He repeated the success of Dodo, with sequels to this novel, but the greatest success came relatively late in his career with The Mapp and Lucia series consisting of six novels and two short stories. Book Synopsis The Bach Choir: The First Hundred Years by : Basil Keen
Download or read book The Bach Choir: The First Hundred Years written by Basil Keen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the Bach Choir provides a much-needed overview of one of the major choral societies in London. Dr Basil Keen examines the background that led to the formation of an ad hoc body to give the first performance in England of J.S. Bach's B minor Mass. The musical and organizational effects of a permanent choral society drawn from one social group are traced during the first twenty years, after such time the pressures of social change led to a complete review followed by a restructuring of the methods of recruitment and internal organization. The rebuilding of the choir at the opening of the twentieth century, the expansion of the repertoire, the upheaval resulting from the First World War and the impact of these events on preparation and performance, are all considered. The book is essentially structured around the tenure of successive Musical Directors: Otto Goldschmidt, Charles Villiers Stanford, Walford Davies, Hugh Allen, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Adrian Boult, Reginald Jacques and David Willcocks, since their varied tastes and interests inevitably had a decisive influence on policy. Keen draws upon previously unpublished material, including minutes and correspondence of the Bach Choir, interviews with relatives and descendants, and examination of family records and correspondence. To date, there has been no survey of a major London choir that encompasses the full history of the organization in context. In this study, Dr Basil Keen provides a thorough examination of the Bach Choir, including the response of the choir to social changes; the influence of conductors and officials; changes in musical taste; relationships with composers and composition; major national and international events; and the effect of these matters on organization and repertoire.

Book Synopsis The Reception of P. B. Shelley in Europe by : Susanne Schmid
Download or read book The Reception of P. B. Shelley in Europe written by Susanne Schmid and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2008-10-21 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The widespread and culturally significant impact of Percy Bysshe Shelley's writings in Europe constitutes a particularly interesting case for a reception study because of the variety of responses they evoked. If radical readers cherished the 'red' Shelley, others favoured the lyrical poet, whose work was, like Byron's, anthologized and set to music. His major dramatic works, The Cenci and Prometheus Unbound, inspired numerous fin-de-siècle and expressionist dramatists and producers from Paris to Moscow. Shelley was read by, and influenced, the novelist Stendhal, the political theorist Engels, the Spanish symbolist Jiménez, and the Russian modernist poet Akhmatova. This exciting collection of essays by an international team of leading scholars considers translations, critical and biographical reviews, fictionalizations of his life, and other creative responses. It probes into transnational cross-currents to demonstrate the depth of Shelley's impact on European culture since his death in 1822. It will be an indispensable research resource for academics, critics, and writers with interests in Romanticism and its legacies.

Book Synopsis The Worshipful Lucia & Trouble for Lucia by : E. F. Benson
Download or read book The Worshipful Lucia & Trouble for Lucia written by E. F. Benson and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2015-11-10 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: E. F. Benson’s beloved Mapp and Lucia novels are sparkling, classic comedies of manners set against the petty snobberies and competitive maneuverings of English village society in the 1920s and 1930s. The Worshipful Lucia (1935; published in the UK as Lucia’s Progress) and Trouble for Lucia (1939) are the last two novels in Benson’s series. They chronicle the ongoing battles of his famous characters—Mrs. Lucia Lucas and Miss Elizabeth Mapp—in the idyllic seaside village of Tilling, which proves too small to contain both of them. While both are hypocritical snobs, Lucia is animated by marvelous delusions of grandeur and Mapp by insatiable curiosity and chronic rage; their epic collisions rock their small society and provide the narrative engines for Benson’s gloriously farcical masterpieces.
