Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The magnetic properties of lanthanide (Ln) pnictides and chalcogenides have been compioled in subvolume 27B. Subvolumes 27B1, 27B2 and 27B3 (already published) deal with Ln monopnictides, monochalcogenides and binary polypnictides and polychalcogenides, respectively. Subvolume 27B4 is devoted to the ternary Ln pnictides. The first part 4a deals with ternary 1:1:1 and 1:1:2 type compounds, while a second part 4b will cover the types 1:2:2, 1:4:12, 3:3:4 and compounds with even more complex formulae.–Ternary Ln pnictides and chalcogenides are intensively studied due to fundamental importance resulting from the f-d interaction and hybridisation, and also due to problems and properties related to heavy fermions, non-Fermi liquid state, spin fluctuations, etc., and also due to the hope of applying these compounds as magnetic, thermoelectric or superconducting materials.

Book excerpt: Thermodynamic data for inorganic materials are fundamental for the optimisation of existing process parameters and for investigating suitable parameters for carrying out potential new processes. With the aid of such data, time and costs can be saved by calculating the conditions necessary to produce a material of the required composition and specified purity, with a minimum usage of energy and input materials and with a minimum release of harmful substances to the environment. The SGTE evaluated data presented here are tabulated values of standard thermodynamic properties (enthalpy of formation and standard entropy at 298.15K, enthalpies and temperatures of transition, heat content) for each substance, together with plotted heat capacity, Gibbs energy and enthalpy of formation functions up to the maximum temperature for which the data for that substance have been evaluated. The data are presented in 3 subvolumes, A: Pure Substances, B: Binary Systems, C: Ternary and Multi-Component Systems.

This book was released on 1991-10-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 30 years after the publication of a data collection on dielectric properties in the 6th Edition of Landolt-Börnstein (Volume II/6) the complete volume IV/6 is presented here, providing an up-to-date view for this property. Important data from volume II/6 have been included in the present collection to spare the reader to consult the older tables. The present volume concentrates on static dielectric constants of pure liquids (mainly organics) and for the first time also of binary liquid mixtures at normal pressure. The vast amount of measured data forced the author to restrict the part for the binary mixtures to one single data set for each binary mixture at one temperature (in all cases where more than one data set at different temperatures was given in the publication, the set at or nearest to 293 K was chosen). This selection is in accordance to the fact that in most cases users are interested in deviations from a "linear mixing behaviour" only, which does not very much depend on temperature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface Science is understood as a relatively young scientific discipline, concerned with the physical and chemical properties of a phenomena on clean and covered solid surfaces, studied under a variety of conditions. The adsorption of atoms and molecules on solid surfaces is, for example, such a condition, connected with more or less drastic changes of all surface properties. An adsorption event is frequently observed in nature and found to be of technical importance in many industrial processes. For this reason, Surface Science is interdisciplinary by its very nature, and as such an important intermediary between fundamental and applied research.

Book excerpt: The interest in diffusion in solids is as old as physical metallurgy or materials science. It stems from application-oriented as well as from scientific reasons. First, a knowledge of diffusion is basic to an understanding of many microstructural changes that occur in solid matter at elevated temperatures. For processes like phase transformations, precipitation or dissolution of a second phase, recrystallization, oxidation, creep, annealing etc., solid state diffusion is fundamental and ubiquitous. The second reason for studying diffusion is to learn more about how atoms move in solid matter. Volume III/26 presents for the first time a comprehensive collection of diffusion data for solid metals and alloys. The critical compilation of data has resulted in tables and series of diagrams which show in 13 chapters data for the following properties: Self- and impurity-diffusion in metallic elements, self-diffusion in homogeneous binary alloys, chemical diffusion in binary and ternary alloys, diffusion in amorphous alloys, diffusion of interstitial foreign atoms like hydrogen, carbon, oxygen and nitrogen in metallic elements, mass and pressure dependence of diffusion, diffusion along dislocations, grain and interphase boundary diffusion, and diffusion on surfaces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parameters of neutron resonances are finding increasing interest, not only for scientific problems like the understanding of astrophysical processes but even more so for applications. For the construction and the safety of conventional nuclear reactors such data are essential and for new developments like the thorium-uranium cycle or for nuclear waste transmutation they are indispensible. Since the last publication of neutron resonance parameters at Landolt-Börnstein in 2004, the quality and precision of the data has been considerably improved, partly by the operation of new neutron spectrometers, e.g., the CERN time-of-flight facility recently put into operation and also by the use of new carefully designed neutron capture detectors. Volume I/24 contains neutron resonance parameters for the nuclear levels of 356 nuclei with Z ranging from 1 to 98 compiled by two eminent experts in the field. Again a considerable effort was made in comparing data from different sources in order to solve some previous discrepancies and establish 'best values', one of the main characteristics of Landoldt- Börnstein publications. In order to compare the data from different sources a comparison of the various experimental installations has been given. In view of the large amount of data the parameters for only the most important resonances are given in the printed version. However, the data for all resonances are available online at www.springerlink.com (DOI: 10.1007/978-3-540-87866-7). Neutron resonance parameters of many nuclei were previously published by Landolt-Börnstein in Volumes I/16B and I/16C.

Book excerpt: The three volumes VIII/1A, B, C document the state of the art of "Laser Physics and Applications". Scientific trends and related technological aspects are considered by compiling results and conclusions from phenomenology, observation and experience. Reliable data, physical fundamentals and detailed references are presented. In the recent decades the laser beam source matured to a universal tool common to scientific research as well as to industrial use. Today a technical goal is the generation of optical power towards shorter wavelengths, shorter pulses and higher power for application in science and industry. Tailoring the optical energy in wavelength, space and time is a requirement for the investigation of laser-induced processes, i.e. excitation, non-linear amplification, storage of optical energy, etc. According to the actual trends in laser research and development, Vol. VIII/1 is split into three parts: Subvolume VIII/1A covers laser fundamentals, Subvolume VIII/1B deals with laser systems and present subvoume VIII/1C gives an overview on laser applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains data on diffusion in liquid mixtures. Diffusion processes are widespread phenomena in nature, of which mass diffusion is the most important one, in particular in liquids. The corresponding diffusion coefficients strongly depend on concentration, temperature, pressure and density. Contrary to the measurement of viscosity or heat transfer, where a few well developed experimental methods exist, we find a wide spectrum of different methods for measuring mass diffusion coefficients ranging from NMR spectroscopy, scattering, holography, interferometry, chromatography, diffusion through diaphragm and in capillary systems, and electroanalytical methods. After an introduction about the selection and normalization of data, in its first part this volume presents the most important measurement methods, followed by a second part on diffusion coefficient data depending on the various parameters.

Book excerpt: Surface physics has experienced in the last two decades an explosive expansion caused by the development and/or substantial improvement of surface sensitive techniques and UHV apparatuses. It has grown into a mature field of research, with data of the highest accuracy and reproducibility. Surface physics is of great importance for technological applications like field effect devices, molecular beam epitaxy, chemisorption and catalysis, corrosion, surface hardening etc. The present volume III/24 is restricted to the so-called "clean" surfaces, i.e. to surfaces atomically clean and well characterized, leaving the more complex field of the contaminated surfaces and overlayers to a later occasion.
