basic anatomy and physiology, standard clinical examination techniques and useful differential diagnostic aids. This is followed by diseases and disorders that are pertinent to that system, grouped together either anatomically or based on presenting clinical signs. Each condition is described using consistent headings: definition/overview, etiology and pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, differential diagnoses, management/treatment, and prognosis. Additional chapters deal with the foal and wounds. New to the second edition: - All chapters are updated throughout - Additional chapters on the axial musculoskeletal system (neck, back and pelvis) and muscle diseases and problems - A whole new section on soft tissue injuries of the foot - More information on diagnostic tests including over-ground endoscopy, chest and liver ultrasonography, head CT, and foot MRI - Material on equine dentistry, neurology, endocrine system, the foal, and the liver has been considerably expanded - All illustrations and photographs have been reviewed and many replaced with higher quality images. The focus throughout remains on providing clinically relevant information required for practical case management, plus sufficient background on causes and disease processes to enable readers to understand the conditions and the rationale for diagnostic and treatment options. An international group of respected clinicians have come together under the editorship of Dr Graham Munroe to create a textbook that will be of lasting value as a teaching and training resource for equine clinical teachers and their students in veterinary medicine and related equine courses, as well as a ready reference for non-specialist mixed or equine clinical practitioners
Book Synopsis Medical and Veterinary Entomology by : Gary R. Mullen
Download or read book Medical and Veterinary Entomology written by Gary R. Mullen and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first and second editions of Medical and Veterinary Entomology, edited by Gary R. Mullen and Lance A. Durden, published in 2002 and 2009, respectively, have been highly praised and become widely used as a textbook for classroom instruction. This fully revised third edition continues the focus on the diversity of arthropods affecting human and animal health, with separate chapters devoted to each of the taxonomic groups of insects and arachnids of medical or veterinary concern, including spiders, scorpions, mites, and ticks. Each chapter includes sections on taxonomy, morphology, life history, and behavior and ecology, with separate sections on those species of public-health and veterinary importance. Each concludes with approaches to management of pest species and prevention of arthropod-borne diseases. The third edition provides a comprehensive source for teaching medical and/or veterinary entomology at the college and university level, targeted particularly at upper-level undergraduate and graduate/postgraduate programs. In addition to its value as a student textbook, the volume has appeal to a much broader audience, specialists and non-specialists alike. It provides a key reference for biologists in general, entomologists, zoologists, parasitologists, physicians, public-health personnel, veterinarians, wildlife biologists, vector biologists, military entomologists, the general public and others seeking a readable, authoritative account on this important topic. Completely revised and updated edition Includes a distinguished group of 40 nationally and internationally recognized contributors Sixteen new authors, in addition to 25 continuing contributors from the first and second editions A new chapter on Arthropod Toxins and Venoms Illustrated with 560, mostly color, figures and updated maps depicting the distribution of important arthropod taxa and arthropod-borne diseases A significantly expanded and well-illustrated chapter on Molecular Tools Used in Medical and Veterinary Entomology Coverage of emerging and newly recognized arthropod concerns, including mosquito-borne Zika and Chikungunya viruses; tick-borne Bourbon and Heartland viruses; tick-borne rickettsioses and anaplasmosis; and red meat allergy associated with tick bites A 1700-word Glossary An Appendix of Arthropod-Related Viruses of Medical and Veterinary Importance
