It selects 106 monks’ biographies from: (1) Haedong goseung jeon 海東高僧傳 (Biographies of Eminent Monks of Haedong) in 1215 during late Goryeo by Gakhun 覺訓, (2) Dongsa yeoljeon 東師列傳 (Biographies of Eastern Masters) in 1894 by Beomhae Gagan 梵海覺岸 (1820–1896), which collects the biographies of monks from early history of Korea to the nineteenth century, (3) Jogye goseung jeon 曹溪高僧傳 (Biographies of Eminent Monks of Jogye) by Geummyeong Bojeong 錦溟寶鼎 (1861–1930) in 1930. This book helps people read the life and thought of these monks who created the tradition of 1,700 years of history of Korean Buddhism, as well as the historical situation and spirit of their time. (1) Haedong goseung jeon is the biographies of eminent monks from the time of Buddhism’s introduction to the thirteenth century that the Hwaeom monk Gakhun recorded. Only two volumes of the text that correspond to the period of the Three Kingdoms survive now. This book selects the biographies of twenty-eight monks, including those who traveled to China and India to seek Buddhist scriptures. (2) Dongsa yeoljeon is the collection of the biographies of 198 eminent monks from the period of the Three Kingdoms to late Joseon that Beomhae Gagan of Daeheungsa Monastery, Haenam, Jeollanam-do, compiled. This book selects forty-eight of them, focusing on the successors of the Taego 太古 dharma lineage and the Pyeonyang branch of late Joseon. (3) Jogye goseung jeon records the biographies of ninety-seven monks after Bojo Jinul, thirty among of whom this book selects, focusing on the Buhyu lineage monks with Songgwangsa as their head monastery in late Joseon.

The author Gim Yeongsu was a scholar-monk, who was well known for his influential research on the systems of religious orders in Korean Buddhism by advancing such theories as Five Doctrinal [schools] and Nine Mountains [school of Seon], Five Doctrinal [schools] and Two [Meditative] schools, and Two Schools of Meditative practice and doctrinal Teaching. The contents of the second part on the Goryeo period include the royal worship of Buddhism, monastic examinations; the activities of eminent monks; the establishment of the Cheontae 天台 school and the Five Doctrinal [schools] and Two [Meditative] schools; the carving of the woodblocks of the Goryeo Buddhist canon; Buddhist cultural exchange with neighboring countries; the flourishing of the Seon school and the introduction of Ganhwa Seon; and so forth. The part on the Joseon period describes the official policy of persecuting Buddhism during the early Joseon period; the forced unification of Buddhist schools; the activities of monk militias during the Hideoyoshi invasion of Korea (1592–1598); synthesis of the three practices of Seon, Gyo (Buddhist doctrines), and chanting the Buddha’s name during the late Joseon; the problem of Dharma lineage of the Imje school; and Buddhist educational systems and practices. Book excerpt: Soon after the inception of Buddhism in the sixth or fifth century B.C.E., the Buddha ordered his small band of monks to wander forth for the welfare and weal of the many, a command that initiated one of the greatest missionary movements in world religious history. But this account of a monolithic missionary movement spreading outward from the Buddhist homeland of India across the Asian continent is just one part of the story. The case of East Asian Buddhism suggests another tale, one in which the dominant eastward current of diffusion creates important eddies, or countercurrents, of influence that redound back toward the center. These countercurrents have had significant, even profound, impact on neighboring traditions. In East Asia perhaps the most important countercurrent of influence came from Korea, the focus of this volume. Chapters examine the role played by the Paekche kingdom in introducing Buddhist material culture (especially monastic architecture) to Japan and the impact of Korean scholiasts on the creation of several distinctive features that eventually came to characterize Japanese Pure Land Buddhism. The lives and intellectual importance of the monks Sungnang (fl. ca. 490) and Wonch’uk (613–696) are reassessed, bringing to light their role in the development of early intellectual schools within Chinese Buddhism. Later chapters discuss the influential teachings of the semi-legendary master Musang (684–762), the patriarch of two of the earliest schools of Ch’an; the work of a dozen or so Korean monks active in the Chinese T’ient’ai tradition; and the Huiyin monastery.
