Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a series of case studies, at different levels of inclusivity, of how organisms exhibit functional convergence as a key evolutionary mechanism resulting in responses to similar environmental constraints in mechanically similar ways. The contributors to this volume have selected and documented cases of convergent evolution of form and function that are perceived to be driven by environmental abiotic and/or biotic challenges that fall within their areas of expertise. Collectively these chapters explore this phenomenon across a broad phylogenetic spectrum. The sequence of chapters follows the organizational principle of increasing phylogenetic inclusivity, rather than the clustering of chapters by perceived similarity of the phenotypic features or biomechanical challenges being considered. This is done to maintain focus on the evolutionary phenomenon that is the primary subject matter of the book, thereby providing a basis for discussion among the readership about what is necessary and sufficient to justify the recognition of functional convergence. All chapters stress the need for integrative approaches for the elucidation of both pattern and process as they relate to convergence at various taxonomic levels.

Book excerpt: In this book, the authors first introduce two fish-like underwater robots, including a multiple fins-actuated robotic fish and a caudal fin-actuated robotic fish with a barycenter regulating mechanism. They study how a robotic fish uses its onboard pressure sensor arrays based-ALLS to estimate its trajectory in multiple locomotions, including rectilinear motion, turning motion, ascending motion, and spiral motion. In addition, they also explore the ALLS-based relative position and attitude perception between two robotic fish in a leader-follower formation. Four regression methods—multiple linear regression methods, support vector regressions, back propagation neural networks, and random forest methods—are used to evaluate the relative positions or attitudes using the ALLS data. The research on ALLS-based local sensing between two adjacent fish robots extends current research from one individual underwater robot to two robots in formation, and will attract increasing attention from scholars of robotics, underwater technology, biomechanics and systems, and control engineering.

Book excerpt: This book constitutes the proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Biomimetic and Biohybrid Systems, Living Machines 2022, in Genoa, Italy, held in July 19–22, 2022. The 44 full papers and 14 short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 67 submissions. They deal with research on novel life-like technologies inspired by the scientific investigation of biological systems, biomimetics, and research that seeks to interface biological and artificial systems to create biohybrid systems. The conference aims to highlight the most exciting research in both fields united by the theme of “Living Machines.”
