Book excerpt: Kennesaw, called "Big Shanty" during the Civil War, started out in the 1830s as a railroad shanty town during the construction of the Western and Atlantic Railroad. In many ways, Kennesaw is a typical small town in Northern Georgia--it was built along the railroad tracks, cotton was the first engine of economic growth, stagnation occurred from the 1920s to the 1950s, and then it blossomed in the latter part of the 20th century as a suburb of Atlanta--but in other ways, Kennesaw is unique. The Andrews Raid, immortalized by Walt Disney as The Great Locomotive Chase, occurred here in 1862. In 1981, Kennesaw rocked the world when it passed its gun law requiring all households to own an operating firearm and ammunition. While still small, Kennesaw has had its time in the limelight.

Book excerpt: Cobb County was a wilderness of virgin forests and unspoiled vistas inhabited by the Creek and Cherokee Indians when the first settlers began arriving in the early 1800s. Farms, railroads, booming trade, new houses, schools and churches, and industrial development soon marked the area. After the state land lottery in 1832, wagonloads of people poured into the new county, encroaching on American Indian lands. The federal government's removal of the Native Americans, construction of the state-owned railroad, and the Civil War greatly affected Cobb County in the 1800s. Reconstruction and the Great Depression forced a severe economic downturn on the entire South, and the area lagged behind the rest of the nation until after World War II. Unprecedented growth in the last half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st has boosted Cobb's economic stance and its place as the fourth largest county in Georgia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virtual teams have been used to leverage scarce and distributed resources for many years. Expense reductions, health epidemics, air travel safety, and complex supply chains have only intensified this need. General best practices for leading and participating in virtual teams are well known but why are there still misconceptions about their effectiveness? What drives the notion that ?face to face is always better?? How can groups and individuals take the most advantage of virtual teams through the appropriate use of technology? Working Virtually: Challenges of Virtual Teams provides an in-depth, practical perspective on the growing dependence of virtual teams and how to best exploit them. Based on years of direct experience in managing and participating in virtual teams, as well as developing solutions to help virtual teams be more effective, the authors have provided unique insight that can be leveraged to help you get the most of your virtual teams.
