Book excerpt: Depending on who you ask, bitcoin is rat poison, an interesting technology, or a world-altering wonder-currency that will lead a revolution in finance and alter our contemporary notions of privacy, wealth, governance, and security. Some say it will liberate the masses from financial oppression and deprivation. Others claim it's a ponzi scheme destined to destroy all who participate in it. Wall Street does not seem to care. It's happy to make money from those who want to buy it and those who want to bet against it. Does this mark the beginning of a shift of cryptocurrency away from bootstrapping developers and diehard believers towards professional money-makers? Will traditional finance rekindle the speculative frenzy that blasted cryptocurrency into mainstream discourse? How will cryptocurrency change Wall Street? More importantly, how will Wall Street change cryptocurrency?

The world is currently transfixed by the rise of Bitcoin. It is the King of Crypto Coins. But what is driving its exponential increase in value? Is it a temporary price bubble that is about to burst? Just like the Dot Com boom bubble burst? Will the Bitcoin price come crashing down? Will the King of Crypto Coins fall? Are there other Altcoins (a term used to describe alternative coins to Bitcoin) which offer more real value and which may replace Bitcoin as the premier coin? Will the successful coin of the future be one that has the backing of major Fortune 500 organizations, financial institutions and government departments? This book attempts to answer these questions. The world is at the dawn of a new revolution: The Cryptocurrency revolution. Just like the industrial revolution, the information revolution and the mobile revolution, the crypto revolution will define how people and institutions will exchange money and do business with each other. The purpose of this book is to help you cut through the hype and to explain in clear and simple terms what cryptocurrency is and how you can benefit from it. There is an avalanche of misinformation out there on the internet, generated by hype and hysteria over the massive rise in value of crypto currencies. This book cuts through the hype and guides you step by step through all the concepts you need to know in order to make sound decisions about things such as: Should I invest in cryptocurrency. What is an Altcoin? Altcoins vs Bitcoin. What is blockchain? What is mining? Should I mine crypto coins or just buy crypto coins as an investment? If I mine, should I buy my own mining rig or should I use a cloud based miner? Do I need GPU cards or will just a CPU do? These are just a few of the questions that this book answers. After the basic concepts have been explained, we will focus on some of the popular Altcoins which are emerging as strong cryptocurrencies and that have pros and cons over other minor crypto currencies. At the end of the book you will have a sound understanding of what cryptocurrencies are all about and why they should matter to you. A handy glossary of crypto terms has been added as a quick reference towards the end of the book together with a section on protecting your identity from identity theft, a major consideration when signing up to crypto exchanges, brokers and websites. Contents: Introduction. What is Cryptocurrency? What is Blockchain? Is Blockchain hack proof? What is mining? What is an Initial Coin Offering? Altcoins vs Bitcoin. What is Litecoin and LTC? This book tells the fascinating journey of Bitcoin and why it could be the best investment opportunity of your life. If Bitcoin reaches its potential, its value could rise by ten or even 100 times its current price. Bitcoin, like Alibaba, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Netflix, Microsoft, and Tencent, relies on the network effect (how many others are using it). But the market for money is much greater than the combined market values of the Internet giants. This book will help you understand why Bitcoin is the world's solution for the problem of money, the role of money in our economy, the current state of debt, and the particular intricacies of Bitcoin.

