Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seekers of the Wild Realm meets My Diary from the Edge of the World in this poignant and “action-packed” (School Library Journal) story of a lonely girl who befriends a kitten that might be much more—the first in a new series from author of Mrs. Smith’s Spy School for Girls, Beth McMullen! Twelve-year-old Cassie King’s father always told her the universe was on her side. All she had to do was work hard and things would go her way. But then Cassie’s father died, her mom retreated into herself, and her best friend traded her in for the popular crowd at school. The only thing Cassie still has is the volunteer work she does at the local library, a place where she can leave her troubles behind. Unfortunately, classmate and school outcast Joe Robinson is always there doing the same thing. One day, while Cassie and Joe are leaving the library, a bizarre storm hits, trapping them in a narrow alley. In the storm’s aftermath, Cassie discovers a bedraggled little kitten abandoned in a smelly dumpster. Cassie feels an immediate connection to the kitten and takes him home. But the kitten—who Cassie names Albert—is a little odd, with impossible strength and agility for a creature his size. At one point, Cassie swears she sees plumes of smoke rising from his water bowl, and one afternoon, while Albert is alone in her room, a strange symbol appears on the closet door. With new friend Joe’s help, Cassie figures out the symbol is a map. But a map to what? The friends soon discover that Albert is much more than he appears and is in grave danger. He needs Cassie’s help in ways she never could have imagined. Keeping him safe is the first thing Cassie has believed in for a long time. But is she strong enough to face down a sinister enemy moving ever closer and protect everything she loves?

Book excerpt: Rooster on Main Street is a collection of short stories I have derived from daily experiences in and around Barra de Navidad; my new home. I've attempted to capture and portray the exuberanceof the people enjoying their families, their friends and their work. Here in Barra, there is no great mystery to the art of living happily, and the residents remind us of this throughout our day. It is a constant stream of colorful surprises that I am privileged to be a part of, and with little effort, the rewards have been greater than expected.

Book excerpt: Reader's Promotion: We Think We Think: Captions to the Cartoons We Live, Volume One is a potpourri of essays by author H. Alan Tansson. Runyonesque, in a light-hearted, pickle-barrel style, Tansson has forked up anecdotes from the brine: a mobster who kept fiddling with his gun, a go-go dancer who performed from the ductwork, and a sailor who kept forgetting his ship. Discover old-time corner-store philosophy reinvented for the Twenty-first Century-complete with theoretical pretzels to twist your view of everyday experience. You can explore life through bingo, life by doodling, life with sneezes, snores, and orgasms. Friendship, braggadocio, people-watching, art, cognition; you'll find a bit of everything here, except for religion, politics, and education-which is in the book next-door, Volume Two which is entitled Antidisestablishmentarianistically Speaking. Disbeliever's Promotion: Having learned you don't think at all, you'll be bursting with new ideas. Your blogs will rip the questions off tired old walls. Freed from cultural incrustations, others' arguments will drop to the floor as your voice ricochets across the web, and your witty twitters bring thousands their frabjous song! So if you're anxious for a mental renaissance, this book will do it, we think ... that is, We Think We Think.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two fields of contemporary Native American literature and culture exist in the tension between two literary traditions: the Native oral and literary tradition and the modern Western mainstream literary influence. In her North Dakota quartet Love Medicine (1984), The Beet Queen (1986), Tracks (1988), The Bingo Palace (1994), Native American mixedblood author, Louise Erdrich (b. 1954) exemplifies where and how these traditions meet and interact. A postmodern reading of the quartet shows that Native American authors and literary critics alike need not be afraid to tread into postmodernism, since an interpretation from this perspective opens up the possibility of freeing Native American literature from the limiting label of "ethnic or minority literature" and of establishing it as a vital part of American literature. This postmodern interpretation of Louise Erdrich's quartet offers a discussion of the theoretical issues involved in the context of ethnic writing and its relation to postmodernism, as well as an analysis of her intricate narrative strategies, in particular, her use of multiple perspectives and of intertextual techniques. The main part of the interpretation consists of a reading of postmodern concepts such as magical realism, carnivalesque humor, the relationship between reader and text, gender roles and sexual identities, history and textuality, the trickster figure, and games and chance as can be found in Louise Erdrich's North Dakota quartet.

One that is colorful with its own lifestyle, its cast of characters, its sub-culture, and, yes, to some extent, its own language. From its birthplace at the 1893 Columbian Exhibition in Chicago, to its present popularity at State, and County Fairs, the Carnival industry is uniquely American. Meet the Cast who make it fun. The Merriam family, Pete Leslie, who sold tickets on the snake show, and One Ball Eddie, who somehow kept that last milk bottle standing upright. Learn the difference between a Circus, and a Carnival. A Circus you only have to watch to enjoy. A Carnival you have to participate. Throw the dart, eat the corndog, win the prize, and give your best gal a squeeze as you go over the top of one of the descendants of Ferris’s magnificent wheel.
