This book was released on 2016-09-25 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has published the Private Pilot - Airplane Airman Certification Standards (ACS) document to communicate the aeronautical knowledge, risk management, and flight proficiency standards for the private pilot certification in the airplane category, single-engine land and sea; and multiengine land and sea classes. This ACS incorporates and supersedes the previous Private Pilot Practical Test Standards for Airplane, FAA-S-8081-14. The FAA views the ACS as the foundation of its transition to a more integrated and systematic approach to airman certification. The ACS is part of the safety management system (SMS) framework that the FAA uses to mitigate risks associated with airman certification training and testing. Specifically, the ACS, associated guidance, and test question components of the airman certification system are constructed around the four functional components of an SMS: Safety Policy that defines and describes aeronautical knowledge, flight proficiency, and risk management as integrated components of the airman certification system; Safety Risk Management processes through which internal and external stakeholders identify and evaluate regulatory changes, safety recommendations and other factors that require modification of airman testing and training materials; Safety Assurance processes to ensure the prompt and appropriate incorporation of changes arising from new regulations and safety recommendations; and Safety Promotion in the form of ongoing engagement with both external stakeholders (e.g., the aviation training industry) and FAA policy divisions. The FAA has developed this ACS and its associated guidance in collaboration with a diverse group of aviation training experts. The goal is to drive a systematic approach to all components of the airman certification system, including knowledge test question development and conduct of the practical test. The FAA acknowledges and appreciates the many hours that these aviation experts have contributed toward this goal. This level of collaboration, a hallmark of a robust safety culture, strengthens and enhances aviation safety at every level of the airman certification system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two brilliant, multi-layered stories from the winner of the Kenzaburo Oe Prize: part of our Japanese novella series, showcasing the best contemporary Japanese writing. On the eve of the Iraq War, a man and a woman meet in a nightclub in Tokyo. They go to a love hotel, and spend the next five days in a torrid affair. Written in a stream of consciousness, with the reader's perceptions shifting and melting into one another, what is remarkable in this story is not what happens, but the ability of the writer to enter the minds and memories of the protagonists. In the second story, a woman living in a damp flat obsesses on the filthy state of her dwelling. She remains in bed for the duration of the narrative, but the drama and tension of her inner life - spiralling further and further into her memories and anxieties - keep the reader engrossed to the very end. The End of the Moment We Had demonstrates the fluidity and richness of this extraordinarily gifted writer's language and ideas.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide new pilots with a source of readily available information and act as a resource for instructors to transfer knowledge and visualize flight maneuvers. The information is intended to be found quickly when needed. Private Pilot Handbook is a reference book and has been developed specifically for those interested in acquiring or in need of a flight review for a Private Pilot License (PPL). Private Pilot Handbook covers a range of subject matters associated with Private Pilot Airman Certification Standards (ACS), Maneuvers, Oral/Written/Practical Exam Guide, VFR Communication Practices, ATC, and Comprehensive Private Pilot Glossary. Private Pilots must become familiar with continuously changing regulations and procedures. The Private Pilot Handbook is designed for student pilots, ground instructors, flight instructors, and others with a special interest in aviation. The main topics in private pilot training are briefly explained on a need-to-know basis, while topics students frequently have the most difficulty in are given in detail. Every pilot should be familiar with and use the current FAR-AIM, PilotOperation Handbook (POH), and Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM). The main sources used in the preparation of the Private Pilot Handbook are the aviation publications stated in the Airmen Certification Standards (ACS) in Figure 2B. For testing guidance, "underlined text and notes" cover questions asked in the written and practice exams.

Book excerpt: This is the only book a private pilot will ever need. It is the first instructor-approved preparatory guide for pilots preparing for their important biennial flight review test for pilot recertification. The BFR is a compendium of information written in easy-to-understand language on aerodynamics, night flying, cross-country planning, weather, new airspace regulations, maps, & Air Traffic Control (ATC communications), among many items covered. THE FLIGHT REVIEW GUIDE reviews short field takeoffs & landing, instrument interpretation, map reading, & most importantly, the methods of avoiding wake turbulence. In the section dealing with cross-country planning, flight terminology is reviewed in detail, including methods of using flight computers. FLIGHT REVIEW GUIDE sets forth essentially all of the information that a competent private pilot should have at his immediate disposal in simple, plain language, with many illustrations to assist understanding. It is all there in a nutshell. The new ABCs of airspace classification are covered & the various types of flight maneuvers are clear & understandable to the novice. "THIS IS A HANDY ITEM FOR THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR & PRIVATE PILOT PRIOR TO THE BFR & EVEN MONTHS AFTER. IT CAN BE READ IN AN HOUR & IS CERTAINLY A WORTHWHILE GUIDE FOR THE PILOT FACING THE ANNUAL OR BIENNIAL REVIEW."--Pat Chowning, Flying Review Magazine. Order from PROFESSIONAL PRESS, P.O. Book excerpt: The X-31 Enhanced Fighter Maneuverability Demonstrator was unique among experimental aircraft. A joint effort of the United States and Germany, the X-31 was the only X-plane to be designed, manufactured, and flight tested as an international collaboration. It was also the only X-plane to support two separate test programs conducted years apart, one administered largely by NASA and the other by the U.S. Navy, as well as the first X-plane ever to perform at the Paris Air Show. Flying Beyond the Stall begins by describing the government agencies and private-sector industries involved in the X-31 program, the genesis of the supermaneuverability concept and its initial design breakthroughs, design and fabrication of two test airframes, preparation for the X-31's first flight, and the first flights of Ship #1 and Ship #2. Subsequent chapters discuss envelope expansion, handling qualities (especially at high angles of attack), and flight with vectored thrust. The book then turns to the program's move to NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center and actual flight test data. Additional tasking, such as helmet-mounted display evaluations, handling quality studies, aerodynamic parameter estimation, and a "tailless" study are also discussed. The book describes how, in the aftermath of a disastrous accident with Ship #1 in 1995, Ship #2 was prepared for its outstanding participation in the Paris Air Show. The aircraft was then shipped back to Edwards AFB and put into storage until the late 1990s, when it was refurbished for participation in the U. S. Navy's VECTOR program. The book ends with a comprehensive discussion of lessons learned and includes an Appendix containing detailed information.
