Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One would assume that a woman with a seventh-grade education, eight children to raise, and no money is considered a failure. Wrong! Not for this woman who was born in the Deep South in the 1920s. Instead, she used her situation as a ladder, setting goals and stepping over obstacles to successfully break free from the clutches of poverty. Staring poverty in the face and cleaning huge homes of affluent white people for miniscule wages to take care of eight children, Odessa B. Toyer demonstrated how one woman of tenacious character and totally dependent on God beat the odds to rear a family that would make her proud and give back to enhance her quality of life. She did it all without handouts and taught her children to do the same. Out of her poverty came many and varied life lessons that live on through her offspring. Decades later after all of her children were grown, it was shocking to see this strong woman forget the meal she had eaten fifteen minutes earlier, put keys in the refrigerator, or wander away from home to become a victim of the dreaded Alzheimer's disease. Once diagnosed, Odessa would fight the disease, and in the end, she strong-armed Alzheimer's by refusing to forget her children. When she died in 2008, we had no idea we would see Alzheimer's again. The monster was still lurking and would ultimately claim Odessa's oldest daughter. Where's Mama goes against the stereotypical finger-pointing of poverty-stricken families. On the contrary, it will show that proper raising, not poverty or ethnicity, determines the successful outcome of children. This story is multifaceted with many twists, and it will show how Odessa's adult children chose serving over life's pleasures to give back to their mother and a sibling through caregiving that collectively spanned more than a decade. I am Odessa's daughter. I lived through poverty with her and my siblings. That's why I'm telling her story. I believe this book will help others who have a will to climb out of poverty; and people tasked with caring for elderly loved ones who are victims of Alzheimer's.

Book excerpt: Danny is a Polack with a heart of gold. He grew up in New City, home of what was once the world’s largest slaughterhouse, the Chicago Stockyards. After Danny’s wife’s infidelity, he stepped out of what the US calls the “white man's” world. Standing over six feet tall, with a chiseled body, he can fix anything from leaky pipes to broken hearts. New City becomes the target of gentrification. Danny owes more than $100,000 in taxes and fines on his house worth no more than $10,000. He knows it’s just a matter of time before he’s living on the streets or worse, in one of the city’s shelters. He and his next door neighbors decide to move to Greencastle, Indiana. Mountain, a simple-minded man, becomes Danny’s boarder. At seven, Mountain could squash two walnuts in one hand. He shares Danny’s dream. They scrap metal, pick up bottles, and do odd jobs to gather the $13,000 needed to purchase their country paradise. Lippatu, the eight-year old daughter of Danny’s neighbor Napoleon, is afflicted with Sickle Cell Disease. Her sage-like strength and wisdom provides an odd balance to the chaos of their lives. Unfortunately, an ambitious, badgering, City Revenue Agent, Burman, discovers the hidden Greencastle funds. He ends up dead and with Mountain’s freedom at stake, Danny must decide if he will make the ultimate sacrifice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romance fans won’t be able to resist these colorful stories of four designers who use their creativity to refresh their love lives. Simple Gone South: The last time Brantley Kincaid had an argument with someone, a loved one ended up in Merritt Cemetery. He’s high-strung enough about moving back home to the memories without running into his childhood playmate, Lucy Mead, who’s all grown up and designing the homes of everyone who matters in Merritt. But bringing the right balance to Brantley’s mess might be more than she can measure. Enlisted by Love: Ex-army officer Matthew Blake is eager to start a new career, until he comes up against the most challenging obstacle he’s ever encountered: Greta Ferguson, the interior designer who challenges his every order. Will stubbornness spell curtains for what could be a dynamic relationship? Baby by Design: Tony Corcarelli’s dying nonna is shamelessly pressuring him to choose a wife and kids or the priesthood. Trish DeVign is a successful interior designer, single by choice and satisfied…except for that ticking biological clock. When she asks Tony to escort her to a wedding, a night of fun and flirtation turns serious. Maybe a calculated conception is the answer they’ve both been looking for. Heart of Design: The tabloids portray flirtatious Ian O’Connor as Hollywood’s latest playboy, but Sophie Hartland is just there to renovate his bedroom, not become another notch on his bedpost. Yet Ian finds her a refreshing change from the actress wannabes trying to hop aboard his new gravy train of success. Can Sophie ignore her traitorous libido—and, more importantly, can she protect her heart in this game of wills? Sensuality Level: Sensual

This book was released on 2001-06-30 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The result of years of research by its authors, this discography strives to identify and trace the recorded development of the musical style now known as western swing from its early years through World War II. The style developed from the Texas string band tradition, growing from a fiddle and guitar duo into full swing band groups, and along the way, it drew from and absorbed a variety of other musical styles, thus making it one of the most diverse genres in American music. Until now, studies have been limited to a few book-length biographies, but through exhaustive research and interviews, Ginell and Coffey have provided the most complete and comprehensive listing of pre-War western swing and hot string band recordings to date. Accessible through a variety of indexes, the information included here comprises four sections. The reader can easily find cross-referenced information on which musicians played with which bands on which songs. Easy-to-follow linear and chronological development of the music is provided as well.

Book excerpt: "You have to the count of three to get your ass on the ground with your face down and your palms up before we open fire. We will shoot to kill!" They fired into his back as he went around the back of the church. The officers cautiously ran after him and saw no body, nor a drop of blood! They searched the immediate area for some clue as to where the red-eyed driver could have gone. They assumed that he staggered off to die. Helpless in their efforts to find the strange-looking being, they turned to Big Mama, who was still screaming at the sky. The officers handcuffed her, and Big Mama was taken to the Troy Memorial Hospital, sedated, treated for shock, and evaluated by the emergency room psychiatrist. She was admitted to psychiatric unit thirty five for "bizarre behavior". Big Mama was discharged ninety days later, and missed her husband's funeral.
