Book excerpt: The delivery of high quality and equitable care for both mothers and newborns is complex and requires efforts across many sectors. The United States spends more on childbirth than any other country in the world, yet outcomes are worse than other high-resource countries, and even worse for Black and Native American women. There are a variety of factors that influence childbirth, including social determinants such as income, educational levels, access to care, financing, transportation, structural racism and geographic variability in birth settings. It is important to reevaluate the United States' approach to maternal and newborn care through the lens of these factors across multiple disciplines. Birth Settings in America: Outcomes, Quality, Access, and Choice reviews and evaluates maternal and newborn care in the United States, the epidemiology of social and clinical risks in pregnancy and childbirth, birth settings research, and access to and choice of birth settings.

Book excerpt: This book is inspired by all women! I have experienced four pregnancies, all with natural childbirth. Each pregnancy was different and brought along physical, mental, and health challenges. I have to admit...I enjoyed every moment of it, from the beginning to the very end. We all experience similar changes throughout life, both in the natural and spiritual. As followers of Christ, we have God-given gifts placed on the inside of our "spiritual womb" and He wants to develop the gift until it's ready to be birthed. It's not always going to be easy. It's going to take some growth that includes: mood swings, restless nights, and physical and emotional changes along the way. If God allows you to go through it, He will also be by your side to get you through it! This is not a read for just expecting mothers. This is a book for expecting believers! Have you been trying, praying and asking God to do great things in your life but, you're experiencing negative results? Has the enemy been trying to talk you into aborting your dream, your vision, or your purpose? If the answer is YES, I believe this book is for you, just as it is for me. So, I challenge you to start this "pregnancy" process with me. Remember, you are pregnant with a purpose and your delivery is on the way!

As we study her life we are be able to see how God called her, equipped her and birthed through her the spiritual Savior the world needed. She gave birth to the Word of God. God desires to spiritually birth His Word, His plans and His purposes through others too.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection explores birthing in the Pacific against the background of debates about tradition and modernity. A wide-ranging introduction and conclusion, together with case studies from Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji, and Tonga, show how simple contrasts between traditional and modern practices, technocratic and organic models of childbirth, indigenous and foreign approaches, and notions of "before" and "after" can be potent but problematic. The difficulties entailed confront public health programs concerned with practical issues of infant and maternal survival in developing countries as well as scholarly analyses of birthing in cross-cultural contexts. The introduction analyzes central concepts and themes: questions of survival, safety, and well-being; the significance of postures, practices, and sites; the role of midwives, traditional birth attendants, and nurses; and the role of men in birthing and reproduction. Contributors--four anthropologists, a historian, and a community health worker--offer insights into the ways mothers, midwives, and nurses relate the traditional and the modern, and how ideas of tradition and modernity have shaped representations of Pacific childbirth. The conclusion provides researchers with a guide to relevant literature from several disciplines. As a whole the collection warns against either a celebration of emancipation through biomedicine or a recuperative romance about women's past powers in reproduction. Contributors: Ruta Fiti-Sinclair, Margaret Jolly, Vicki Lukere, Shelley Mallett, Helen Morton, Christine Salomon.

Book excerpt: Compassion Fire is about my seasons of journaling years with God. • Seasons of mountaintops and valleys • Lessons that could only be learned through faith and dependence in God It’s in those valley seasons that we experience God and His presence at a deeper level than when on the mountaintops. I wouldn’t trade any of those experiences that I had for anything. Through these seasons I truly learned to trust God. My faith was strengthened, and I emerged out of the fire not consumed by it, but refined though not as silver, but as gold. – Chavonda Thompson
