After many days, many of the children deserted and returned to their homes. However, about five thousand sailed away in ships provided by two unsavory characters. Two ships were wrecked off the island of San Pietro, but the others reached a Mohammedan port and slave market.

Each man hoped to create a new national climate in which blacks and whites could cooperate to build a new nation. Each played a part in eventual independence for Zimbabwe in 1980 and for South Africa in 1994.
