Book excerpt: Here we report the establishment of a family relation system between the species of African bipedal primates observed in deposits from 6.2 to 0.9 million years ago (mya).For this purpose, the author presents a single method of assigning diagnostic “weight” when conducting character assessment of fossilized remains and has also formulated several equations and ratios that make use of morphometric measurements and can be used to predict the crucial parameters of paleontological individuals, such as body weight, endocranial volume, and cerebral index, and identify their diet.Having simultaneously considered all the morphometric descriptions of the bone remains of bipedal primates and, by a single method of character evaluation, having established the degree of their affinity, the author reconstructed the phyletic lines, uniting almost all diagnostically significant samples and systematized paleoanthropological material of the 6.2–0.9 mya period.The evaluation of the phyletic-associated fossils, in compliance with the Biological Species Concept (E. Mayr), revealed the existence of only two species of bipedal primates in the African continent at the beginning of the period under consideration. Later, a new, third, species emerged, the formation of which correlated with the exponential increase in the cerebral index and the advent of the first stone tools.

It tests the hypothesis that developmental modifications of morphology in the shoulder gird le and forelimb of Macaca mulatta are associated with changes in the frequencies of locomotor and postural behavior, and it demonstrates systematic study of the morphological and behavioral development of primates can be used to assess the validity of predicting habitual locomotor pat terns from anatomical evidence.Eight osteometric features of the scapula, clavicle and humerus, which reflect myological ada ptations to locomotor function, are statistically combined through discriminant function analysis and indicate differential modification of shoulder gird le locomotor morphology occurs in the Cayo Santiago population with age and by sex. Hypothetical shifts in positional behavior, derived from analysis of the skeletal data, are checked against actual behavioral frequencies observed in a free-ranging troop of macaques over a period of 13 months. The effects of seasonal changes in rainfall and flora, the annual reproductive cycle and an animal's sex, dominance rank, and genealogical affiliation are also considered as additional factors that can pattern frequencies of positional behavior.

University of Chicago professor Russell Tuttle was privileged to study one of the most dramatic and provocative fossil discoveries of the twentieth century: 3.66-million-year-old (MA) bipedal footprint trails at Laetoli, Northern Tanzania. This adventure concurrently led to invitations to join a team of barristers and solicitors in defense of two men accused of involvement in a murder in Winnipeg, Canada. The Queen's Counsel for the prosecution had engaged a certified forensic anthropologist, Louise M. Robbins (1928-1987), who had worked on a different section of the Laetoli footprints trails before him. Her claim to have developed a new science of human footprint analysis for forensic use and wild speculations about the makers of some Laetoli prints prompted him to question her scientific ability and method of footprint analysis (Tuttle 1986) and the judgment of fellow forensic anthropologists who supported her testimonials. We hope this book might lead to a better understanding of how science can serve our courts by using novel and well-established results of scientific research less adversarially with a view to achieve justice for all parties affected by crimes. Particularly, claims of new forensic methods should be tested thoroughly by peer review outside the courtroom before employment to decide matters of life and death. Dr. Robbins's decade of quackery is a prime example of how justice might be better served by early, thorough scrutiny of a claimant's novel methods and general scientific expertise. In addition to relevant literature, my main source is correspondence among Drs. Robbins, Mary Leakey, and Michael Day; court records of barristers and myself from copies of correspondence in my files dating back to 1980 and Anthropology Archives at the Smithsonian Institution; and detailed reports prepared by Dr. Robbins and R. Tuttle concerning a criminal case in Winnipeg, Canada. Although I did not set out to write the book as a memoir, it quickly became thus as I recalled the experiences that shaped me as a paleoanthropologist. Previously, my research was on functional morphology, history of anthropology, and evolutionary biology in the USA and Europe.

Book excerpt: The inspiration for this volume of contributed papers stemmed from conversations between the editors in front of Chuck Hilton's poster on the determinants of hominid walking speed, presented at thel998 meetings of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists (AAPA). Earlier at those meetings, Jeff Meldrum (with Roshna Wunderlich) had presented an alternate interpretation of the Laetoli footprints based on evidence of midfoot flexibility. As the discussion ensued we found convergence on a number of ideas about the nature of the evolution of modem human walking. From the continuation of that dialogue grew the proposal for a symposium which we called From Biped to Strider: the Emergence of Modem Human Walking. The symposium was held as a session of the 69th annual meeting of the AAPA, held in San Antonio, Texas in 2000. It seemed to us that the study of human bipedalism had become overshadowed by theoften polarized debates over whether australo pithecines were wholly terrestrial in habit, or retained a significant degree of arboreality.
