Book excerpt: In the past two decades there has been an increasing public awareness of the hazards that exist from the contamination of the environment by toxic substances. 'Heavy metals' and the terrestrial environment are but one facet of the impact of toxic substances on the natural environment, and the use of biological materials for indicating the occurrence of, and continually monitoring the presence of, these materials is a specific topic which is of considerable interest to a diverse range of individuals, organisations and disciplines. It was our intention when we first en visaged this book that it should contain a description of a range of circumstances in which biological monitoring techniques have been employed in the terrestrial environment and that it should be seen as a practical text which dealt with the merits, shortcomings and suitability of biological monitoring materials. Monitoring is, however, a manifold process. It serves not only to provide information on past and present concentrations of toxic materials in various components of the environ ment, but also to provide information on the processes of environmental release, transport, accumulation and toxicity. Indeed, this may be one of the greatest virtues of biological monitoring over other forms of monitor ing. According to the skill of the staff employed in the monitoring procedure, the information that is accrued can have a vastly different value.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Paradigms in Environmental Biomonitoring Using Plants highlights and explores the importance of biomonitoring methodologies and the latest updates in the field. The book presents a holistic approach toward the different aspects of biomonitoring, focusing mainly upon the inclusion of newly emerging concepts of environmental genomics, metabarcoding, and cheminformatics and biomarkers, among other technologies; helping to explore and establish a new outlook for biomonitoring frameworks. This book compiles all aspects of biomonitoring including traditional and modern techniques, using a multidimensional approach without focusing on any specific pollutant. Most biomonitoring programs implemented until now have focused more on traditional methods. This book covers new approaches to biomonitoring that could improve on the currently limited capabilities of existing schemes. The book highlights the possible scope for enriching existing datasets and characterizing biodiversity in situ in a far more complete way than has been possible previously. New Paradigms in Environmental Biomonitoring Using Plants will be important for researchers, academics, postgraduates and undergraduate students in environmental, plant, crop and soil sciences, to provide up-to-date and emerging technologies in biomonitoring for environmental assessment, leading to a new vision of biomonitoring. It will also be helpful for risk assessment professionals and stakeholders involved in planning the future biomonitoring programs. Forms a cohesive source of information for technologies of use in environmental monitoring. Discusses newly emerging techniques in biomonitoring, including cutting-edge advances in ecology and genomics. Covers current biomonitoring concepts and programs, and also includes a holistic approach for biomonitoring.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The edited book serves as a reference on indicators of environmental pollution and how to sustainably ascertain the effects of different pollutants on life forms. It addresses an improved technology for monitoring contaminants, especially in the Global South and beyond, where the level of technology available for sustainable management of environmental quality is limited. Biomonitoring ecosystems' health by using organisms to gather quantitative data on environmental quality is one of the most straightforward and affordable ways to check environmental quality. Since organisms may function as environmental sensors, their use in the direct measurement of environmental quality in the process of biomonitoring studies implicates the health status of various ecosystems. In this regard, microorganisms, higher and lower plants, invertebrates, and vertebrate animals are beneficial since they can detect pollution levels and pollutants in the environment. This book is of interest and useful to toxicologists, water, soil, and air quality experts, practitioners, trainees, and trainers, biological sciences scientists, academicians, researchers, students (especially undergraduates and postgraduates), libraries, and other public knowledge repositories interested in novel and advanced practices in sustainable biomonitoring of environmental pollutants.

Book excerpt: The original method of testing for pollution in the environment by means of wild and crop plant species is described, with practical examples explained in detail within this book. This original method was developed by authors and proved correct for industrial complexes like nickel plant dumps, a smelting plant and an aluminium factory as well as city environments experiencing a heavy traffic impact. For a demonstration of general usefulness, a collaborative study with Kuwait University was accomplished to show the impact of the first Gulf War to the environment. The study of radioactive contamination in the vicinity of the Jaslovské Bohunice nuclear power plant was finished in cooperation with the University of Wien, Austria.Promising results from the retrospective biomonitoring of polluted environments by means of pollen grains for herbal samples are also presented, detailing the situation at a chosen locality up to one hundred years prior.A list of wild and crop plant species as bioindicators is presented for practical use. This original method is extended by special chapters describing other authors parallel plant test of phytotoxicity and mutagenicity and practical examples of remediation of heavily polluted sites. In conclusion, the authors are underlying the remarkable ability of nature to recover from all anthropogenic interventions thanks to the mechanisms of auto-regulation, adaptation and resistance. As this book is based on the thirty years of the authors experiences, it covers the period between the years of 1966-2018, with 380 references from this field of research.

Book excerpt: Biomonitoring—a method for measuring amounts of toxic chemicals in human tissues—is a valuable tool for studying potentially harmful environmental chemicals. Biomonitoring data have been used to confirm exposures to chemicals and validate public health policies. For example, population biomonitoring data showing high blood lead concentrations resulted in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) regulatory reduction of lead in gasoline; biomonitoring data confirmed a resultant drop in blood lead concentrations. Despite recent advances, the science needed to understand the implications of the biomonitoring data for human health is still in its nascent stages. Use of the data also raises communication and ethical challenges. In response to a congressional request, EPA asked the National Research Council to address those challenges in an independent study. Human Biomonitoring for Environmental Chemicals provides a framework for improving the use of biomonitoring data including developing and using biomarkers (measures of exposure), research to improve the interpretation of data, ways to communicate findings to the public, and a review of ethical issues.

Book excerpt: This essential book contains material presented at a September 1990 meeting organized by the Commission for Bioindicators, International Union for Biological Sciences.**A key role of the Commission for Bioindicators (IUBS) is to promote the use of bioindicators in environmental management. This means encouraging the transfer of ideas regarding potential bioindicators, and originating in laboratories, into the harsher realities of field environmental monitoring. Although the concept of biomonitoring is ancient, its application to current monitoring problems is relatively slow to develop.**In a bid to rectify this problem, this invaluable book brings together and discusses approaches developed around the world. It will provide both environmental administrators and research scientists with a valuable sense of proportion of the state of the art in their particular field. Bioindicators and Environmental Management is organized into four sections Bioindicators, industry, and administration Biomonitoring of the Chernobyl accident Monitoring long-term/large-scale environmental trends Basic research in biomonitoring
