Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal Ions in Biological Systems is devoted to increasing our understanding of the relationship between the chemistry of metals and life processes. The volumes reflect the interdisciplinary nature of bioinorganic chemistry and coordinate the efforts of researchers in the fields of biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, coordination chemistry, environmental chemistry, biophysics, pharmacy, and medicine. Volumes deal with such topics as the formation, stability, structure, and reactivity of biological compounds of low and high molecular weight containing metal ions; the metabolism and transport of metal ions and their complexes; and new models of complicated natural structures and processes. Volume 21 describes the underlying theories of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), promoting a wider use of NMR in studies of paramagnetic species. In six concise chapters by leading international authorities, Applications of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance to Paramagnetic Species outlines the most recent developments regarding the use of nuclear relaxation as a source for structural information ... examines studies of magnetically coupled metalloproteins and metal-porphyrin induced dipolar shifts for conformational analysis ... and evaluates the potential of paramagnetic ions as agents for enhancing NMR image contrast. With over 500 references that facilitate further research, Applications of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance to Paramagnetic Species is an essential resource for scientists and students in such disciplines as biophysics; bioinorganic, inorganic, and coordination chemistry; biochemistry; molecular biology; and enzymology. Book Synopsis Autoxidation in Food and Biological Systems by : M.G. Simic
Download or read book Autoxidation in Food and Biological Systems written by M.G. Simic and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The material presented in this book deals with basic mechanisms of free radical reactions in autoxidation processes and anitoxidant suppression of autoxidation of foods, biochemical models and biologi cal systems. Autoxidation in foods and corresponding biological effects are usually approached separately although recent mechanistic developments in the biochemistry and free radical chemistry of per oxides and their precursors tend to bring these two fields closer. Apparent ability of antioxidants in diets to reduce the inci dence of cancer has resulted in scrutiny of autoxidized products and their precursors as possibly toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic agents. Mechanisms of any of these effects have been barely ad dressed. Yet we know now that free radicals, as esoteric as they were only a few decades ago, are being discovered in foods, biochem ical and biological systems and do play a role in the above-mentioned causalities. The purpose of the Workshop and the resulting book was to give a unifying approach towards study of beneficial and deleterious effects of autoxidation, based on rigorous scientific considerations. It is our hope that the material presented in this book will not only provide a review of the "state of the art" of autoxidation and anti oxidants, but also reflect the interaction which occurred during the Workshop between workers using model sytems, and food and biological systems.

Book Synopsis The Biophysics of Cell Membranes by : Richard M. Epand
Download or read book The Biophysics of Cell Membranes written by Richard M. Epand and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the modulation of biological membranes by specific biophysical properties. The readers are introduced to emerging biophysical approaches that mimick specific states (like membrane lipid asymmetry, membrane curvature, lipid flip-flop, lipid phase separation) that are relevant to the functioning of biological membranes. The first chapter describes innovative methods to mimic the prevailing asymmetry in biological membranes by forming asymmetrical membranes made of monolayers with different compositions. One of the chapters illustrates how physical parameters, like curvature and elasticity, can affect and modulate the interactions between lipids and proteins. This volume also describes the sensitivity of certain ion channels to mechanical forces and it presents an analysis of how cell shape is determined by both the cytoskeleton and the lipid domains in the membrane. The last chapter provides evidence that liposomes can be used as a minimal cellular model to reconstitute processes related to the origin of life. Each topic covered in this volume is presented by leading experts in the field who are able to present clear, authoritative and up-to-date reviews. The novelty of the methods proposed and their potential for a deeper molecular description of membrane functioning are particularly relevant experts in the areas of biochemistry, biophysics and cell biology, while also presenting clear and thorough introductions, making the material suitable for students in these fields as well.
Book Synopsis Membrane Hydration by : E. Anibal Disalvo
Download or read book Membrane Hydration written by E. Anibal Disalvo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the importance of water in determining the structure, stability and responsive behavior of biological membranes. Water confers to lipid membranes unique features in terms of surface and mechanical properties. The analysis of the hydration forces, plasticiser effects, controlled hydration, formation of microdomains of confined water suggests that water is an active constituent in a water-lipid system. The chapters describe water organization at the lipid membrane–water interphase, the water penetration, the long range water structure in the presence of lipid membranes by means of X-ray and neutron scattering, general polarization, fluorescent probes, ATR-FTIR and near infrared spectroscopies, piezo electric methods, computer simulation and surface thermodynamics. Permeation, percolation, osmotic stress, polarization, protrusion, sorption, hydrophobicity, density fluctuations are treated in detail in self-assembled bilayers. Studies in lipid monolayers show the correlation of surface pressure with water activity and its role in peptide and enzyme interactions. The book concludes with a discussion on anhydrobiosis and the effect of water replacement in microdomains and its consequence for cell function. New definitions of lipid/water interphases consider water not only as a structural-making solvent but as a mediator in signalling metabolic activity, modulating protein insertion and enzymatic activity, triggering oscillatory reactions and functioning of membrane bound receptors. Since these effects occur at the molecular level, membrane hydration appears fundamental to understand the behavior of nano systems and confined environments mimicking biological systems. These insights in structural, thermodynamical and mechanical water properties give a base for new paradigms in membrane structure and function for those interested in biophysics, physical chemistry, biology, bio and nano medicine, biochemistry, biotechnology and nano sciences searching for biotechnological inputs in human health, food industry, plant growing and energy conversion.

Download or read book Lipid Absorption: Biochemical and Clinical Aspects written by K. Rommel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 1975 more than 50 scientists - research workers and clinician- from 12 countries spent three days at Titisee in the Black Forest discussing problems relating to lipid absorption and ways of promoting closer liaison in the field. In this book all the papers presented at this symposium are published in full, together with the ensuing discussions. We should all like to thank Dr Falk for his generous sponsorship of this meeting which enabled us to work in such a charming atmosphere. We should also like to thank the authors and the other participants for the rapid preparation and correction of their manuscripts, and the publishers for their cooperation and assistance in preparing this book. We believe it repre sents a wide-ranging survey of existing knowledge of lipid absorption which will, we trust, provide a real stimulus for further research and new ideas in the study of this subject.
