In the morning, Stolpe saw over 1,000 dead enemy soldiers. Later in the Tinian campaign, Lt. Shearer ordered Stolpe and his buddy Charles Leslie to set out booby traps in front of their position. Then at night, when they began lighting up the area in front of Stolpe’s position, they exposed the attacking enemy. Stolpe jumped to his feet and threw a grenade on target and silenced the enemy’s machine gun. Stolpe was one of the very first Americans to land in Nagasaki after the bomb had wiped out the city. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A valuable anthropological artifact...readers come to realize Haiti's connections with Louisiana, especially the River Parishes." --L'Observateur "A long-lost charmer about a trip within the Haitian interior of another era. . . [contains] very evocative woodcuts by the author that add to the total otherness of what and where he is, going from the wild 20's jazz scene in New York to the all-but-unbelievable scenes he was witness to in the cacophonous darkness of a voodoo ceremony." --The Courier-Gazette (Rockland, ME) "The drums took on a different rhythm, rattling out a sharp staccato message, accompanied by the heavy pounding of the bass. Faster and faster flew the feet of the dancers as they whirled round the fire. Their smooth muscles writhed and cramped as under the blows of an invisible whip." From his steamer voyage from Jazz Age New York to Cap Haitien to his punishing trek through the island's interior jungle to his rapt, yet fearful, attendance at an authentic voodoo ceremony, Richard A. Loederer captures the sights, sounds, and sensations of this mysterious Caribbean republic. Originally published in German in 1932, Loederer's eyewitness account of his adventures in Haiti has long been out of print. The author's own art-deco-style woodcuts add to the exotic appeal of this volume, which chronicles the vanishing African traditions of the island's people.

Book excerpt: The book used by Thandie Newton to research her part in Line of Duty. A lone policewoman disarms a knife-wielding schizophrenic; two officers drag a woman from a railway line seconds before an express train roars past; an undercover cop clings onto the bonnet of a drug-dealer's car as it speeds through a busy town centre. These are just some of the ways Britain's police officers are daily called upon to demonstrate bravery in the line of duty when even the most routine call can turn into a life-or-death situation and split-second judgements can make all the difference. Sometimes officers make the ultimate sacrifice in fulfilling their duty. When PC Bill Parker was swept to his death by floodwaters in Cumbria in 2009, he had been working to save stranded motorists from the same fate. This thrilling collection of first-person accounts of true courage celebrates the sustained bravery and presence of mind routinely displayed by so many officers in England, Wales and Scotland. The stories also reveal an insider's view of the culture, training and techniques police officers use in carrying out their duties.

Download or read book Powder Burn written by Daniel Glick and published by Public Affairs. This book was released on 2009-02-23 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October, 1998 an arson caused $12 million in damage at Vail, the country's largest ski area. A shadowy radical environmental group called the Earth Liberation Front claimed credit for what the FBI called the costliest act of ecoterrorism in U.S. history. But as it turns out, credible suspects were everywhere, since Vail was owned by a New York investment firm that had alienated a wide swath of Colorado's high country residents."Who couldn't have done this?" wondered a local sheriff's investigator. More than a clever whodunit, Powder Burn scrapes away the glitz of America's premier ski destination to reveal a cautionary tale about runaway opulance and rapid change in the New West. As the Denver Post put it, "Vail is a microcosm of the disputes over growth raging across the Rockies, and Glick's take on the fire helps to fan the flames." Packed with odd characters and paranoia, with beautiful mountains and despicable actions, Powder Burn is about corporate greed, the environment, a small town and a mysterious unsolved crime. As Vail celebrates its fortieth anniversary with a full season of hoopla and self-promotion, this book makes compelling reading for skiers, true crime enthusiasts, or anyone interested in the environmental, social, and political issues raised by the evolution of the new West.
