Book excerpt: Excerpt from Makers of the Scottish Church at the Reformation As the life of John Knox has been so Often written, I had some misgivings as to whether he should appear here for separate treatment, but it was impossible to exclude him - the greatest Of them all, and incalculably influencing all the others. I have not, however, in his case given a biography, but, as stated in the text, have selected certain incidents in his career, features in his character, and aspects of truth he emphasised, which are closely related to the work Of reform. I have also laid stress on his modern Spirit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Moderators of the Church of Scotland From 1690 to 1740 The character and scope of the pages which follow are sufficiently set forth in the Introduction. The material for each biography has been gathered from many sources. These are indicated in the text. With the single exception of Carstares, of whose biography by Principal Story I have made free use, none of the Moderators dealt with has formed till now the subject of special study. A few meagre notes about Meldrum, Blair, and William Hamilton are to be found in the pages of The Christian Instructor. Scott's Fastz' gives helpful references, but in great measure in every case the information secured has been hunted for in likely and unlikely quarters. Hundreds of books, including the various Club Publications, have been examined in the hope of gaining facts of moment, however small, in order to increase the vividness of the portraits dra Doubtless there are other details of interest still lying undiscovered in printed pamphlet and unprinted manuscript, but the result which I now offer as a contribution to the study of Scottish Church History, is as rich a harvest as I could reap from the fields which were open to me to traverse, and which had practically been untraversed before. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do animals have rights? If not, do we have duties towards them? If so, what duties? These and a myriad of other issues are discussed in the brilliantly argued Animal Rights and Wrongs. Issues discussed include- - Why are animal-rights groups so keen to protect the rights of rabbits and foxes but not of rats or mice or even humans? - How can we bridge the growing gap between rural producers and urban consumers? -Why is raising animals for fur more heinous than raising them for their meat? -Are we as human beings driving other species either to extinction or to a state of dependency? Animal Rights and Wrongs includes chapters on the livestock crisis, fishing, BSE and a layman's introduction to philosophical concepts. The book presents a radical response to the defenders of animal rights, and a challenge to those who think that because they are kind to their pets, they are therefore good news for animals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse on Scottish Church History: From the Reformation to the Present Time, With Prefatory Remarks on the S. Giles's Lectures, and Appendix of Notes and References And then, as we approach the period of the Reformation, we appreciate and admire the contrast, vividly drawn, between the noble and upward course of the pioneers of the recovery of Gospel Light and Truth - especially Patrick Hamilton, Alexander Alesius, and George Wishart, and the perverse downward course of their opponents, the champions of Darkness and Error - the ill-fated Cardinal Beaton, the double-minded Earl of Arran, and the weak and dissolute King James V. (Lect. 4). In these first four Lectures, it is scarcely necessary for me to say there is little or nothing which we Episcopalians should not have listened to with pleasure, or should have hesitated to welcome, had they been heard from any of our own pulpits; and though, when we reach the Reformation itself, it was not to be expected that this harmony of sentiment would continue to be maintained to the same extent, yet we thankfully observe that the points on which we become constrained to differ from the positions of the succeeding Lecturers, are still very few in comparison with those upon which we can cordially and unreservedly agree with them. With this observation, we enter upon the fifth Lecture, which it is necessary to notice in more detail. No one can be more ready than the present writer (as, indeed, I showed in a discourse preached and published more than twenty years ago on occasion of the Tercentenary in 1860) to pay to Knox the honour he deserved for his "supreme loyalty to the Word of God" (p. 151), his unswerving "vindication of the paramount authority of Holy Scripture" (p. 133). But when it is objected to our "landed gentry," that they "stand aloof from the Church of Knox" (p. 148), I must be permitted to reply that it is Presbyterians themselves who, at the present day, stand further aloof from the Church of Knox than Episcopalians do.
