The global human population has grown from 6.1 billion to 7.1 billion in the last 15 years and is projected to reach 11.2 billion by the end of the century. The distribution of humans across the globe has also shifted, with more than 50 percent of the global population now living in urban areas, compared to 29 percent in 1950. Along with these trends, increasing energy demands, expanding industrial activities, and intensification of agricultural activities worldwide have in turn led to changes in emissions that have altered the composition of the atmosphere. These changes have led to major challenges for society, including deleterious impacts on climate, human and ecosystem health. Climate change is one of the greatest environmental challenges facing society today. Air pollution is a major threat to human health, as one out of eight deaths globally is caused by air pollution. And, future food production and global food security are vulnerable to both global change and air pollution. Atmospheric chemistry research is a key part of understanding and responding to these challenges. The Future of Atmospheric Chemistry Research: Remembering Yesterday, Understanding Today, Anticipating Tomorrow summarizes the rationale and need for supporting a comprehensive U.S. research program in atmospheric chemistry; comments on the broad trends in laboratory, field, satellite, and modeling studies of atmospheric chemistry; determines the priority areas of research for advancing the basic science of atmospheric chemistry; and identifies the highest priority needs for improvements in the research infrastructure to address those priority research topics. This report describes the scientific advances over the past decade in six core areas of atmospheric chemistry: emissions, chemical transformation, oxidants, atmospheric dynamics and circulation, aerosol particles and clouds, and biogeochemical cycles and deposition. This material was developed for the NSF's Atmospheric Chemistry Program; however, the findings will be of interest to other agencies and programs that support atmospheric chemistry research.

Book excerpt: Atmospheric aerosols have a significant impact on human health and climate, yet the full scope of these influences are only beginning to be discovered and characterized. To understand these impacts, detailed in-situ measurements of the physical, chemical, and optical properties of aerosols are necessary. Aerosol time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ATOFMS) provides the ability to measure chemical, physical, and optical properties of single particles in real-time. This dissertation uses ATOFMS to explore both the properties and evolution of particles as they are transported over local to global distances. The results of numerous field studies are utilized to explore the changes to these particles as they travel through the atmosphere from their source to eventual deposition. Local to regional scale transport of particles was observed from a number of perspectives in this dissertation. Particles regionally transported from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to San Diego were identified chemically as ship and truck emissions and shown to overwhelm local sources during peak transport conditions. Ship emissions were studied in detail at the Port of Los Angeles by characterizing individual ship plumes at a site adjacent to the main channel. Mobile laboratory measurements demonstrated the variation in particle concentrations and composition on a local-to-regional level. On the intercontinental-to-global scale, Asian dust was observed in precipitation samples collected in the Sierra Nevada Mountains during orographic precipitation. The incorporation of the long range-transported dust might enhance precipitation, which may alter California's precipitation patterns and water supply. The outflow of particles from Asia to North America were measured on a remote island off Korea, and the sources and aging of particles in Chinese urban, Chinese dust, and Korean air masses were compared to marine air masses. Lastly, ATOFMS studies from sites across North America, Asia, Europe, and Africa were compared to determine similarities and differences in size-resolved chemical mixing state of particles across numerous types of sampling sites, with the objective being to provide information for global climate models to more accurately represent particles. Taken together these results provide an increased understanding of particle chemistry and transport on the scale of meters-to-continents.

Book excerpt: One of the major issues confronting aerosol climate simulations of the Arctic and Antarctic cryospheres is the lack of detailed data on the vertical and spatial distribution of aerosols with which to test these models. This is due, in part, to the inherent difficulty of conducting such measurements in extreme environments. However given the pronounced sensitivity of the polar regions to radiative balance perturbations, it is incumbent upon our community to better understand and quantify these perturbations, and their unique feedbacks, so that robust model predictions of this region can be realized. One class of under-measured radiative forcing agents in the polar region is the absorbing aerosol--black carbon and brown carbon. Black carbon (BC; also referred to as light-absorbing carbon [LAC], refractory black carbon [rBC], and soot) is second only to CO2 as a positive forcing agent. Roughly 60% of BC emissions can be attributed to anthropogenic sources (fossil fuel combustion and open-pit cooking), with the remaining fraction being due to biomass burning. Brown carbon (BrC), a major component of biomass burning, collectively refers to non-BC carbonaceous aerosols that typically possess minimal light absorption at visible wavelengths but exhibit pronounced light absorption in the near-ultraviolet (UV) spectrum. Both species can be sourced locally or be remotely transported to the Arctic region and are expected to perturb the radiative balance. The work conducted in this field campaign addresses one of the more glaring deficiencies currently limiting improved quantification of the impact of BC radiative forcing in the cryosphere: the paucity of data on the vertical and spatial distributions of BC. By expanding the Gulfstream aircraft (G-1) payload for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility-sponsored ACME-V campaign to include the Single-Particle Soot Photometer (SP2)) and leveraging the ACME-V campaign's deployment within the Arctic Circle during the summer of 2015 (Deadhorse, Alaska [70° 12' 20" N, 148° 30' 42" W]), the truly unique opportunity presented itself to acquire profile data on BC loading at little additional cost. Since the SP2 is a particle-resolved measurement, the resulting data set provides refractory black carbon (rBC) mass loadings, size and mass distributions, and rBC-containing particle mixing state, all of which are expected to readily find value in the modeling community. As part of the ACME-V (http://www.arm.gov/campaigns/aaf2014armacmev) campaign, CO, CO2, and CH4 were also measured, providing the unique opportunity for carbon closure. We will also work closely with modelers who require such data and expect this collaboration will lead directly to a better understanding of the climate impacts of BC in the Arctic. The primary measurement objective was to acquire airborne data on the vertical and spatial distributions of refractory black carbon (rBC) loading, size and mass distribution, and particle mixing state. The primary scientific objective was to provide a targeted data set of rBC particle distributions to better understand and constrain the impact of black carbon radiative forcing in the cryosphere. The SP2-based data set during this campaign is available in the DOE-ARM archive (http://www.arm.gov/campaigns/aaf2015abclp).

