Eleven interviews with Black parents were completed and analyzed qualitatively using the grounded theory approach (Corbin & Strauss, 2008) and the case study method (Yin, 2009). Parental involvement has been identified as a factor that influences student academic outcomes from preschool through high school (Henderson & Berla, 1994). Research has found Black families are more likely to be involved at home when compared to White families; however, White families are more likely to be involved at school when compared to Black families (Eccles & Harold, 1996). Since research on African American families has centered on families at racially segregated public schools, there has been little investigation of the experiences of Black families in predominantly White school settings. Given the historical context of the education of Blacks in America and parent concerns with the social and emotional development of their children within school settings, African American families at predominantly White schools may engage in parent involvement practices that do not follow the traditional framework of parent involvement accepted by schools and researched in the literature. This study revealed several themes connected to African American parent involvement at predominantly White schools. These themes were the importance of education, cross-racial tensions, parent self-efficacy, biculturalism and cultural competence. Implications for future research were discussed. Recommendations were made for Black parents, educators, school counseling personnel and school-sponsored parent organizations regarding the improvement of Black parent involvement in activities and programs at predominantly White schools.

The book offers a comprehensive look at the factors that contribute to the test score gap and discusses options for substantially reducing it. Although significant attempts have been made over the past three decades to shrink the test score gap, including increased funding for predominantly black schools, desegregation of southern schools, and programs to alleviate poverty, the median black American still scores below 75 percent of American whites on most standardized tests. The book brings together recent evidence on some of the most controversial and puzzling aspects of the test score debate, including the role of test bias, heredity, and family background. It also looks at how and why the gap has changed over the past generation, reviews the educational, psychological, and cultural explanations for the gap, and analyzes its educational and economic consequences. The authors demonstrate that traditional explanations account for only a small part of the black-white test score gap. They argue that this is partly because traditional explanations have put too much emphasis on racial disparities in economic resources, both in homes and in schools, and on demographic factors like family structure. They say that successful theories will put more emphasis on psychological and cultural factors, such as the way black and white parents teach their children to deal with things they do not know or understand, and the way black and white children respond to the same classroom experiences. Finally, they call for large-scale experiments to determine the effects of schools' racial mix, class size, ability grouping, and other policies. Book excerpt: Parental involvement has been associated positively with school success across ethnic groups (Hong & Ho, 2005). Yet, some African American parents were found to be more alienated from school than were White parents (Abrams & Gibbs, 2002). One of the most consistent findings in educational research is the under achievement of African American males (Lee, 2003), and a recent report chronicled the pervasive and systematic failure of public schools to educate African American males (Schott, 2008). In the southeastern region, only 40% of African American males graduate from high school (Schott); however, in the post-Civil Rights era, advances in racial equity in education and other arenas of society have created a growing African American middle class (McKinnon, 2003). The southeast region has the largest percent of affluent African Americans (Miller, 2002), and a growing number of these upper middle class African American parents are sending their children to private schools because they are dissatisfied with the lack of rigor in the public school experience (Freedman,2004). This is a new phenomenon that warrants study. Currently, there are no empirical studies on middle class African American parents who send their children to private schools. The purpose of this study was to explore the ways 12 African American couples of middle school boys experience a predominantly White elite private school. To undertake this qualitative investigation, a phenomenological approach incorporating grounded theory was utilized. This research approach is well suited for exploratory investigation of phenomena that are not yet clearly defined within the literature (Creswell, 1998). Data were collected from the couple interviews, focus group, demographic information, and reflexive journal. Five overarching themes emerged from the analysis of the data: better opportunity/brand, parental connection, selective engagement, parental struggle, and parental marginalization. These results are informative and significant to research and practice. Ultimately, it is hoped that this study may contribute to the efforts of providing a quality education to African American male students and satisfaction to their parents in the areas of diversity and inclusion at predominantly White elite private schools.

In the district of Columbia, African American parents from a poor background complained about totally overcrowded all black-schools and the resulting low education for their children. In Wilmington, Delaware, African American parents were no longer willing to accept the inferior state of their children's schools, especially in comparison to the far higher standards of the schools for white children, which were exclusively given the opportunity to improve out of the educational dilemma all schools in that state were in before. In Prince Edward County, Virginia, students of the all-black Moton High School decided to strike for their demands for "facilities equal to those provided to white high school students as required by law" (Peeples). Their school was build for 180 students but used to teach 450 by 1951 and has therefore been ruled inadequate as early as 1947. " (...) In Topeka, Kansas black parents sought to reverse policies under which their children were traveling to black schools far from home while passing white schools closer to home" (Willie, 30). These five cases were combined to form the base of the lawsuit called Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, which overturned the 'separate but equal' decision of Plessy v. Ferguson from 1896. First of all the attorneys of the Richmond NAACP, Oliver Hill and Spottswood Robinson persuaded the students of Moton High School to turn their energies on challenging school segregation, which at that time was the state of educational law in Virginia, instead of only seeking equal facilities. They told them if they would do so, they would represent them in court. Secondly, some members of the Topeka's local NAACP chapter initiated the case which followed the refusal of Topeka's Board of Education to enroll twenty African American children to all-white schools to end their daily lot of long distance traveling to remote all-black schools. Their thirteen parents, one of them Oliver Brown who then became the major plaintiff, filed a lawsuit on the behalf of that children to ensure them admission to the schools closer to their homes. The district court ruled in favor of the board referring to the 'seperate but equal' decision by the Supreme Court in 1896.