Book excerpt: "For readers of Bitcoin Billionaires comes a true tale of Bitcoin boom to bust: the inside story of fortune and new beginnings in the cryptocurrency Wild West Fresh out of university, Ethan Lou moves to Western Canada to write for Reuters, landing in an oil boomtown with deep roots in the past. But before that, he had another life, in the cryptocurrency world, crossing paths with the likes of the late Gerald Cotten of QuadrigaCX and Anthony Di Iorio, co-founder of Ethereum. When his early Bitcoin investments pay off spectacularly, the newly risen Lou builds a blockchain start-up, riding into a some-trillion-dollar frontier of open-bar pool parties, wealth-flaunting money giveaways, psychedelics, scams, scandals, and turmoil. Lou meets the wildcatters and the fast-talkers, the ambitious and the adventurous, and the exiles seeking fresh starts--all chasing hope, fortune, and the smell of gold. Yet nothing lasts. Calamity comes in waves. Overhead, vultures circle, and in the tall grass, lawmen lurk. This new world is harsh and unpredictable. A true story, Once a Bitcoin Miner is investigative journalism at its best: painstakingly researched through court and government records, extensive interviews, and confidential files and sources. It is also an accessible literary account: a richly told first-person narrative that delves deep into this prominent yet shadowy domain."--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do stock and housing markets sometimes experience amazing booms followed by massive busts and why is this happening more and more frequently? In order to answer these questions, William Quinn and John D. Turner take us on a riveting ride through the history of financial bubbles, visiting, among other places, Paris and London in 1720, Latin America in the 1820s, Melbourne in the 1880s, New York in the 1920s, Tokyo in the 1980s, Silicon Valley in the 1990s and Shanghai in the 2000s. As they do so, they help us understand why bubbles happen, and why some have catastrophic economic, social and political consequences whilst others have actually benefited society. They reveal that bubbles start when investors and speculators react to new technology or political initiatives, showing that our ability to predict future bubbles will ultimately come down to being able to predict these sparks.

Book excerpt: From the award-winning author of Sandworm comes the propulsive story of a new breed of investigators who have cracked the Bitcoin blockchain, exposing once-anonymous realms of money, drugs, and violence. “I love the book… It reads like a thriller… These stories are amazing.” (Michael Lewis) Over the last decade, a single innovation has massively fueled digital black markets: cryptocurrency. Crime lords inhabiting lawless corners of the internet have operated more freely—whether in drug dealing, money laundering, or human trafficking—than their analog counterparts could have ever dreamed of. By transacting not in dollars or pounds but in currencies with anonymous ledgers, overseen by no government, beholden to no bankers, these black marketeers have sought to rob law enforcement of their chief method of cracking down on illicit finance: following the money. But what if the centerpiece of this dark economy held a secret, fatal flaw? What if their currency wasn’t so cryptic after all? An investigator using the right mixture of technical wizardry, financial forensics, and old-fashioned persistence could uncover an entire world of wrongdoing. Tracers in the Dark is a story of crime and pursuit unlike any other. With unprecedented access to the major players in federal law enforcement and private industry, veteran cybersecurity reporter Andy Greenberg tells an astonishing saga of criminal empires built and destroyed. He introduces an IRS agent with a defiant streak, a Bitcoin-tracing Danish entrepreneur, and a colorful ensemble of hardboiled agents and prosecutors as they delve deep into the crypto-underworld. The result is a thrilling, globe-spanning story of dirty cops, drug bazaars, trafficking rings, and the biggest takedown of an online narcotics market in the history of the Internet. Utterly of our time, Tracers in the Dark is a cat-and-mouse story and a tale of a technological one-upmanship. Filled with canny maneuvering and shocking twists, it answers a provocative question: How would some of the world’s most brazen criminals behave if they were sure they could never get caught?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why the dollar is—and will remain—the dominant global currency The U.S. dollar's dominance seems under threat. The near collapse of the U.S. financial system in 2008–2009, political paralysis that has blocked effective policymaking, and emerging competitors such as the Chinese renminbi have heightened speculation about the dollar’s looming displacement as the main reserve currency. Yet, as The Dollar Trap powerfully argues, the financial crisis, a dysfunctional international monetary system, and U.S. policies have paradoxically strengthened the dollar’s importance. Eswar Prasad examines how the dollar came to have a central role in the world economy and demonstrates that it will remain the cornerstone of global finance for the foreseeable future. Marshaling a range of arguments and data, and drawing on the latest research, Prasad shows why it will be difficult to dislodge the dollar-centric system. With vast amounts of foreign financial capital locked up in dollar assets, including U.S. government securities, other countries now have a strong incentive to prevent a dollar crash. Prasad takes the reader through key contemporary issues in international finance—including the growing economic influence of emerging markets, the currency wars, the complexities of the China-U.S. relationship, and the role of institutions like the International Monetary Fund—and offers new ideas for fixing the flawed monetary system. Readers are also given a rare look into some of the intrigue and backdoor scheming in the corridors of international finance. The Dollar Trap offers a panoramic analysis of the fragile state of global finance and makes a compelling case that, despite all its flaws, the dollar will remain the ultimate safe-haven currency.