Book excerpt: Interpreting the temporal relationship between the scattering and incandescence signals recorded by the Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP2), Sedlacek et al. (2012) reported that 60% of the refractory black carbon containing particles in a plume containing biomass burning tracers exhibited non-core-shell structure. Because the relationship between the rBC (refractory black carbon) incandescence and the scattering signals had not been reported in the peer-reviewed literature, and to further evaluate the initial interpretation by Sedlacek et al., a series of experiments was undertaken to investigate black carbon-containing particles of known morphology using Regal black (RB), a proxy for collapsed soot, as the light-absorbing substance to characterize this signal relationship. Particles were formed by coagulation of RB with either a solid substance (sodium chloride or ammonium sulfate) or a liquid substance (dioctyl sebacate), and by condensation with dioctyl sebacate, the latter experiment forming particles in a core-shell configuration. Each particle type experienced fragmentation (observed as negative lagtimes), and each yielded similar lagtime responses in some instances, confounding attempts to differentiate particle morphology using current SP2 lagtime analysis. SP2 operating conditions, specifically laser power and sample flow rate, which in turn affect the particle heating and dissipation rates, play an important role in the behavior of particles in the SP2, including probability of fragmentation. This behavior also depended on the morphology of the particles and on the thermochemical properties of the non-RB substance. Although these influences cannot currently be unambiguously separated, the SP2 analysis may still provide useful information on particle mixing states and black carbon particle sources. This work was communicated in a 2015 publication (Sedlacek et al. 2015).

The research presented here combines existing surface, satellite and aircraft measurements and develops self-consistent models for aerosol mixing state, global and regional radiative forcing of absorbing aerosols and their climate effects. The first part of this dissertation presents the climatology and radiative impacts of dust plumes over the Pacific, the Indian and the Atlantic Oceans using multiple satellite datasets in conjunction with MACR (Monte Carlo Aerosol-Cloud-Radiation) model. A core-shell internally mixed aerosol model has been developed using the microphysical, chemical, and radiative observations as constraints. It is shown that internal mixing enhances the aerosol absorption and contributes to over 20% increase of radiative forcing. The aerosol mixing model is validated by comparing model simulated spectrally-resolved irradiance with observations. The results show that aerosol induced forcing is mainly confined in the visible band and the largest forcing occurs in the blue channel. distribution of the spectral radiative forcing is obtained. The aerosol forcing is used to drive a general circulation model (GCM) with prescribed sea surface temperature to investigate the impact of absorbing aerosols on regional climate. One of the main model findings is that heating of the atmosphere by absorbing aerosols can contribute to significant reductions in low level clouds, which in turn amplifies the warming. The simulated cloudiness reduction is particularly strong over the Arctic and China and the simulated warming over the Arctic exceeds 1.5°C. The findings of cloud reduction over China and the warming over the Arctic are consistent with observations. The above effects are relatively weak or negligible when absorbing aerosols are treated as externally mixed which is used as the assumption by most GCM studies thus far. This study reveals the fundamental importance of accounting for the observed chemical and physical properties of absorbing aerosols.

The carbonaceous aerosols significantly contribute to air pollution, which not only causes public health concern, but also impacts climate change. The aerosol particles have properties to absorb or scatter solar radiation and thermal radiation; therefore, they play an important role in climate change. In order to improve the understanding and control the aerosol particles, it is crucial to study aerosol size distribution and chemical compounds. Black carbon is the strongest radiative absorber suspends in the atmosphere, and can have great influence on climate change. This study investigates the size-selected black carbon optical properties under laboratory conditions with varied relative humidity referred to “dry”, “humid”, and “wet” respectively. The single scattering albedo that measures the relative amount of aerosol light extinction due to scattering, and the absorption enhancement due to lensing effect are measured in this study, and compared with the modeling results based on Mie theory, which is used to predict the absorption and scattering of light by a spherical particle. The results show that the single scattering albedo under the dry, humid, and wet conditions are similar, while the single scattering albedo for black carbon particles that have undergone heating to 160 oC is slightly greater than other three conditions. In general, with respect to particle size, single scattering albedo increases with smaller particle size and then levels off at larger size diameters. In addition, the absorption enhancement for black carbon particles is estimated in this study, and it ranges from 1 to 2.5. The values based on observations generally follow the predicted trend from Mie theory. Comparing the observed and modeled values suggests that 25%-50% of the total particle diameter is attributable to coating material. Dry black carbon particles do not have high absorption enhancement because they likely have no or thin coating materials. However, the absorption enhancement for humid particles and wet particles are higher than the dry particles, likely due to an enhanced lensing effect due to water uptake by the black carbon particles. Future study will focus on improving the understanding of black carbon optical properties and accuracy of experimental results. Further research is recommended to focus on ranges of BC particles with the diameters smaller than 100 nm and larger than 650 nm, which are not included in this study and constrain the particle charge units.
