Book excerpt: How neoliberalism and the politics of respectability are transforming African American manhood While single-sex public schools face much criticism, many Black communities see in them a great promise: that they can remedy a crisis for their young men. Black Boys Apart reveals triumphs, hope, and heartbreak at two all-male schools, a public high school and a charter high school, drawing on Freeden Blume Oeur’s ethnographic work. We meet young men who felt their schools empowered and emasculated them, parents who were frustrated with co-ed schools, teachers who helped pave the road to college, and administrators who saw in Black male academies the advantages of privatizing education. While the two schools have distinctive histories and ultimately charted different paths, they were both shaped by the convergence of neoliberal ideologies and a politics of Black respectability. As Blume Oeur reveals, all-boys education is less a school reform initiative and instead joins a legacy of efforts to reform Black manhood during periods of stark racial inequality. Black male academies join long-standing attempts to achieve racial uplift in Black communities, but in ways that elevate exceptional young men and aggravate divisions within those communities. Black Boys Apart shows all-boys schools to be an odd mix of democratic empowerment and market imperatives, racial segregation and intentional sex separation, strict discipline and loving care. Challenging narratives that endorse these schools for nurturing individual resilience in young Black men, this perceptive and penetrating ethnography argues for a holistic approach in which Black communities and their allies promote a collective resilience.

Psychologist and academic Malose Langa has documented graphically what it means to be a young black man in contemporary South Africa. The boys discuss a range of topics including the impact of absent fathers, relationships with mothers, siblings and girls, school violence, academic performance, homophobia, gangsterism, unemployment and, in one case, prison life. Dominant themes that emerge are deep ambivalence, self-doubt and hesitation in the boys' approaches to alternative masculinities that are non-violent, non-sexist and non-risk-taking. The difficulties of negotiating the multiple voices of masculinity are exposed as many of the boys appear simultaneously to comply with and oppose the prevalent norms. Providing a rich interpretation of how emotional processes affect black adolescent boys, Langa suggests interventions and services to support and assist them, especially in reducing the high-risk behaviours generally associated with hegemonic masculinity. Who Da Man attempts to account for the ways that Black Diasporic identifications intersect with the dominant misogyny and homophobia in contemporary men's sporting cultures. Abdel-Shehid suggests that thinking about Diaspora in the making of contemporary Black sporting cultures provides a more comprehensive framework than that which looks at sport solely within the framework of nations and nationalism. He further argues that Canadian hegemonic ideas and practices typically marginalise blackness and Black peoples. Thus, the author suggests, Black masculinities in sport are often connected to Diasporic locations. These connections can be either empowering or disempowering, requiring careful analysis to achieve full understanding of how things are being perceived, projected, and therefore implemented. "Who Da Man" offers a feminist and queer reading of Black masculinity, and suggests that thinking about Black sporting masculinities means paying attention to the ways that these larger discourses of racism, exclusion, and Diaspora shape Black masculinities. Moreover, the book asks to what extent homophobia and misogyny within men's sporting cultures influence contemporary understandings of Black masculinity.
