This book was released on 2017 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing concerns due to rising CO2 emissions have made biomass an indispensable source of renewable fuels and chemicals. However, biomass inherently has high oxygen content, which translates to low energy density, thereby necessitating a deoxygenation step before being utilized as fuels. Recently, MoO3 and Mo2C have emerged as promising earth-abundant cheap catalysts that perform hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) at relatively low temperatures ( 673 K) and ambient H2 pressures wherein oxygen is selectively removed as water. However, there exists a significant knowledge gap in understanding the stability and the active phases responsible for HDO of these catalysts. Furthermore, their applicability for real biomass conversions has not been largely demonstrated. In this thesis, first, HDO of m-cresol, a biomass-derived model compound, is investigated over bulk and supported MoO 3 catalysts. Detailed reactivity and characterization studies reveal that Mo5+ species plays a critical role during HDO. Specifically, TiO2 and ZrO2 are identified as ideal supports as they feature superior HDO reactivity and stability over bulk MoO3 by stabilizing intermediate Mo oxidation states (i.e. Mo5+) while bulk MoO 3 over-reduces to inactive metallic Mo. Translating from model compound studies, supported MoO3 catalysts are demonstrated to be effective in converting biomass (pine) pyrolysis vapors to hydrocarbons (ca. 30 % yield). In comparison with MoO 3, Mo2C is significantly more stable and selective for HDO of 4-methylanisole to toluene under identical reaction conditions. Mo2C predominantly breaks the stronger phenolic C-0 bond while MoO 3 also breaks the weaker aliphatic C-0 bond, likely due to the presence of Bronsted acid sites. To gain insights into the surface active sites, operando near-ambient XPS is employed during HDO and this technique revealed that HDO seems to operate via distinct active sites over both these materials. Finally, Mo2C is shown to be effective in upgrading real lignin streams to a single product propylbenzene, a precursor for renewable polymer. Overall, this thesis demonstrates the applicability of MoO3 and Mo2C in real biomass conversions and provides insights on the working nature of these catalysts, which will enable the design of more effective HDO catalysts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fast pyrolysis and related catalytic pyrolysis are of increasing interest as pathways to advanced biofuels that closely mimic traditional petroleum products. Research has moved from empirical investigations to more fundamental studies of pyrolysis mechanisms. Theories on the chemical and physical pathways from plant polymers to pyrolysis products have proliferated as a result. This book brings together the latest developments in pyrolysis science and technology. It examines, reviews and challenges the unresolved and sometimes controversial questions about pyrolysis, helping advance the understanding of this important technology and stimulating discussion on the various competing theories of thermal deconstruction of plant polymers. Beginning with an introduction to the biomass-to-biofuels process via fast pyrolysis and catalytic pyrolysis, chapters address prominent questions such as whether free radicals or concerted reactions dominate deconstruction reactions. Finally, the book concludes with an economic analysis of fast pyrolysis versus catalytic pyrolysis. This book will be of interest to advanced students and researchers interested in the science behind renewable fuel technology, and particularly the thermochemical processing of biomass.

Book excerpt: Ex situ catalytic fast pyrolysis of biomass is a promising route for the production of fungible liquid biofuels. There is significant ongoing research on the design and development of catalysts for this process. However, there are a limited number of studies investigating process configurations and their effects on biorefinery economics. Herein we present a conceptual process design with techno-economic assessment; it includes the production of upgraded bio-oil via fixed bed ex situ catalytic fast pyrolysis followed by final hydroprocessing to hydrocarbon fuel blendstocks. This study builds upon previous work using fluidized bed systems, as detailed in a recent design report led by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL/TP-5100-62455); overall yields are assumed to be similar, and are based on enabling future feasibility. Assuming similar yields provides a basis for easy comparison and for studying the impacts of areas of focus in this study, namely, fixed bed reactor configurations and their catalyst development requirements, and the impacts of an inline hot gas filter. A comparison with the fluidized bed system shows that there is potential for higher capital costs and lower catalyst costs in the fixed bed system, leading to comparable overall costs. The key catalyst requirement is to enable the effective transformation of highly oxygenated biomass into hydrocarbons products with properties suitable for blending into current fuels. Potential catalyst materials are discussed, along with their suitability for deoxygenation, hydrogenation and C-C coupling chemistry. This chemistry is necessary during pyrolysis vapor upgrading for improved bio-oil quality, which enables efficient downstream hydroprocessing; C-C coupling helps increase the proportion of diesel/jet fuel range product. One potential benefit of fixed bed upgrading over fluidized bed upgrading is catalyst flexibility, providing greater control over chemistry and product composition. Since this study is based on future projections, the impacts of uncertainties in the underlying assumptions are quantified via sensitivity analysis. As a result, this analysis indicates that catalyst researchers should prioritize by: carbon efficiency> catalyst cost> catalyst lifetime, after initially testing for basic operational feasibility.

Book excerpt: Ex situ catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) is a promising route for producing fungible biofuels; however, this process requires bifunctional catalysts that favor C-O bond cleavage, activate hydrogen at near atmospheric pressure and high temperature (350-500 °C), and are stable under high-steam, low hydrogen-to-carbon environments. Recently, early transition-metal carbides have been reported to selectively cleave C-O bonds of alcohols, aldehydes, and oxygenated aromatics, yet there is limited understanding of the metal carbide surface chemistry under reaction conditions and the identity of the active sites for deoxygenation. In this study, we evaluated molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) for the deoxygenation of acetic acid, an abundant component of biomass pyrolysis vapors, under ex situ CFP conditions, and we probed the Mo2C surface chemistry, identity of the active sites, and deoxygenation pathways using in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rate of growth of stainless steel has outpaced that of other metals and alloys, and by 2010 may surpass aluminum as the second most widely used metal after carbon steel. The 2007 world production of stainless steel was approximately 30,000,000 tons and has nearly doubled in the last ten years. This growth is occurring at the same time that the production of stainless steel continues to become more consolidated. One result of this is a more widespread need to understand stainless steel with fewer resources to provide that information. The concurrent technical evolution in stainless steel and increasing volatility of raw material prices has made it more important for the engineers and designers who use stainless steel to make sound technical judgments about which stainless steels to use and how to use them.
