Book excerpt: "This doctoral dissertation focuses on the formation, growth and discontinuance of business firms and business populations in Sweden during the 20th century. It addresses some key issues in the domain of economic and social sciences and in entrepreneurship and small business research: if, why and when firms grow, stagnate and contract, as well as how long firms survive and why they disband." "The dissertation assumes a micro-to-macro, longitudinal and population approach. It combines sources, methods and approaches from economic history, business history and demography, with those of entrepreneurship and small business research. The study combines internal, firm-specific explanations to firm growth and survival with external explanations, such as macroeconomic conditions. Additionally, it employs unique empirical data on business firms, with an observation period of over one hundred years. The perspectives and methodology applied in the dissertation can be viewed as complementary to earlier approaches in entrepreneurship and small business research."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book The Pine Tar Game written by Filip Bondy and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 24, 1983, during the finale of a heated four-game series between the dynastic New York Yankees and small-town Kansas City Royals, umpires nullified a go-ahead home run based on an obscure rule, when Yankees manager Billy Martin pointed out an illegal amount of pine tar, the sticky substance used for a better grip, on Royals third baseman George Brett's bat. Brett wildly charged out of the dugout and chaos ensued. The call temporarily cost the Royals the game, but the decision was eventually overturned, resulting in a resumption of the game several weeks later that created its own hysteria. The Pine Tar Game chronicles this watershed moment, marking a pivot in the sport, when benign cheating tactics, like spitballs, Superball bats, and a couple extra inches of tar on an ash bat, gave way to era of soaring salaries, labor struggles, and rampant use of performance-enhancing drugs. Filip Bondy paints a portrait of the Yankees and Royals of that era, featuring two diametrically opposed owners, in George Steinbrenner and Ewing Kauffman; a host of bad actors and phenomenal athletes; and lots of yelling. Players and club officials like Brett, Goose Gossage, Willie Randolph, Ron Guidry, Sparky Lyle, David Cone, and John Schuerholz offer fresh commentary on the events along with their take on a rivalry that culminated in one of the most iconic baseball tantrums of all time. Rush Limbaugh, employed by the Royals at the time as a promotions director, offers his own insider's perspective. Through this one fateful game, the ensuing protest, and ultimate fallout, The Pine Tar Game examines a more innocent time in professional sports, as well as the shifting tide that gave us today's modern iteration of baseball.

Download or read book Fall of the Big Top written by David Lewis Hammarstrom and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-04-25 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once an eagerly awaited spectacle, the traveling circus--that miracle of red wagons, trumpeting elephants and spangled trapeze artists that slipped into town at dawn and disappeared by midnight--has all but vanished from the American landscape. This work explores circus history from 1793 to the present and addresses the forces of modern culture (such as the popularity of Cirque du Soleil, and pressure from the animal rights movement) that are pushing big top shows toward what the author calls "circus ballet." Numerous photographs and in-depth interviews conducted with show owners, performers and directors enrich the narrative. Overall, the book reveals a sobering contrast between circuses of yesterday and today, even as it honors the outstanding performers who created, and have sustained, the enduring appeal of the circus.
