Book excerpt: A unique autobiography that provides an incomparable insight into the mind of a genius The Renaissance man of modern India, Rabindranath Tagore put his country on the literary map of the world when he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. My Life in My Words is, quite literally, Tagore on Tagore. Uma Das Gupta draws upon the vast repertoire of Tagore’s writings to create a vivid portrait of the life and times of one of India’s most influential cultural icons. The result is a rare glimpse into the world of Tagore: his family of pioneering entrepreneurs who shaped his worldview; the personal tragedies that influenced some of his most eloquent verse; his groundbreaking work in education and social reform; his constant endeavour to bring about a synthesis of the East and the West and his humanitarian approach to politics; and his rise to the status of an international poet. Meticulously researched and sensitively edited, this unique autobiography provides an incomparable insight into the mind of a genius.

Book excerpt: Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941)--poet, philosopher, painter, novelist, playwright, composer, traveller, political commentator and Asia’s first Nobel Laureate--was one of his era’s cultural icons. Proclaimed as the greatest poet India has ever produced, Tagore left an astonishing legacy undimmed nearly 70 years after his death. But he was also an enigmatic, complex and contradictory figure, torn between India’s spiritual values and the spirit of the West. In this definitive biography, Krishna Dutta and Andrew Robinson explore the man behind the myth, presenting the power of his person, the power of his name and the power of his work. The result is an enlightening and exquisitely rendered portrayal--not of the legend but, to quote Tagore, of "the figure that once moved."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tagore's supressed book now available in an English-Bengali edition For the first time in English, here is the sequence of poems Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941) worked on his entire life—the erotic and emotionally powerful dialogue about Lord Krishna and his young lover Radha. These "song offerings" are the first poems Tagore ever published, though he passed them off as those of an unknown Bengali religious poet. As the first and last poems Tagore wrote and revised, they represent the entrance and exit to one of the most prolific literary lives of our contemporary world. The translation rights to Tagore’s poetry were tightly guarded until 2001, when they entered the public domain, making publication of this book possible. These English versions are the result of a five-year collaboration between Bengali scholar Tony K. Stewart, who provided richly associative literal translations, and the celebrated poet Chase Twichell, who shaped the poems into English. This bilingual Bengali-English edition also includes the "biography" Tagore wrote of the unknown religious poet who supposedly authored these poems. Rabindranath Tagore was born in Bengal, the youngest son of a religious reformer and scholar. He wrote successfully in all literary genres and is the author of the national anthems for both India and Bangladesh. In his mature years he managed the family estates, which brought him into close touch with common humanity and increased his interest in social reforms. He participated in the Indian nationalist movement, and was a devoted friend of Mahatma Gandhi. Tagore received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913; he was knighted in 1915 by the British Government, but later resigned the honor as a protest against British policies in India.

They manage to capture the essence of Tagore and Rolland’s friendship in their struggle with the conflict between nationalism and human conscience. This volume also presents three important conversations the two engaged in at various points in time, as well as letters by Rathindranath Tagore and others, and lays out the journey of these two writers towards the imaging of a different world outside jingoistic politics. This correspondence presents the finest exchange of thought between the East and the West, and scripts the intellectual history of early twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely regarded as one of the most important figures in Indian (and more specifically Bengali) literary history, Rabindranath Tagore was the first Indian—indeed, the first person outside Europe—to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, largely in recognition of his “spiritual offering of songs,” Gitanjali. Tagore himself translated the poems from the original Bengali, taking many liberties in the process. His English translation is rightly recognized as a work distinct from the Bengali original, consisting of major revisions, many elisions, and many poems originally published in other collections. Tagore’s lyrical simplicity, vivid imagery, and themes of nature, spirituality, death, and transcendence combine to produce a truly unique, powerfully moving work of thoughtful beauty. For many who read it, Tagore’s words in Song XCVI ring true: “What I have seen is unsurpassable. I have tasted of the hidden honey of this lotus that expands on the ocean of light, and thus I am blessed.” This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Published after Tagore received the 1913 Nobel Prize in Literature, My Reminiscences contains personal reflections on the author’s youth, education, and introduction to the art of poetry. Originally published in Bengali, My Reminiscences was written by Tagore in his fiftieth year, as he prepared to embark on a journey around the world. “I know not who paints the pictures on memory's canvas; but whoever he may be, what he is painting are pictures; by which I mean that he is not there with his brush simply to make a faithful copy of all that is happening. He takes in and leaves out according to his taste. [...] In short he is painting pictures, and not writing history.” In this collection of memories, Tagore is at his philosophical, poetic best, reflecting earnestly and with ease on matters public and private. Looking back on a life at the center of Indian culture, Tagore moves fluidly and fluently from youth to young adulthood, recalling family, friends, servants, and strangers with clarity and curiosity. Afloat in his houseboat, lying on a rooftop at night, or exploring the outer limits of his mind, Tagore shares his insight with us all. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Rabindranath Tagore’s My Reminiscences is a classic of Indian literature reimagined for modern readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by the 1913 winner of the Nobel Price in Literature, Rabindranath Tagore, 'The Home and the World' follows the characters of Nikhil and Sandip, who have very different ideals around using violence to reach their goals. The novel illustrates the battle Tagore had with himself, between the ideas of Western culture and revolution against the Western culture. This is ultimately shown through Nikhil and Sandip. Covering themes such as truth, love and union, religion vs nationalism, and the role of women, 'The Home and the World' gives a real insight into societal problems in the Bengal region following the turn of the 19th century. Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941) was an Indian poet and philosopher. He was the first non-European to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. Rebellious to classical studies, he was sent to England to study law. Back in India, he devoted himself to poetry and musical dramas, and in 1883 began writing his collection 'Chants de l'aurore'. Dreaming of harmony between men, he wrote in 1904 a political essay in favour of the Independence of India. In 1910, 'L'Offrande lyrique' was published, translated by André Gide. At the end of his life, he supported Gandhi in his struggle.
