Book Synopsis Alkaline Phosphatase by : Robert B. McComb
Download or read book Alkaline Phosphatase written by Robert B. McComb and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 998 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There can be no doubt that alkaline phosphatase is one of the most extensively in vestigated of all enzymes. This has resulted from the ubiquity of its distribution, and from the ease and sensitivity with which its activity can be measured. Unfortunately, these wide-ranging but often superficial experimental studies have been followed up by intensive and systematic investigations in only a few limited areas of the biochemistry and chemical pathology of alkaline phosphatase. The result has been the accumulation of a scientific literature of intimidating proportions, and the inevitable rediscovery of already known facts about the enzyme. Scientists are taught early in their careers that, in the words of Sir John Herschel, "Hasty generalization is the bane of science. " Nevertheless, moments arrive in all spheres of scientific activity when generalization becomes essential, to codify and to select from the mass of data already accumulated, and to provide starting points for new developments and new lines of investigation. This is especially true in a field such as alkaline phosphatase research, in which very real dangers exist that the seeds of fundamental understanding will be lost amidst an unexamined harvest of empirical observations. The history of the study of alkaline phosphatase provides several instances when valuable generalizations have emerged. Occasionally, the conclusions drawn on the basis of available evidence were wrong; more frequently, they have stood the test of further experimentation, and always, they have provided new insights into the nature and proper ties of this enzyme.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a book that has become a milestone of scientific writing Dr. Blum uses "time's arrow," the second law of thermodynamics, as a key concept to show how the nature and evolution of the nonliving world place limits on the nature and evolution of life. He seeks to show that, from the beginning of the universe, physical and chemical laws have inexorably channeled the course of evolution so that possibilities were already limited when life first emerged. Book Synopsis Cellular Aspects of Membrane Permeability by : E. Schoffeniels
Download or read book Cellular Aspects of Membrane Permeability written by E. Schoffeniels and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cellular Aspects of Membrane Permeability describes the state of knowledge on permeability problems and interprets experimental results within the framework of working hypotheses. The book discusses membrane permeability with some biochemical perspective presented to explain the origin and adaptations of animal life. The text explains the process and the driving forces affecting the permeability characteristics of the experimental object. It then discusses the distribution of ions and molecules between two phases separated by a living membrane. Then the text analyzes the chemical nature of the molecular architecture that causes such permeability characteristics. The book addresses the electrical potential profiles of epithelial tissues, and then discusses the conducting membranes. It also explains the relationships between inorganic ions, sugar, amino acids, fatty acids, and bioelectric potentials. The book also explains the physical nature of such chemical nature and structure of living membranes. The text then describes the structure of the cellular surface and the structural organization of the cell. The selection can prove useful for biologists, microbiologists, zoologists, and students and professors of biology and its related disciplines.
