Book excerpt: There’s more to the art world than auctions and appetizers. Behind the serious museum walls, one arts reporter has a sense of humor and she isn’t afraid to share it in this comedic romp through the art world. Featuring 30 short stories, Nadja Sayej plows through a food review of the Venice Biennale, butterfly kisses Cate Blanchett and talks performance art with Salma Hayek Oh and is it ‘biennial’ or ‘biennale?’ Nevermind that, where's the hor d'oeuvres? This book highlights a run in with A$AP Rocky at Miami Beach, calling Patton Oswalt from Marrakech and snoring her way through Documenta. There are cameos from Robert Crumb, doing vodka shots with Anish Kapoor and meeting Helmut Newton’s wife Jane Newton for her very first selfie. Join in on the chaos, the comedy and the bad pastry fillings you can't help but criticize. Author website http://nadjasayej.com

Book excerpt: What does the female gaze look like in celebrity photography? We are long beyond the time of a paparazzo being the "predator" and the actress being the "prey." Nowadays, more and more women photographers are on the streets, on the red carpet and behind the scenes at film festivals. The result? A sisterhood has emerged that shows stars in a different light. This new photography book comes from the lens one culture journalist who has been covering the entertainment world for years, Nadja Sayej. Featuring celebrities like Lady Gaga, Salma Hayek, Alicia Keys and Paris Hilton, this book features over 100 photos of celebrities, art stars and luminaries, up close and personal, taken between 2011 to 2022. Featuring photos of Sarah Jessica Parker, Marina Abramovic, Naomi Watts, Sofia Coppola, and more, this is a different light than we've seen them through the male gaze. They're not just objects of desire. With behind-the-scenes stories, essays and anecdotes, Sayej hopes to raise awareness of all the women photographers who spend their lives behind the lens—often fighting for their spots on the red carpet, in Hollywood or on the streets of New York. Is a woman paparazzo a more “gentle” photographer than a man? Why are women photographers still overlooked in the entertainment industry? Why don’t we know about more “great women paparazzo” photographers? There are none on the museum walls and so few women photographers become "household names." Why is that? From the art world to film festivals, backstage at concerts, fashion week front row and house parties, this is a backstage pass to the lives of the rich and famous. Consider it a photo diary from someone backstage, even if only for a fleeting moment, tracing the lineage of pop culture in a way we might never see again. “It’s a business of looks, if you don’t look good, you’re a fool.” -Joan Rivers

Book excerpt: For the past 15 years, pop culture journalist Nadja Sayej has interviewed over 500 celebrities, from A-listers to D-listers, 1980s heartthrobs to Instagram superstars and global icons. This compilation includes her best backstage stories from the red carpet, film festivals, art fairs and beyond, uncut and never seen before. In 25 candid short stories about her moments with the stars, she dishes on dinner with Kanye West in Miami, interviewing Salma Hayek in Venice and lunching with Steve Martin in Grand Central Station. Featuring backstage access over the past 10 years (2010 to 2020), it’s a peek into how she scored her major interviews with stars like Kathleen Turner, Spike Lee and Karl Lagerfeld, as well as what it has been like attending A-list events like Heidi Klum’s legendary Halloween party. This is all driven by her snarky observations, with photos taken by the female gaze. This book is released ahead of the 100 year anniversary of the red carpet, which is celebrated in 2022.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The most highly publicized of the infamous Young British Artists, Emin has stirred as much controversy as she has acclaim, being both highly personal and extremely original in her art. Emin's work is engaging, titillating, disturbing, and startlingly confessional. One of her most famous pieces is Everyone I Ever Slept With 1963-1995, a tent appliquEd with names. Another notorious work, My Bed--the scene where she spent four days contemplating suicide--was exhibited at Tate Britain when the artist was short-listed for the Turner prize in 1999. Though denounced by conservative critics at the outset, Emin's work has attracted serious critical attention for more than a decade. In the words of Art in America, "What brought Emin to prominence was shock value, but what keeps her work powerful as she continues is the strength and nuance of its form and content." Compiled in close collaboration with the artist herself--and unprecedented in its scope--this is the definitive book on Emin, featuring drawings, paintings, sculptures, appliquEs and embroideries, neon and video stills as well as her own writing."--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: This catalogue by Rebecca Warren is being published to document her show at the Kunstverein, Munich, which took place in 2013. The book includes images of Warrens works installed in the gallery as well as detail photographs and an in-depth interview with the artist. Warrens sculptures ebb from figuration to abstraction and range from amorphous to more clearly recognizable forms, which are sometimes sexual in nature and reference the body in challenging ways. Always evident in Warrens work is the negotiation between thought and process. Ideas (about authorship and authenticity) and influences (literary, psychological and pop cultural references in addition to variously audible echoes from art history) are filtered, distorted and often discarded as they find three-dimensional form. Her sculptures can be tender and droll. She often manages to both invoke and skewer the work of familiar male artists like Willem de Kooning, Lucio Fontana, Alberto Giacometti and cartoonist R. Crumb. However, while acknowledging a debt to certain key elements of Modernist Sculpture, her work also re-engages with them to produce new modes.

Book excerpt: REMEX presents the first comprehensive examination of artistic responses and contributions to an era defined by the North American Free Trade Agreement (1994–2008). Marshaling over a decade’s worth of archival research, interviews, and participant observation in Mexico City and the Mexico–US borderlands, Amy Sara Carroll considers individual and collective art practices, recasting NAFTA as the most fantastical inter-American allegory of the turn of the millennium. Carroll organizes her interpretations of performance, installation, documentary film, built environment, and body, conceptual, and Internet art around three key coordinates—City, Woman, and Border. She links the rise of 1990s Mexico City art in the global market to the period’s consolidation of Mexico–US border art as a genre. She then interrupts this transnational art history with a sustained analysis of chilanga and Chicana artists’ remapping of the figure of Mexico as Woman. A tour de force that depicts a feedback loop of art and public policy—what Carroll terms the “allegorical performative”—REMEX adds context to the long-term effects of the post-1968 intersection of D.F. performance and conceptualism, centralizes women artists’ embodied critiques of national and global master narratives, and tracks post-1984 border art’s “undocumentation” of racialized and sexualized reconfigurations of North American labor pools. The book’s featured artwork becomes the lens through which Carroll rereads a range of events and phenomenon from California’s Proposition 187 to Zapatismo, US immigration policy, 9/11 (1973/2001), femicide in Ciudad Juárez, and Mexico’s war on drugs.
