Published in the early 1900's, this biography has long since been out of print. Born close to two and a half centuries ago in Heidelberg, Germany, David Ziegler played an important role in the American Revolution, American frontier history and in early Cincinnati history. Part One contains comments by the editor with regard to the life and work of Ziegler and the various works which have been written about him in the German and the English languages since the nineteenth century. Part Two forms the main body of the work, and contains the biography of Katzenberger. In Part Three the concluding commentary of the editor can be found. This is followed by notes with additional historical commentary by the editor.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cincinnati, the Queen City, 1788-1912, Vol. 4 The death of Judge Longworth occurred January 18, 1890, when he was in the forty-sixth year of his age. Few men of his years attain so distinguished a position at the bar. He was fearless in attack because his position was based upon a comprehensive knowledge of the law, and a remarkable discernment enabled him to readily understand the weak points in an adversary's cause. However, he was not learned in the law alone. He possessed mechanical skill and was equally proficient in music. Few have equal knowledge of the writings of standard authors and his love of poetry was a paramount force in his life. His acquaintance with the classics was most wide and his translation of Electra, while preserving the pith of the original, makes Greek poetry readable even in the English language. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reprint of "Recollections of Cincinnati" The reproduction of Recollections of Cincinnati, by Gor ham A. Worth, is largely owing to the author's attractive and racy manner of recounting his impressions of the city and its inhabitants, received while a resident there in early days. This, taken in connection with the evidence obtained of the scarcity of existing copies of this small publication, seems to justify a reprint. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial History of Cincinnati and Representative Citizens, Vol. 1 The task of writing an account of so limited a portion of the earth as a single city does not in itself seem a very difficult one. Only those who have attempted it can appreciate the amount of labor such a task involves and the number of omissions and errors that must necessarily creep into such a work. These speak for themselves, and it is not necessary to call attention to them beyond expressing regret that they will be undoubtedly found in this volume as in others of its class. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cincinnati's Beginnings: Missing Chapters in the Early History of the City and the Miami Purchase; Chiefly From Hitherto Unpublished Documents The first purchases from the Government, about the time of the commencement of its operation under the constitution, of lands in what was then called the Northwest Territory, with the attendant efforts for the establishment and maintenance of settlements therein are fairly to be reckoned among the notable occurrences of the earliest period of the history of the United States as a nation; and anything essential to the completing of the account of the transactions might be looked upon even from a national standpoint, as deserving of preservation. The new claimant to a separate and equal station in the political firmament having emerged triumphantly from the arduous struggle in arms for independence, popular effort is then soon seen directed to plans for the redemption of a continent from a waste by the arts of peace. Prominent in the van of such manifestations were two schemes of purchase and settlement, of the description referred to, viewed by some with prophetic ken in the day of their inception as fraught with promise for the future, and to which, when regarded in the light of results thus far, it could not be alleged there was ever attributed an undue significance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Extracts From the History of Cincinnati and the Territory of Ohio: Showing the Trials and Hardships of the Pioneers in the Early Settlement of Cincinnati and the West While it is doubtless true that the story of the settlement of Cincinnati has been often told, yet it must be admitted that but comparatively few of our citizens have any definite knowledge of the events which first led to the exploration of the Ohio Valley, the causes which for so many years deferred its settlement, and the perils and hardships endured by the pioneers; while most of them are familiar with the more important historical epochs. The ancient landmarks are being swept away by the demands of an ever increasing population. The old pioneers are falling like ripe grain before the sickle. Events of purely local interest are rapidly passing from memory; and the fact that the settlement of Cincinnati marked an era in the history of our common country full of interest to all, has been lost sight of or disregarded. To remedy this, to present a truthful, impartial, and readable account of the historical events which gave the first impetus to settling the great Northwest; the explorations of the Ohio Company; the border wars, which so long prevented its actual occupancy; its final settlement; the campaigns of Harmar, St. Clair, and Wayne; the hardships, the trials, and struggles of the pioneers, and their mode of life; the names of the founders of the city; its rapid growth and brilliant future, the author has devoted much time during the past several years, and the result of his labors are soon to be published in two large volumes. From the collection of historical facts colated for that purpose, the narrative contained in the following pages has been extracted, condensed, and published in a cheap form, to place within the reach of all matters of peculiar and particular interest in this centennial year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from They Built a City: 150 Years of Industrial Cincinnati They Built A City is a record of 150 years of industrial life in Cincinnati; it tells about the things that the city's hands have made. A good many people have at some time or other wan dered off into Cincinnati's curious byplaces, stood upon the hills and seen the river cutting the city's pattern, joined the music crowds at the symphony and at the Zoo Opera, or paid random visits to its Barbary Coast and its beer gardens. They may won der why this book stresses, to the exclusion of everything else, the fact that industry and commerce have built Cincinnati. Book excerpt: Excerpt from When, and by Whom, Was Cincinnati Founded?: An Address to the Pioneer Association of Cincinnati, April 7th, 1882 But it will not do to give it up. In the grand round of Centennials which is passing over the country, Cincin nati also must have her day. It will not be many years before our turn will come; and it becomes our citizens to adopt timely measures for ascertaining and establishing our city's birthday. In such an investigation it is not assuming too much to believe that there is no portion of the community who may more properly lead the way, or to whom the others will more willingly defer the lead, than this Association. What I would, therefore, beg leave to propose is that this Association shall undertake this office; and that, after gathering all the light which their means and opportunities can bring to bear upon it, they shall formally announce their conclusion, as to the day we should celebrate, for the guidance or benefit of our fellow-citizens, when they come to determine the proper time.
