Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: It is also possible that contractile vacuoles originate by some form of phase separation not yet understood and possibly involving the contractile properties of proteins, and' it is possible that this process continues to operate in the walls of the vacuoles or feeder canals. This secretory process may be the function of that part of the vacuolar apparatus which blackens on impregnation with osmic acid, and which seems to possess some degree of permanence from vacuole to vacuole and in some cases from parent to daughter cell. Remarkably little is known about the mechanism of systole. General body turgor may contribute, but it is not essential. In ciliates the main force is local and probably comes from a tension in the wall of the vacuole itself, but it is not known whether or not this is an active contraction of an oriented protein layer. The critical process for the initiation of systole is probably the opening of the pore. It is possible that in ciliates there is a rhythmically operating independent timing mechani,sm by which the vacuolar cycle is controlled, but its existence has not been demonstrated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Molecular Biology of Plastids: Cell Culture and Somatic Cell Genetics of Plants, Volume 7A deals with various aspects of plastid nucleic acid and protein metabolism. This book is organized into 10 chapters. Chapter 1 provides the introduction to the molecular biology of plastids, followed by a discussion of the maps of restriction endonuclease sites on chloroplast chromosomes in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 focuses on chloroplast gene transmission, while Chapters 4 to 7 describe the apparatus for nucleic acid and protein metabolism and how some transcripts of chloroplast genes are processed. The ribosomal proteins, ribosomes, and translation in plastids are covered in Chapter 8. The last two chapters consider the organization, operation, and transport of polypeptides through the outer plastid membranes. This volume is a good reference for plant molecular biologist, genetic engineers, and researchers conducting work on the molecular biology of chloroplasts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a review of the principle approaches for visualizing DNA and RNA. Using scanning tunneling and atomic force microscopes, the three-dimensional image of the surface of nucleic acids can be seen at atomic-scale resolutions. Spreading methods provide useful details on structural features of isolated molecules, but the major constituent of living matter is water, and the cryomicroscope makes it possible to look at DNA in its aqueous environment. Genes can be detected simultaneously in situ in chromosomes using fluorescent probes, and also at the electron microscopic level. In cells, nucleic acids are localized and quantified by dyes; electron microscopy is used with cytochemical, immunocytological, nuclease, and in situ hybridization methods. The main potential applications for pathological studies are shown with particular aspects such as viral nucleic acids and in situ PCR.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arbuscular Mycorrhiza (AM) is the most common mycorrhizal type involved in agricultural systems, and the most widespread plant root symbiosis. The fungi involved (Glomales) are known to promote plant growth and health by acting as biofertilizers, bioprotectors and bioregulators. The main aim of this book is to provide readers with theoretical and applied knowledge essential for the use of AM fungi in improving plant health and fitness, production of high quality food and in conservation of natural resources. The different chapters target understanding the role of AM fungi in sustainable crop production, discussing ways to improve biological equilibria between microorganisms in the mycorrhizosphere, analysing genetic, physiological, cellular and molecular bases of AM functioning and establishing technologies for inoculum production, according to the regulatory guidelines for application.

Book excerpt: In 1988, we were contacted by the "Societe Botanique de France" and the French section of The International Association of Plant Tissue Culture (IAPTC) to organise a symposium on "Biotechnology and its impact in Agriculture". The committee members of these two French associations had the vision to realize that this was a time to depart from the traditional themes in plant science. Moreover, since one of the major areas of our interest for the past few years has been that of "Plant biotechnology", we welcomed the idea of organizing this meeting. Another reason for the acceptance of this challenge was the location of Amiens in Picardy, and the enthusiasm of the local governing authorities. Picardy region is one of the major agricultural zones in France, and indeed of Europe. This fact and several other aspects of Picardy Agriculture suggested that this conference would be an excellent opportunity to combine the basic aspects of plant tissue culture and genetic engineering with the applications for plant improvement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biology and Radiobiology of Anucleate Systems: II. Plant Cells encompasses the proceedings of International Symposium held in Mol, June 21-23, 1971. The symposium is organized by the Department of Radiobiology, Centre d'Etude de I'Energie Nucleaire (C.E.N./S.C.K.), Mol (Belgium) under the auspices of the Commission of the European Communities (EURATOM) and of the ""Relations Culturelles Internationales"" (Brussels). The aim of the three-day symposium is to bring together, for the first time, scientists working on anucleate systems obtained from bacteria and animal or plant cells. This volume is composed of 16 papers relating specifically to plant cells. Each paper is organized according to the date and session when they have been presented. This book will provide invaluable data for comparing the properties of anucleate Acetabularia with those of other anucleate cells, which would be very useful for better understanding of many problems concerning the nucleocytoplasmic relationships and cellular differentiation in normal and irradiated cells.
