Book Synopsis The Early Letters of Bishop Richard Hurd, 1739-1762 by : Richard Hurd
Download or read book The Early Letters of Bishop Richard Hurd, 1739-1762 written by Richard Hurd and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1995 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A model edition of the early correspondence of one of George III's favourite bishops. ARCHIVES Richard Hurd is best known to ecclesiastical historians as one of George III's favourite bishops who was offered, and declined, the archbishopric of Canterbury. These letters, therefore, illuminate the early career of one of the most prominent clerics of the late eighteenth century. The letters begin in 1739, just after Hurd had graduated B.A. at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. They chart his gradual climb up the ladder of ecclesiastical preferment, through his time as Fellow at Emmanuel and end with him settled in the comfortable country rectory of Thurcaston in Leicestershire. Hurd had a wide circle of correspondents. He became a close friend of William Warburton, Bishop of Gloucester, perhaps the most prominent controverialist of the period. He was also a member of a literary circle which included the poets Thomas Gray and William Mason. Indeed, Hurd himself is well-known to students of English literatureas the author of Letters on Chivalry and Romanceand as a significant figure among the so-called `pre-romantics'. Hurd's letters reveal the full range of his interests, from theology and university politics, through literature, to painting and sculpture. This edition, therefore, not only tells us about Hurd's early life and career, but also provides a valuable insight into the social life of the Anglican clergy in the eighteenth century.

Book Synopsis Inventing the Industrial Revolution by : Christine MacLeod
Download or read book Inventing the Industrial Revolution written by Christine MacLeod and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-09 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the development of the English patent system and its relationship with technical change during the period between 1660 and 1800, when the patent system evolved from an instrument of royal patronage into one of commercial competition among the inventors and manufacturers of the Industrial Revolution. It analyses the legal and political framework within which patenting took place and gives an account of the motivations and fortunes of patentees, who obtained patents for a variety of purposes beyond the simple protection of an invention. It includes the first in-depth attempt to gauge the reliability of the patent statistics as a measure of inventive activity and technical change in the early part of the Industrial Revolution, and suggests that the distribution of patents is a better guide to the advance of capitalism than to the centres of inventive activity. It also queries the common assumption that the chief goal of inventors was to save labour, and examines contemporary criticism of the patent system in the light of the changing conceptualisation of invention among natural scientists and political economists.

Book Synopsis Penny in the Slot- Conceiving the Internet- the Birth of the Coin Machine 1735-1883 by : Nicholas Costa
Download or read book Penny in the Slot- Conceiving the Internet- the Birth of the Coin Machine 1735-1883 written by Nicholas Costa and published by D'Aleman Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-29 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the untold story of the earliest days of coin operated devices which ultimately resulted in today's internet. It rewrites the history of Victorian technology. Many of the devices now claimed as the earliest or the first in fact were not. The supposed low brow technology used by the masses, hitherto deemed by the mainstream as not worth recording as history actually led directly to today's world. It ultimately succeeded in the late 1800s because it attracted some very high brow and highly influential money men as backers following the commercial success of a female patentee in the 1870s. Ironically the technology spread to America in the way that it did in the early 1880s because a young randy man couldn't keep his trousers on and had to be got out of the way for the sake of maintaining the respectability of members of Queen Victoria's household! Nic Costa is the acknowledged expert in the field, author of the best selling Automatic Pleasures
