Book excerpt: Biological treatment of wastewater is a low-cost solution for remediation of wastewater. This book focuses on the bioremediation of wastewater, its management, monitoring, role of biofilms on wastewater treatment and energy recovery. It emphasizes on organic, inorganic and micropollutants entering into the environment after conventional wastewater treatment facilities of industrial, agricultural and domestic wastewaters. The occurrence of persistent pollutants poses deleterious effects on human and environmental health. Simple solution for recovery of energy as well as water during biological treatment of wastewater is a viable option. This book provides necessary knowledge and experimental studies on emerging bioremediation processes for reducing water, air and soil pollution.

Book excerpt: Increase in green, renewable and sustainable energy demand due to higher environmental impacts (e.g. Greenhouse gases emissions, climate change, etc.) on consumption of fossil fuel resource put down an extra pressure on government, researchers and industrialists. Among several available biofuel options, biohydrogen is considered as one of the best environmentally clean fuel and a strong candidate to fulfil the future demand of sustainable energy resource. Although, biohydrogen production technology and its use as a fuel is still in infancy stage. Selection of most sustainable production pathway, increase in production upto industrial scale and cost efficiency are some issue still persist with the biohydrogen research. “Biohydrogen Production: Sustainability of Current Technology and Future Perspective” is giving an insight for the sustainable production of biohydrogen at industrial scale. The process of biohydrogen production is complex and to opt the best suited production system for industrial scale is a frantic task. This book will provide an in depth information on all available technologies for biohydrogen production and feedstock options to choose upon. This book is also providing information on present status of the research in the field and possibility to change future fuel economy in to biohydrogen economy. Experts views provided in the chapters by renowned researchers from all over the globe in the field of biohydrogen research made this book a cornucopia of present research and future perspective of biohydrogen. This book is targeted at the researchers working on biohydrogen as well as the bioenergy scientist planning to move towards biohydrogen research. This book will provide a platform for motivation of researchers and industrialists for innovative ideas and thoughts to bring biohydrogen production at industrial scale.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrogen is an environment-friendly source of energy which has the potential to be the alternative fuel to replace the fossil fuels. It is a carbon free fuel which does not provide the greenhouse effect to the environment. Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is an abundant agro-industrial waste in Malaysia which composed of lignocellulosic material. This lignocellulosic biomass can be used as substrate for biogas generation. A biohydrogen producing strain was isolated from submerged palm oil sludge pond. The isolated bacteria was identified by various preliminary test such as Gram stain test, acetone test and gas producing test. The isolated strain was characterized as Gram-positive, rod-shaped and showed a positive result in both acetone test and gas producing test. Tryptone-yeast extract-acetate (TYA) medium was used during biohydrogen production process. The volume of hydrogen produced was measured by water displacement method. The fermentation process was done with the initial glucose concentration of 10 g/L and under anaerobic condition at 37oC. The study resulted in the optimum optical density (OD) of the cell at 1.046 and the residual glucose concentration at 0.2 g/L, where the final pH was at 4.5. The maximum biohydrogen production rate was reached at 46 mL/h when the fermentation period was at 21st hour and it dropped to 33.02 mL/h at 49th hour. Maximum biohydrogen yield was obtained at 292.49 mol-H2/mol-glucose with the highest biogas production and the highest estimation of biohydrogen production was 2,610 mL and 1,618.2 mL respectively. Therefore, this study showed that the locally isolated bacteria had the potential to undergo Acetone-Butanol-Ethanol (ABE) fermentation in order to produce a renewable biofuel.

It also offers extensive information on engineering approaches to energy production, such as process integration and process intensification in harnessing energy from microalgae. Issues related to the environment, food, chemicals and energy supply pose serious threats to nations’ success and stability. The challenge to provide for a rapidly growing global population has made it imperative to find new technological routes to increase the production of consumables while also bearing in mind the biosphere’s ability to regenerate resources. Microbial biomass is a bioresource that provides effective solutions to these challenges. Divided into eight parts, the book explores microalgal production systems, life cycle assessment and the bio-economy of biofuels from microalgae, process integration and process intensification applied to microalgal biofuels production. In addition, it discusses the main fuel products obtained from microalgae, summarizing a range of useful energy products derived from algae-based systems, and outlines future developments. Given the book’s breadth of coverage and extensive bibliography, it offers an essential resource for researchers and industry professionals working in renewable energy.

Book excerpt: Anaerobic digestion of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste as such or together with food waste, press water or patatoes sludge was investigated to equilibrate methane production within a day or over the weekend, when no OFMSW was available. A stable co-digestion process could be achieved with COD degradation between 60 and 80 %. The max. organic loading rates were 28 kg COD/L, d. For stable methane production the OLR during Co-digestion should not excede 22,5 kg/L,