Book excerpt: Digital currencies are a fairly new phenomenon brought about by the spectacular rise of the internet. While Bitcoin is the most famous, there are numerous other digital currencies—from Amazon Coin to Zetacoin. Beyond Bitcoin explores the economic forces underlying the design of their features and their potential. Halaburda and Sarvary argue that digital currencies are best understood by considering the economic incentives driving their creators and users. The authors present a framework that will allow systemic analysis of this dynamic environment and support further discussion of the design of digital currencies' features and the competition in the market.

Book excerpt: Insane Growth Rate of Bitcoin that was valued 0 on January 2009, its users were just cryptography fans that were basically hobby is stretched all-time more than 700 at any given time high in 2017, boosting interest in all cryptocurrencies. In just 8 years, it had an 8,000% rise. No single currency or even an investment has reached that absurd rate. Because Bitcoin has been soaring as no other currency has ever done before, it has gotten its fair share of fans, critics, and sceptics alike. A lot of the critics have been calling Bitcoin as a "bubble" such as Warren Buffet, Jamie Dimon, Ray Dalio, and a whole lot more, mostly from the financial industry. However, they can call it anything they like, but it doesn't erase the fact that Bitcoin and cryptocurrency are here to stay. You can't argue with results. That's why there are more and more influential people buying into the Bitcoin craze. Below are words of some of those who have embraced the disruption with open arms:Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft: "Bitcoin is exciting because it shows how cheap it can be. Bitcoin is better than any currency in that you don't have to be physically in the same place and, of course, for large transactions, currency can get pretty inconvenient." Eric Schmidt, Executive Chairman of Google: "Bitcoin is a remarkable cryptographic achievement. The ability to create something which is not duplicable in the digital world has enormous value. Lots of people will build businesses on top of that." Al Gore, former Vice President of the United States: "When Bitcoin currency is converted from currency into cash, that interface has to remain under some regulatory safeguards. I think the fact that within the Bitcoin universe an algorithm replaces the function of the government ... [that] is actually pretty cool." There's a whole lot more, but you get the picture. Everyone is dying to get their hands on the Bitcoin craze, and it has no signs of stopping anytime soon. Therefore, the book is compiled to give the readers a comprehensive idea about cryptocurrency particularly Bitcoin through the following chaptersChapter-1: What Are Cryptocurrency and Bitcoins?Chapter-2: Bitcoin TechnologyChapter-3: Facts and Figures of BitcoinChapter-4: Is Bitcoin a Legal Tender?Chapter-5: Bitcoin as an Investment: Risks and Opportunities Chapter-6: Pros and cons of BitcoinChapter-7: Economist and Expert views on BitcoinChapter-8: Future of BitcoinI am sure once the book is read, the interested people in this area will be able to know pros and cons and be able to take decision as to whether to deal with cryptocurrency.

Book excerpt: " Assessing the potential benefits and risks of a currency union Leaders of the fifteen-member Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have set a goal of achieving a monetary and currency union by late 2020. Although some progress has been made toward achieving this ambitious goal, major challenges remain if the region is to realize the necessary macroeconomic convergence and establish the required institutional framework in a relatively short period of time. The proposed union offers many potential benefits, especially for countries with historically high inflation rates and weak central banks. But, as implementation of the euro over the past two decades has shown, folding multiple currencies, representing disparate economies, into a common union comes with significant costs, along with operational challenges and transitional risks. All these potential negatives must be considered carefully by ECOWAS leaders seeking tomeet a self-imposed deadline. This book, by two leading experts on economics and Africa, makes a significant analytical contribution to the debates now under way about how ECOWAS could achieve and manage its currency union, andthe ramifications for the African continent.
