Book excerpt: This book offers contemporary perspectives on different registers of instruction, media language, the effectiveness of a multi-literacies program for introducing English as a Foreign Language, promoting religious tolerance through literature and music, teaching drama, intercultural communication, gender studies and literature studies. By using contemporary research methods, the contributors here offer insights into the ways in which the world of languages and literatures changes and evolves to face the constant challenges resulting from new instructional practices and research investigations, allowing educators, researchers and students alike to keep up with, and stay current in, all areas relating to language and literature. These illuminating essays highlight the dynamic global prism through which contemporary scholars view these issues and surpass any strict set of rules, which would otherwise lead them to ignore the ever-shifting changes in language and literature and the accompanying cultural spaces and realities.

Book excerpt: The tragedies of Bosnia and Kosovo are often explained away as the unchangeable legacy of 'centuries-old hatreds'. In this richly detailed, expertly balanced chronicle of the Balkans across fifteen centuries, Hupchick sets a complicated record straight. Organized around the three great civilizations of the region - Western European, Orthodox Christian and Muslim - this is a much-needed guide to the political, social, cultural and religious threads of Balkan history, with a clear, convincing account of the reasons for nationalist violence and terror.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gendering Post-Socialist Transition presents economic, political, social, and cultural effects and traces of system changes in the lives of women and men after 1989 in 11 countries of Central and Southeastern Europe. The contributions by nine research teams from different countries look into the meaning of these changes for the relationships between men and women, for gender roles and representations, and for the development of normative discourses about femininity and masculinity. With respect to gender relations, these case studies deal with changing values and mentalities in transformation and once again show that poverty, social exclusion, nationalism, social systems, and healthcare systems all have a profound gendered dimension. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Values Across Cultures and Times is a collection of sixteen articles examining the concept of values understood in its broadest sense as the need of the modern man to examine, redefine, and reconstruct previous theories, histories, moralities, social relationships, forms of language and language use. In times of great change, preserving traditional values seems to be particularly difficult, and the authors of these essays respond to the challenge, and approach the notion of changing values from the perspectives of literary studies and linguistics. The book opens with an introductory overview, followed by sixteen articles divided into three sections. The book is aimed at a broad academic audience, while the popular style of the articles also makes the volume appealing to a wider audience interested in different aspects of values. The authors of the articles come from Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania, and the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conditionals encode speculation. They convey how events could have been different in the past or present, or might be different in the future if particular conditions had been or will be met. While all languages afford the means to speculate or hypothesize about possible events, the ways in which they do so vary. This work explores some of this variation through an analysis of the stucture and semantics of complex conditional sentences in Russian and Macedonian. It addresses typological questions about the general properties of natural language conditionals and examines the role of the grammatical categories tense, aspect, mood and status in the coding of conditional meaning. The book also discusses the relationship between the use of these categories and the shape of a language's conditional system. For example, the use of tense in counterfactual contexts in Macedonian correlates with the grammaticalization of more shades of conditional meaning than are grammaticalized in Russian, which does not employ tense forms in this way. The study draws on data from a rich variety of sources and thus includes kinds of conditionals overlooked in many other studies. The book addresses issues of concern to Slavists and raises questions for those interested in conditionals and the coding of hypothetical meaning.
