Book Synopsis Weird Scenes Inside The Canyon by : David McGowan
Download or read book Weird Scenes Inside The Canyon written by David McGowan and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2014-03-19 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The very strange but nevertheless true story of the dark underbelly of a 1960s hippie utopia. Laurel Canyon in the 1960s and early 1970s was a magical place where a dizzying array of musical artists congregated to create much of the music that provided the soundtrack to those turbulent times. Members of bands like the Byrds, the Doors, Buffalo Springfield, the Monkees, the Beach Boys, the Turtles, the Eagles, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, Steppenwolf, CSN, Three Dog Night and Love, along with such singer/songwriters as Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, James Taylor and Carole King, lived together and jammed together in the bucolic community nestled in the Hollywood Hills. But there was a dark side to that scene as well. Many didn’t make it out alive, and many of those deaths remain shrouded in mystery to this day. Far more integrated into the scene than most would like to admit was a guy by the name of Charles Manson, along with his murderous entourage. Also floating about the periphery were various political operatives, up-and-coming politicians and intelligence personnel – the same sort of people who gave birth to many of the rock stars populating the canyon. And all the canyon’s colorful characters – rock stars, hippies, murderers and politicos – happily coexisted alongside a covert military installation.

Tracy “seems to have found her literary sweet spot” (New York Times Book Review) with her dazzling new series, and in Desolation Canyon, fans get a deeper look into the complex characters who call Los Angeles home. LAPD Detective Margaret Nolan is struggling to move forward after the death of her brother in Afghanistan and taking a life in the line of duty. Her stoic parents offer little support – they refuse to address anything difficult, and she’s afraid their relationship is eroding beyond the point of recovery. The days off are the hardest, because they give Margaret time to think. A moment of weakness leads to cocktails with a colleague—an attraction she knows could be dangerous —at the luxurious Hotel Bel-Air bar. A stroll through the grounds leads to a grim discovery beneath the surface of Swan Lake: the body of a successful attorney who made his fortune in international trade. It initially appears to be death by misadventure, but the case is anything but straightforward. As a series of shocking revelations emerge, Nolan finds herself confronting a sinister cabal that just might destroy her and everyone she loves.

One such dream leads him to the Atlas Mill tailings site, outside Moab, Utah. There, Silas discovers the corpse of anti-uranium-mining activist Jane Vaughn, who went missing from Flagstaff, Arizona, buried in radioactive waste. Trying to connect the murder with the disappearance of his wife, who was friends with Vaughn, Silas travels across the Southwest to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. He confronts a host of suspects who wanted Jane Vaughn dead and who believed Penelope, too, was interfering with progress on the plateau. All the while, Silas’s nightmares, threaded with snatches of prose from the writings of Edward Abbey, seem to be leading him to some final confrontation—but with what? This is the second book in the Red Rock Canyon Mysteries, all of which are set in the American Southwest—around Arches, Canyonlands, and Grand Canyon National Parks, and the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

Book Synopsis Sinks Canyon Mystery by : R. L. Newman
Download or read book Sinks Canyon Mystery written by R. L. Newman and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2008-09-24 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This simple little adventure tale was originally written as a juvenile novel in 1964 while I was a teacher in Lander, Wyoming. It didnt impress publishers, so I put it aside and later moved to Colorado and stored the manuscript in the attic and lost track of it. Decades passed, but I persistently thought of rewriting my book, not to sell, necessarily, but for my own gratification, and I pondered how it could be better. I found the manuscript in early 2007, read it one more time and immediately set to work. The result was a complete revision, a total re-write other than the title, the locale and the basic plot. Because I was no longer hampered by trying to satisfy an editor or agent, I developed a style which frequently matches the way I really think and talk. (Some people who know me are thinking, Yeah, right: disorganized, repetitive, foolish, irreverent, clich-ridden, etc., etc.) Anyway, I was satisfied with the result. If you can read through the whole thing without losing interest or throwing up, then I feel that I have achieved my goal of becoming a bona fide novelist.
