Book excerpt: Ionic liquids have emerged as an innovative material for various applications due to their unique physicochemical properties. Collagen matrices have been used as a scaffold in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine due to their excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. The combination of these two materials has attracted much attention in recent years. The studies on ionic liquids effect on collagen matrices have been carried out to investigate the potential applications of these materials. The effects of ionic liquids on collagen matrices have been studied in terms of their chemical modification, physical properties, mechanical properties, rheological properties, swelling behavior, gelation, and crosslinking. The ionic strength of the solution has been shown to play a crucial role in the properties of the collagen matrices. Cytotoxicity studies have been performed to evaluate the biocompatibility of these materials. In vitro and in vivo studies have been carried out to investigate the cell culture, cell proliferation, cell adhesion, cell differentiation, and extracellular matrix formation of the collagen-ionic liquid composite materials. The potential applications of these materials include wound healing, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. Electrospinning has been used to produce electrospun fibers and nanofiber scaffolds of collagen-ionic liquid composites for biomedical applications. The surface modification of these materials has also been studied to improve their properties for various biomedical applications. The studies on ionic liquids effect on collagen matrices have the potential to provide new insights into the development of novel materials for various biomedical applications. The chemical synthesis, analytical methods, and characterization of these materials are crucial to understanding the molecular interactions and interfacial phenomena that occur in these systems. The interdisciplinary field of polymer science, polymer chemistry, biophysics, and biomechanics is essential in advancing the development of collagen-ionic liquid composites for various biomedical applications.

Book excerpt: These contribution books collect reviews and original articles from eminent experts working in the interdisciplinary arena of biomaterial development and use. From their direct and recent experience, the readers can achieve a wide vision on the new and ongoing potentialities of different synthetic and engineered biomaterials. Contributions were selected not based on a direct market or clinical interest, but based on results coming from very fundamental studies. This too will allow to gain a more general view of what and how the various biomaterials can do and work for, along with the methodologies necessary to design, develop and characterize them, without the restrictions necessarily imposed by industrial or profit concerns. The chapters have been arranged to give readers an organized view of this research area. In particular, this book contains 25 chapters related to recent researches on new and known materials, with a particular attention to their physical, mechanical and chemical characterization, along with biocompatibility and hystopathological studies. Readers will be guided inside the range of disciplines and design methodologies used to develope biomaterials possessing the physical and biological properties needed for specific medical and clinical applications.

In the first part, a general introduction to photochemistry and related phototechnologies is provided. In the second part, photochemistry-based medical applications for diagnostics (biochips and bioimaging) and therapeutics (biomaterials for artificial organs, medical adhesives, dental materials, drug-delivery systems, tissue engineering, and photodynamic therapy) are described, with examples of recent research. The year 2015 is the International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies. Light plays a vital role in our daily lives and is important in many interdisciplinary scientific fields in the twenty-first century. Light-based concepts have revolutionized medicine, including areas such as oncology, molecular biology, and surgery. Although photochemistry has contributed significantly to medicine directly and through photochemical fabrication of biomaterials, a book giving a comprehensive overview of recent progress has not been published until now. The aim of this book is to highlight the contributions of photochemistry in interdisciplinary fields of chemistry and medical engineering. This book will be useful for chemists who are interested in medical applications of photochemistry and engineers who are eager to learn the principles of photochemistry to enable its use in practical applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current interest in developing novel materials has motivated an increasing need for biological and medical studies in a variety of dinical applications. Indeed, it is dear that to achieve the requisite mechanical, chemical and biomedical properties, especially for new bioactive materials, it is necessary to develop novel synthesis routes. The tremendous success of materials science in developing new biomaterials and fostering technological innovation arises from its focus on interdisciplinary research and collaboration between materials and medical sciences. Materials scientists seek to relate one natural phenomenon to the basic structures of the materials and to recognize the causes and effects of the phenomena. In this way, they have developed explanations for the changing of the properties, the reactions of the materials to the environment, the interface behaviors between the artificial materials and human tissue, the time effects on the materials, and many other natural occurrences. By the same means, medical scientists have also studied the biological and medical effects of these materials, and generated the knowledge needed to produce useful medical devices. The concept of biomaterials is one of the most important ideas ever generated by the application of materials science to the medical field. In traditional materials research, interest focuses primarilyon the synthesis , structure, and mechanical properties of materials commonly used for structural purposes in industry, for instance in mechanical parts of machinery.

Book excerpt: One of the most important industrial proteins is collagen. On treatment with tannins or certain inorganic salts, it is converted into leather. This process is known as tanning. By prolonged heating with water, collagen is changed into glue, which has a large number of commercial applications, such as the making of paper, photographic plates, and adhesives. This Circular gives a general outline of the physical and chemical properties of collagen, and was prepared for the large numbers of chemists employed in industries in which this material or its transition product, glue, is processed.

Book excerpt: Biophysical chemistry is one of the most interesting interdisciplinary research fields. Some of its different subjects have been intensively studied for decades. Now the field attracts not only scientists from chemistry, physics, and biology backgrounds but also those from medicine, pharmacy, and other sciences. We aimed to start this version of the book Biophysical Chemistry from advanced principles, as we include some of the most advanced subject matter, such as advanced topics in catalysis applications (first section) and therapeutic applications (second section). This led us to limit our selection to only chapters with high standards, therefore there are only six chapters, divided into two sections. We have assumed that the interested readers are familiar with the fundamentals of some advanced topics in mathematics such as integration, differentiation, and calculus and have some knowledge of organic and physical chemistry, biology, and pharmacy. We hope that the book will be valuable to graduate and postdoctoral students with the requisite background, and by some advanced researchers active in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, medicine, pharmacy, and other sciences.
