Book excerpt: The newest addition to the Green Chemistry and Chemical Engineering series from CRC Press, Biofuels and Bioenergy: Processes and Technologies provides a succinct but in-depth introduction to methods of development and use of biofuels and bioenergy. The book illustrates their great appeal as tools for solving the economic and environmental challenges associated with achieving energy sustainability and independence through the use of clean, renewable alternative energy. Taking a process engineering approach rooted in the fuel and petrochemical fields, this book masterfully integrates coverage of current conventional processes and emerging techniques. Topics covered include: Characterization and analysis of biofuels Process economics Chemistry of process conversion Process engineering and design and associated environmental technologies Energy balances and efficiencies Reactor designs and process configurations Energy materials and process equipment Integration with other conventional fossil fuel processes Byproduct utilization Governmental regulations and policies and global trends After an overview of the subject, the book discusses crop oils, biodiesel, and algae fuels. It examines ethanol from corn and from lignocelluloses and then explores fast pyrolysis and gasification of biomass. Discussing the future of biofuel production, it also describes the conversion of waste to biofuels, bioproducts, and bioenergy and concludes with a discussion of mixed feedstock. Written for readers with college-level backgrounds in chemistry, biology, physics, and engineering, this reference explores the science and technology involved in developing biofuels and bioenergy. It addresses the application of these and other disciplines, covering key issues of special interest to fuel process engineers, fuel scientists, and energy technologists, among others.

Book Synopsis Soil Organic Matter and Feeding the Future by : Rattan Lal
Download or read book Soil Organic Matter and Feeding the Future written by Rattan Lal and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-12-09 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil organic matter (SOM) is the primary determinant of soil functionality. Soil organic carbon (SOC) accounts for 50% of the SOM content, accompanied by nitrogen, phosphorus, and a range of macro and micro elements. As a dynamic component, SOM is a source of numerous ecosystem services critical to human well-being and nature conservancy. Important among these goods and services generated by SOM include moderation of climate as a source or sink of atmospheric CO2 and other greenhouse gases, storage and purification of water, a source of energy and habitat for biota (macro, meso, and micro-organisms), a medium for plant growth, cycling of elements (N, P, S, etc.), and generation of net primary productivity (NPP). The quality and quantity of NPP has direct impacts on the food and nutritional security of the growing and increasingly affluent human population. Soils of agroecosystems are depleted of their SOC reserves in comparison with those of natural ecosystems. The magnitude of depletion depends on land use and the type and severity of degradation. Soils prone to accelerated erosion can be strongly depleted of their SOC reserves, especially those in the surface layer. Therefore, conservation through restorative land use and adoption of recommended management practices to create a positive soil-ecosystem carbon budget can increase carbon stock and soil health. This volume of Advances in Soil Sciences aims to accomplish the following: Present impacts of land use and soil management on SOC dynamics Discuss effects of SOC levels on agronomic productivity and use efficiency of inputs Detail potential of soil management on the rate and cumulative amount of carbon sequestration in relation to land use and soil/crop management Deliberate the cause-effect relationship between SOC content and provisioning of some ecosystem services Relate soil organic carbon stock to soil properties and processes Establish the relationship between soil organic carbon stock with land and climate Identify controls of making soil organic carbon stock as a source or sink of CO2 Connect soil organic carbon and carbon sequestration for climate mitigation and adaptation
Book Synopsis Renewable Energy Technologies by : L. A. Kristoferson
Download or read book Renewable Energy Technologies written by L. A. Kristoferson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renewable Energy Technologies: Their Applications in Developing Countries presents an overview and assessment of technologies for energy-related projects in the rural sector of developing countries. This book discusses the important, but not dominant, role that new and renewable sources of energy (NARSE) will have in the Third World. Bioenergy fuel sources come from wood fuel, energy crops, agricultural residue and organic wastes, peat, biomass briquettes, biogas, and animal power. The text also describes the problems related to operating biomass engines and to the production of engine fuels such as alcohol fuels, vegetable oil, producer gas made from wood and charcoal. These problems concern land use and site location for growing these fuel crops, government policies or subsidies, as well as competition with prevailing petrol prices. Solar water heaters and photovoltaic cells can be used by households and in bigger institutions; ongoing technological developments mainly focus on cutting down costs and better manufacturing methods. The book also addresses other NARSE such as hydro, wind, and water power generation. This book is suitable for economists, environmentalists, ecologists, and policy makers involved in energy conservation and rural development.

Download or read book Alcohol Fuels Bibliography (1901-March 1980) written by Solar Energy Information Data Bank (U.S.) and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
