Book excerpt: We performed bird and butterfly surveys from 1996 to 2004, and Yellow Warbler nest surveys in 2002 and 2004. Bird and butterfly surveys took place in two regions of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The northern region, or "Gallatins", consisted of the northwest corner of Yellowstone National Park and the western edge of Gallatin National Forest. The southern region, or "Tetons", included Grand Teton National Park extending slightly into Bridger-Teton National Forest. The bird and butterfly surveys (25 sampling sites in each region) were used to relate species composition to montane meadow types, which we classified along a hydrological gradient using remotely-sensed satellite imagery. We also related shifts in species composition to temporal changes in the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), which we used as a surrogate measure of climate (e.g., temperature and precipitation). NDVI measures were derived from the same satellite imagery used to construct the habitat classification. We found that Gallatin butterflies in mesic (as opposed to dry or wet) meadows exhibited concurrent shifts in species composition correlated with NDVI between the years 1997 and 2000, and between the years 1998 and 2000. Yellow Warbler nest surveys were performed only in the Tetons and were restricted to willow habitats. We hypothesized that waterway density within each nest territory would indirectly lower nest success by attracting high densities of garter snakes, which would then opportunistically prey on warbler nests. We used a recently published method of nest success analysis known as logistic-exposure, which is a logistic regression technique slightly modified via its logit link function. We found a significant negative effect of waterway density on nest success in our Pacific Creek study site, with a parameter estimate of -0.048 and a 95% confidence interval of [-0.086, -0.012]. We concluded that butterflies in the Gallatins responded at the community level to changes in vegetation within certain habitat types, which in turn reflected general climate patterns over specific time periods. We also concluded that waterway density can be used as an indirect predictor of nest success in Yellow Warblers, provided other predators are taken into account.

Book excerpt: We compared the structure of riparian willow (Salix spp.) habitat and songbird diversity across two regions of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem: Gallatin National Forest and Yellowstone National Park in the north and Grand Teton National Park in the south. The average height of willows was greater (151 vs. 65.9 cm) in the Teton region, and the average density of willows was greater (45.2 vs. 26.1%) in the Gallatin. The average height of willows was the most important variable explaining songbird species richness and abundance across these two regions. Songbird richness and abundance was greater (6.1 vs. 3.1 species; 11.7 vs. 5.6 individuals) in the Teton region. Larger patch size in the Tetons could be a factor contributing to the higher level of diversity but was not statistically significant. Individual species responses to habitat structure varied based on the nesting height preference of the species. Book excerpt: After nearly a century of height suppression, willows (Salix spp.) in the northern range of Yellowstone National Park, USA, are increasing in height growth as a possible consequence of wolf (Canis lupus) restoration, climate change, or other factors. Regardless of the drivers, the recent release of this rare but important habitat type could have significant implications for associated songbirds that are exhibiting declines in the region. Our objective was to evaluate bird response to releasing willows by comparing willow structure and bird community composition across three willow growth conditions: height suppressed, recently and previously tall willows exhibited high and similar vertical structure, but released willows were significantly lower in horizontal structure. Suppressed willows were significantly shorter and lower in horizontal cover than released or previously tall willows. Bird richness increased along a gradient from lowest in suppressed to highest in previously tall willows, but abundance and diversity were similar between released and previously tall willows, despite lower horizontal cover in the released condition. Common Yellowthroat (Geothylypis trichas) and Lincoln's Sparrow (Melospiza lincolnii) were found in all three growth conditions; however, Yellow Warbler (Dendroica petechia), Warbling Vireo (Vireo gilvus), Willow Flycathcer (Empidonax traillii), and Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodii) were present in released and previously tall willows only. Wilson's Warbler (Wilsonia pusilla) was found in previously tall willows only, appearing to specialize on tall, dense willows. The results of our a priori habitat models indicated that foliage height diversity was the primary driver of bird richness, abundance, and diversity. These results indicate that vertical structure was a more important driver of bird community variable than horizontal structure and that riparian and willow-dependent bird species have responded positively to increased willow growth in the region.
