Book excerpt: Never a gentleman . . . until now. Lord Bramwell Johns, the second son of a duke, is an unrepentant scoundrel. Now that his two closest friends are disgustingly ensconced in domestic bliss, Bram is feeling strangely restless. And not even relieving London's least deserving artistocrats of their ill-gotten jewels is enough—until the night he overhears an argument. It seems that Lady Rosamund Davies is about to be forced into marriage with a rogue even worse than himself. Rose is well aware of Bram's scandalous reputation, so any reason for his sudden interest in her is suspect; more so since he's close friends with the man about to ruin her family! She has her own plan though, and Bram may be just what she requires—as long as she remembers that he is only looking out for himself. As long as she remembers that his kisses and caresses don't mean anything. As long as she can keep from wondering whether she can trust a scoundrel . . . with her heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the white race it is almost impossible to comprehend what it took to lift blacks from the state of brutal slavery to their rightful place in society. Indeed, we are still grappling with that problem today. Starting from scratch has new meaning when you look at the beginnings of Booker T. Washington and Emmanuel and Tinny McDuffie, the founders of the Laurinburg Normal and Industrial Institute in 1904. How far they came has to be measured against where they began. Emmanuel McDuffie, the son of "none," became the symbolic father of many. He did not flee to the relative safety of the North after the war but plunged deeper into the divided and often dangerous South. He was determined to build a place where he, his family, and his race could stand and thrive. This 119-year history of the oldest private black prep school in the United States comes alive through extensive interviews and records now uncovered for the first time. Accounts of Jazz musician Dizzy Gillespie and NBA Hall of Famers Sam Jones and Charlie Scott, among many distinguished graduates and faculty members, paint a vivid picture. Ranked sixth nationwide among high schools in producing the most NBA players, Laurinburg Institute also sent more than 60 players to Division I college basketball teams all across the county. At least 50,000 students built a new world based on the firm foundation of Laurinburg Institute and four generations of the McDuffie family.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alonzo S. (Jake) Gaither, former head football coach and athletic director of Florida A&M, was named to the Football Foundation Hall of Fame in 1975, the first coach of a predominantly black college to be so honored. It was deserved recognition of an incredible career. "I like my boys ag-ile, mo-bile, and hos-tile," Gaither was fond of saying, and apparently they were. In twenty-five years of coaching at Florida A&M, Gaither won 85 percent of his games and never had a losing season. When he retired in 1973, his record of 203-36-4 was better than that of any active coach in the country. Over the years his teams won six national black collegiate championships and every conference title except three - twenty-two out of twenty-five. He also produced at least one All-America player every years except one, and through the years sent over twenty-five of his players to the pros. Gaither was selected small college Coach of the Year three times - by the Associated Press in 1961, by the American Football Coaches Association in 1962, and by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics in 1969. In addition he was awarded two of the highest honors given for coaching, the Amos Alonzo Stagg Award and the Walter Camp Award. Here, in an absorbing biography of the man who became a football legend, is the story of how he did it. --From the book jacket.

As Ariana Forsythe plans her wedding to Philip Mornay, she must adjust to the realization that she is soon to become the wife of an extremely wealthy man. She wonders if it's wrong to rejoice that her future husband is rich. But she promises herself to use her new position to do what she can to aid the numerous street waifs she sees all too often in London. During a tour of her future home—the house in Grosvenor Square—Ariana makes plans to redecorate according to her tastes. But when Philip arrives home later, he is informed that an expensive silver candlestick and a miniature portrait of George III have gone missing. Moreover, each time Ariana visits the house, accompanied by a friend or relation, another item disappears. Shortly thereafter Ariana is abducted as she leaves a performance at Covent Garden Theatre, leaving Philip to unravel the pieces of the mystery. Where has his future bride been taken, and by whom? For what reason? How does Ariana's faith play a role? Finally, after the safe return of his intended, how does Philip—a man of intense discrimination in his tastes—find the many alterations in his house? And what on earth is behind the sudden influx of bills from every charity in London, all thanking him profusely for his uncommon generosity? Will he have second thoughts about his future bride? Readers will find romance, intrigue, humor, and inspiration in this new book of spirited romance for the Jane Austen soul.

Book excerpt: The first question anyone should have for me is, Why would anyone be interested in an autobiography about my life as a coach? That would be a fair question, since I havent won any national championships nor have I been in demand for speaking engagements. If you compare my coaching record to others, my won-lost record doesnt stand out. With that said, let me explain what I have to offer, and then you decide. This book is not just about my life as a coach, but rather, the lessons I have learned through my coaching career. Being old-school is about coaching kids and young adults, not a particular sport, gender, age, or level of play. I have coached on every level of play that exists and coached both genders on those levels, along with almost every sport that a school offers.
