Book Synopsis Report of the workshop on fisheries other effective area-based conservation measures in Latin America and the Caribbean, 27–29 March 2023 by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Report of the workshop on fisheries other effective area-based conservation measures in Latin America and the Caribbean, 27–29 March 2023 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org. [Author] [Author]. This book was released on 2024-05-28 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In view of the importance of other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs) for biodiversity, and the need to improve individual countries’ capacity to report fisheries-related OECMs and understand how the fisheries sector contributes to current and future area-based biodiversity conservation objectives, FAO has been carrying out a series of activities to support countries to identify and implement OECMs. [Author] These activities include the organization of workshops and the development of practical guidance, as requested by FAO’s Committee on Fisheries (COFI). [Author] With the support of the Organización del Sector Pesquero y Acuícola del Istmo Centroamericano (Organization of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector of the Central American Isthmus [OSPECA]), FAO organized the workshop on other effective area-based conservation measures in fisheries-related areas in Latin America and the Caribbean. [Author] The workshop was held on 27–28 March 2023 in the city of San José, Costa Rica. [Author] This workshop supported Member Countries of the Commission for Small-scale and Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture of Latin America and the Caribbean (COPPESAALC), as well as regional and national fisheries-related organizations in the Latin American and Caribbean regions to: (i) apply CBD criteria for the identification of OECMs; (ii) understand the challenges, opportunities and needs that arise in the identification of fisheries‑related OECMs; and (iii) synthesize lessons learned and obtain recommendations. [Author] To achieve these objectives, topics discussed included: concepts and criteria for the identification, evaluation and reporting of OECMs; examples of OECMs in the world; conservation strategies in Latin America and the potential contribution of OECMs to these; the framework for fisheries governance and area-based management in Latin America; Argentina’s progress in recognizing OECMs; and the presentation of four case studies carried out in Chile, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Mexico. [Author] The workshop enabled extensive exchanges on the difficulties of interpreting the concepts and criteria for the identification, evaluation, and reporting of OECMs, as well as the key points, challenges, and difficulties in analysing and considering potential OECMs. [Author]

Book Synopsis Biological Diversity and Genetic Resources by : Biological Diversity & Genetic Resources Project
Download or read book Biological Diversity and Genetic Resources written by Biological Diversity & Genetic Resources Project and published by Commonwealth Secretariat. This book was released on 1992 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable use of genetic resources have been priority issues for a number of countries and international organisations over the past decade. We have begun to realise that the rapid rate of development at all costs has generated forces that are threatening to destroy the very substratum of life on Earth.Biological diversity is the building block of the myriad life forms on our planet and our defence against global climate changes. Wider acceptance of this truth has given an impetus to the need for further work at political and scientific levels. However, little information is available on how to study, use and conserve our biological and genetic resources. The Commonwealth Science Council's programme on biological diversity and genetic resources attempts to redress this imbalance. Launched in 1986, this programme recognises that good policies for conservation of our genetic resources require not only public investment by a systematic approach for institutionalising the key process of such conservation. The programme supports the development of appropriate courses, documents and training materials for capacity building at the local level. This book discusses the programme and aims to contribute significantly towards establishing relevant mechanisms and developing practical action plans for conserving and sustainably using our rapidly vanishing biological diversity.

It provides key insights on the main characteristics of selected access and benefit-sharing (ABS) policies and laws, their development, and implementation process. It contains a detailed comparative analysis of existing laws and policies. It presents four case studies of countries with regulations in place and contrasts them with four case studies of countries that are struggling to develop their regulations. It ends by discussing options of an international regime on ABS and a summary analysis of the main lessons and recommendations from the study.
