Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elegant, trumpet-like lilies, she thought. But there was something off. Something not right. It was the color. It was strange, sort of pale and flesh-colored... In a sleepy seaside town outside Copenhagen, a strange light at the bottom of the harbor has the police call in a military diver with a speciality in wet crime scenes. Deep down in the dark water sits a car with the dead body of a young woman in the driver’s seat. She has a long cut in her lower abdomen. Copenhagen Police’s Felix Jørgensen is on the case, and his new deputy Kathrine Nymark gets thrown in the deep end on her very first day on the job, when it becomes clear that a brutal murderer is on the loose. On some jagged cliffs off a rural district in the south of Norway, a dog walker finds a partly skeletal corpse wearing a wetsuit. At first, the police assume it's just another drowning incident, but the victim doesn’t match any people reported missing and then there’s also that suture thread in her abdomen. Black Notice is a crime story told in five parts. Partly based on actual events, Black Notice tells the thrilling story of the international hunt for a ruthless serial killer. Lotte Petri is a Danish author of crime fiction. In 2009, her first book was nominated for Danske Bank’s Newcomer of the Year Award. Her Selma Eliassen series was lauded by critics, and in 2017, the first book in the series starring bone expert Josefine Jespersen, "The Devil’s Work", was released.

Book excerpt: Amygdala Hijack - The Waening (Part 1 of 3), Episodes 1 - 9 [eBook: #Dystopian, #Apocalyptic, #GeneticEngineering] ______________________ A golden obelisk crash lands on a Saskatchewan farm and warns of an impending alien invasion. Searching for silver linings, science podcaster Peter Scott and his small team use this ominous event to improve their sagging ratings. They capitalize on growing fears of invasion by interviewing experts with unorthodox solutions to defend Earth. But 2037 is no ordinary year. DNA is just another programming language, and CRISPR-centric body-altering tech is now a plaything for the masses. Humans are hybridizing at breakneck speed, sporting subdermal chips, animal traits, and flesh-metal integrations. While radical new tech spins off the rails, society convulses violently at the pace of change as biases and hatreds escalate between humans and hybrids. Conservatives vs. Progressives; Majorities vs. Minorities; Humans vs. Hybrids, and now Humanity vs. Aliens...where will it all end? Yet alien marauders and social disruptions aren't the only challenges. Shadowy forces are threatening to kill the podcast – or the team. Is there any hope of escaping their dire predicament? 5 Stars***** Imminent Future, or Imminent Extinction? A fascinating leap into the imminent future...when Genetic Engineering and Genetic Modification have advanced astronomically (Goodreads Review). https://bladecort.com PREDICTABLE PATHS episodes, in sequential order: 1. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the rhetorical strategies used by celebrities and their surrogates and attorneys when faced with claims of sexual misconduct. During the past five years, a series of public figures has claimed that their celebrity persona is distinct from their “real” self as a way of eluding allegations of sexual misconduct in the courthouse and in the court of public opinion. This book examines three case studies in which such claims were employed, namely Terry Bollea/Hulk Hogan, President Donald Trump/Reality Show Host Donald Trump, and R. Kelly/Robert Kelly, to assess the mediated and legal communicative strategies used and their potential implications. Using a technique which the author calls “discursive self-cleaving,” these stars strategically craft statements on social media, in the press, and in the courtroom to create a discourse that works to shift blame away from their behavior. The book also traces the relationship between these discursive approaches and the politics of sexual violence and domestic abuse during the early months of the #MeToo movement and beyond. Providing a richly detailed analysis of how this discourse functions and why jurors and members of the public find it convincing, this book will be of interest to students and scholars in the field of communication studies, rhetoric, media, law, and popular culture studies.

Book excerpt: Israel Pelletier argues that Trois contes demands a different kind of reading which distinguishes it from Madame Bovary and other Flaubert texts. By the time he wrote this late work, Flaubert's attitude toward his characters and the role of fiction had changed to accommodate different social, political, and literary pressures. He constructed two opposing levels of meaning for each of the stories, straight and ironic, which produced a more fruitful way of addressing some of his concerns and assumptions about langauge and illusion. Included in this study are a provocative feminist reading of Un Coeur, an assessment of Saint Julien as Flaubert's attempt to come to terms with his originality as a writer, and an interpretation of Hérodias as an autobiography of the writing process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hegemonic Mimicry, Kyung Hyun Kim considers the recent global success of Korean popular culture—the Korean wave of pop music, cinema, and television, which is also known as hallyu—from a transnational and transcultural perspective. Using the concept of mimicry to think through hallyu's adaptation of American sensibilities and genres, he shows how the commercialization of Korean popular culture has upended the familiar dynamic of major-to-minor cultural influence, enabling hallyu to become a dominant global cultural phenomenon. At the same time, its worldwide popularity has rendered its Koreanness opaque. Kim argues that Korean cultural subjectivity over the past two decades is one steeped in ethnic rather than national identity. Explaining how South Korea leaped over the linguistic and cultural walls surrounding a supposedly “minor” culture to achieve global ascendance, Kim positions K-pop, Korean cinema and television serials, and even electronics as transformative acts of reappropriation that have created a hegemonic global ethnic identity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Political Sublime Michael J. Shapiro formulates an original politics of aesthetics through an analysis of the experience of the sublime. Turning away from Kant's analysis of the sublime experience as a validation of the existence of a universal common sense, Shapiro draws on Deleuze, Lyotard, and Rancière to show how incomprehensible events and dilemmas provide openings for new political formations. He approaches the sublime through a range of artistic and cultural texts that address social crises and natural disasters, from the writing of James Baldwin and Ta-Nehisi Coates to the films of Ingmar Bergman and Spike Lee; these works suggest ways to channel the disruptive effects of the sublime into resistance to authority and innovative political initiative. Whether stemming from the threat of nuclear annihilation or the aftermath of an earthquake, the violence of racism and terrorism or the devastation of industrialism, sublime experience, Shapiro contends, allows for a rethinking of events in ways that reveal, redistribute, and create conditions of possibility for alternative communities of sense.

Dr. Cosby shows how American media establishments have engineered a climate of ignorance and disenfranchisement by fostering misinformation and indifference. She maintains that a national viewers' boycott of programming containing such negative images is the first step towards making the television industry face up to its responsibility as the most powerful communications tool in our nation. Book excerpt: Have you ever been a beautiful plant surrounded by thorns that fight your beauty to hide their own ugliness? Have people fought you simply because you were an example of goodness and success? This is the story of a man who sold the world and bought with its price the smiles of the weak and the widows. He walked the path to paradise even before hearing a verse from the Quran. Here too, the armies of hatred are preparing to fight Muhammad (peace be upon him), who revealed the darkness of their hearts with the purity of his own. The Quraysh tribe disputes and almost fights, but he reconciles their differences, thereby enhancing his position in society before being sent as a messenger by God
