Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biology General and Medical The question astonished me, but the manner in which it was asked clearly intimated that it was a method of expressing his conviction that no one would do so. My friend is a. Distinguished educator, occupies an im portant chair in one of the most prominent American institutions, and should have known; but apparently did not. Time has shown him to have been mistaken. Stu dents were anxious for a writing that would connect the Botany and Zoology they had learned in college with the Anatomy and Physiology they were learning in the Med ical College, and those subjects with the world of living things in which they moved. I still am unable to answer the original question, who will read it? All that I can say, as the result of three editions completely exhausted, is that thousands are reading it, and for me that is enough to justify the long period spent in its preparation. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Biology for Students in General, Medical and Technical Courses IN this edition the general plan of the previous editions is retained but made more logical by bringing forward the chapters on plants so that the value to be derived from the evolutionary point of view can be employed in the study of the plant types discussed. The chapter on hydra is shifted for a similar reason. The section dealing with the biology of cells (chapters VIII - XI) has been entirely rearranged and extended in order that it may furnish a better foundation for the present-day conception of biology. The laboratory suggestions at the beginning of each chapter are omitted and attention is called to Laboratory Outlines by Hargitt and Hargitt which meets the needs of those wishing laboratory directions for the present edition. This book may be secured by writing directly to Professor C. W. Hargitt, Syracuse University, Syracuse, N. Y. The historical development of biology, typified in large part by the emphasis which certain great men placed first upon one aspect of living things and then upon another, affords a natural approach to our subject: Linnaeus (1707 - 17 78) emphasized the external form of organisms, while Haller (1708 - 1777) inquired into the general physiological activities of living things. These two men may be given credit for defining the two lines of study, morphology and physiology, which enter so largely into all modern courses in biology. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biology in Human Affairs The subject matter falls naturally into three parts. The first part is general in character. It contains reflections upon the philosophy of biology and upon the validity of its conclusions. Here the authors have also tried to show how the field Of biology is ever broadening through the inclusion of problems which were formerly thought to be beyond the reach of scientific procedure. The second part is concerned with the mind. It contains a skeletonized account of the general development of psychology, and essays on the application of psychological methods to education and to industry. The third part treats of the body. It is designed to show, in some measure, the progress in dealing with man as an animal. It portrays some of the advances in genetics, in medicine, in the work of the public health officer, in physiology, in biochemistry, and in general zoology put to the service. In addition, there is an extended discussion of the means by which man increases his food supply and thus makes it possible to feed some twenty million additional people with the advent of each new season. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Physiology: For Students and Practitioners of MedicineThis Handbook is the outcome of a desire to present to students a work that may Serve to connect pure physiology with the physiology specially useful to physicians; and I have endeavored to adapt it to the curricula of medical schools Where the subject is taught in the English language. With this end in view, I undertook the now difficult task of selecting from the vast store of knowledge what I trust may be taken as a fairly symmetrical and comprehensive presentation of human physi ology, not too voluminous for students or for ready reference by active practitioners. The subject has been treated from a medical standpoint; not unduly neglecting, it is hoped, pure physiology and biology.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Quantitative Method in Biology IN Physics, Chemistry and Mineralogy the properties of the Objects are measured and expressed by. Means of figures called constants. A constant is independent of any theory: it is the exact expression of a fact. The constants are in reality the material by means of which theories are built up, the explana tion of the Observed facts is found and the road opened for new discoveries. In Botany and Zoology, on the contrary, the properties (characters) of the living things are usually described by means of terms. We say that a given object is long or short, broad or narrow, Oblong or oval, etc. Much progress would be rendered possible if such terms as long, broad, short, etc., were replaced by figures. This would be simple enough if the properties of animals and plants were invariable. Unfortunately these properties are almost always variable, not only within the limits of one species, but also among the children of the same parents and even among the progeny of one parent.1 Variability has been hitherto the great obstacle which has rendered impossible the general use of quantitative data (figures) in Biological Sciences. The Object of the present book is to describe a method by which biological constants may be established. In the first two chapters I have expounded certain theoretical views about the notion Of species and variation. Those views afford us a guide for the discovery of the primordial (simple or elementary properties or characters) which are to be measured in order to find constants. The constants themselves are, however, entirely independent of any theory and of any. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: My original intention was to write a history of medical statistics, used in its prewar sense, expanding the writings on the subject by Major Greenwood, from which I formed many of my ideas in the early days immediately after the Second World War. In later years, I decided that the scope of his works was narrower than what I think is appropriate now, for he was writing in an era before the acceptance and use of the Fisherian methods and he was probably not aware of the mathematization of many parts of biological theory. Further, the boundary between the medical and biological sciences has largely disappeared. Many texts have now been written on branches of the theory and practice inspired by R. A. Fisher (see §4. 13). I discuss the history of the use of quantitative methods in the biological sciences, defined after the style of Peller (1967) as that branch of science that uses a quantitative approach to, or quantitative logical reasoning on, or biology. The mathematical tech any issue having to do with medicine niques are various and not classified here. Within the book I use "biological sciences" to include medicine but use the longer phrase in its title to avoid misunderstandings as to content. Moreover, most of the experimental work carried out in medical research laboratories is performed on animals other than man.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Evolutionary Biology The student, if he studies Biology at all for its own sake, which is seldom the case, usually confines himself almost entirely to one or other of these branches, which he finds treated more or less as an independent science, with an extensive literature of its own, and he runs a grave risk of losing sight of the general principles which underlie all and from which all derive their chief educational value. The medical student, it is true, usually takes a year's course in what is called Biology, but his curriculum is, perhaps unavoidably, dominated by the type-system and by what is thought likely to be of direct service to him in his future anatomical and physiological studies, so that in the brief time which the medical authorities allow him to devote to the scientific foundation of his professional work he has but little opportunity for a philosophical treatment of the subject. It seemed at that time as if, for the most part, the possible phasings and discoveries of pathologic and physiologic conditions must have been made and designated with names. Since then I have kept an eye - and through friends and helpers, many eyes - upon the busy minting still proceeding unabated. That in a decade over'30,000 new terms should have been devised is almost incredible. It is doubtful if any other science or Object of study has ever shown such a phenomenon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Zoology: For Students of Medicine and First Year Students of Science Whether the student is to specialise in Medicine or Agri culture or is to pursue a course in Pure Science, his knowledge of Zoology must be founded upon and can only be obtained by personal enquiry with reference to a series of types. The types are selected with a view to his finding out for himself the more important facts of comparative anatomy, physiology and embryology, gaining practice in methods of study, and forming an acquaintance with the literature of the subject. These are the essentials, and Should be conveyed by the teacher without undue bias as to the future studies of the student, and without particular reference to the problems which happen to be the fashion of the moment. This work is arranged as a guide to the student in acquiring this essential fundamental knowledge. The types chosen are those used in the majority of the Universities and Schools, or are nearly allied to them. More are described than teachers have time usually to accomplish in the First Year but in this respect it will meet the requirements of teachers who have the Opportunity of adopting the recommendation Of the General Medical Council that specialised instruction in Biology in its application to Medicine should be included in the medical curriculum. The types are arranged in zoological sequence, and tables are given to indicate their systematic position. Nevertheless, the description of each is complete enough to permit the study commencing with reference to any one of them. The types selected, moreover, are generally distributed, or allied forms may be readily procured, so that the book may be used by students in other countries.
