Book excerpt: The Biographical Memoir of Daniel Boone: The First Settler of Kentucky, written in 1833, is an embellished account of Daniel Boone's life by Timothy Flint. Like other authors, Flint interviewed Boone for details, but he added his own version of events, making Boone fight bears, escape rampant Indians on a swinging vine, and forming him into an all-around backwoodsman hero. The retelling made the book one of the best-selling biographies of the 1800s, was the inspiration for literary figures like Davy Crockett, Don Juan, and Tarzan, and continues to influence the public picture of the nature man type even today.TIMOTHY FLINT (1780-1840) was a clergyman and scientist from Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard in 1800 and became a pastor for the Congregational Church in Lunenburg, Massachusetts in 1802. Because of the many chemistry experiments he conducted (which no one understood), Flint was accused of counterfeiting money, to which he responded with a slander lawsuit. As a result, he left his congregation to travel along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers as a missionary for almost eight years. In addition to clergy work, Flint edited and contributed to Knickerbocker and Western Review magazines and wrote several books, essays, and short stories, most of which focused on backwoods and missionary life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Adventures of Daniel Boone: The First Settler of Kentucky; Interspersed With Incidents in the Early Annals of the Country Our eastern brethren have entered heartily into the pious duty of bringing to remembrance the character and deeds of their forefathers. Shall we of the west allow the names of those great men, who won for us, from the forest, the savages, and wild beasts, our fair domain of fertile fields and beautiful rivers, to fade into oblivion? They who have hearts to admire nobility imparted by natures great seal - fearlessness, strength, energy, sagacity, generous foretfulness of self, the delineation of scenes of terror, and the relation of deeds of daring, will not fail to be interested in a sketch of the life of the pioneer and hunter of Kentucky, Daniel Boone. Contemplated in any light, we shall find him in his way and walk, a man as truly great as Penn, Marion, and Franklin, in theirs. True, he was not learned in the lore of books, or trained in the etiquette of cities. But he possessed a knowledge far more important in the sphere which Providence called him to fill. He felt, too, the conscious dignity of self-respect, and would have been seen as erect, firm, and unembarrassed amid the pomp and splendor of the proudest court in Christendom, as in the shade of his own wilderness. Where nature in her own ineffaceable characters has marked superiority, she looks down upon the tiny and elaborate acquirements of art, and in all positions and in all time entitles her favorites to the involuntary homage of their fellow-men. They are the selected pilots in storms, the leaders in battles, and the pioneers in the colonization of new countries.
