Book excerpt: New-York based photographer and culture journalist Nadja Sayej is known for her candid Q&As with celebrities—be it on Zoom or on the red carpet. Having interviewed over 500 stars, from Sarah Jessica Parker to Susan Sarandon and David Lynch, she’s always asked: “What is that celebrity really like?” In 33 candid short stories about her minute-by-minute moments with the stars, she answers that question. From dinner with Kanye West in Miami to interviewing Salma Hayek in Venice, or lunching with Steve Martin in Grand Central Station, each story is an adventure that details what the stars are like up close and personal, with behind-the-scenes photos and comedic tidbits. This book is an accumulation of the stories behind the stories as a culture journalist. Featuring backstage access over the past 10 years (2010 to 2020), it’s a peek into how she scored her major interviews with stars like Kathleen Turner, Spike Lee and Karl Lagerfeld, as well as what it has been like attending A-list events like Heidi Klum’s legendary Halloween party. This is all driven by her snarky observations, with photos taken by the female gaze.

Book excerpt: There’s more to the art world than auctions and appetizers. Behind the serious museum walls, one arts reporter has a sense of humor and she isn’t afraid to share it in this comedic romp through the art world. Featuring 30 short stories, Nadja Sayej plows through a food review of the Venice Biennale, butterfly kisses Cate Blanchett and talks performance art with Salma Hayek Oh and is it ‘biennial’ or ‘biennale?’ Nevermind that, where's the hor d'oeuvres? This book highlights a run in with A$AP Rocky at Miami Beach, calling Patton Oswalt from Marrakech and snoring her way through Documenta. There are cameos from Robert Crumb, doing vodka shots with Anish Kapoor and meeting Helmut Newton’s wife Jane Newton for her very first selfie. Join in on the chaos, the comedy and the bad pastry fillings you can't help but criticize. Author website http://nadjasayej.com

Book excerpt: This catalogue by Rebecca Warren is being published to document her show at the Kunstverein, Munich, which took place in 2013. The book includes images of Warrens works installed in the gallery as well as detail photographs and an in-depth interview with the artist. Warrens sculptures ebb from figuration to abstraction and range from amorphous to more clearly recognizable forms, which are sometimes sexual in nature and reference the body in challenging ways. Always evident in Warrens work is the negotiation between thought and process. Ideas (about authorship and authenticity) and influences (literary, psychological and pop cultural references in addition to variously audible echoes from art history) are filtered, distorted and often discarded as they find three-dimensional form. Her sculptures can be tender and droll. She often manages to both invoke and skewer the work of familiar male artists like Willem de Kooning, Lucio Fontana, Alberto Giacometti and cartoonist R. Crumb. However, while acknowledging a debt to certain key elements of Modernist Sculpture, her work also re-engages with them to produce new modes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This accessible introduction challenges fixed understandings of the geographical or conceptual "origins" of feminist performance, offering a fresh and open-ended guide to the moments and movements that have come to define this vital field. Designed for weekly use on performance studies courses, each of the book’s ten chapters highlights the key works of feminist performance, including performance art, live art, body art, activism, and theater. These milestones are all linked to acts of rupture and political reanimation, as artists broke with dominant understandings of gender, art, and value, that were taken to be insurmountable and static. Milestones are a range of accessible textbooks, breaking down the need-to-know moments in the social, cultural, political, and artistic development of foundational subject areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bryony Kimmings creates multi-platform art works which aim to provoke change. Through script and photographs this book documents the show I'm a Phoenix, Bitch, Kimmings' personal response to the trauma of having post-natal breakdown. In 2016, Bryony nearly drowned. Postnatal breakdowns, an imploding relationship and an extremely sick child left her sitting beneath the waves hoping she could slowly turn to shell. Two years later she was able to deal with life again, but wears the scars of that year like a dark and heavy cloak. Who do we become after trauma? How do we turn pain into power? How do we fly instead of drown? Bryony Kimmings returned to performance in 2018 with her first solo show in nearly a decade. A mythical legend performed straight from a heart still pulsing with pain. Combining personal stories with epic film, soundscapes and ethereal music, Bryony creates a powerful, dark and joyful work about motherhood, heartbreak and finding inner strength. "Bryony Kimmings' solo performance is acutely painful in places but it's actually an easy sell: this is an extraordinary piece of theatre. I'm a Phoenix, Bitch shows Kimmings is an artist of exceptional integrity, compassion, imagination and guts." (The Guardian) We will need new myths to survive the end of existence as we know it; for Bryony it is that of the invincible and fearless woman; a tale Bryony wishes she had known from birth.

But as Kate digs deeper, she learns that Margot had a growing list of powerful enemies—among them a shady art dealer who had been selling forged works by Margot. Kate soon uncovers a dirty trail that leads straight into the heart of the city's deadly underworld. Margot died for her art—and if Kate doesn't tread lightly, she could be the next to get brushed out.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The most highly publicized of the infamous Young British Artists, Emin has stirred as much controversy as she has acclaim, being both highly personal and extremely original in her art. Emin's work is engaging, titillating, disturbing, and startlingly confessional. One of her most famous pieces is Everyone I Ever Slept With 1963-1995, a tent appliquEd with names. Another notorious work, My Bed--the scene where she spent four days contemplating suicide--was exhibited at Tate Britain when the artist was short-listed for the Turner prize in 1999. Though denounced by conservative critics at the outset, Emin's work has attracted serious critical attention for more than a decade. In the words of Art in America, "What brought Emin to prominence was shock value, but what keeps her work powerful as she continues is the strength and nuance of its form and content." Compiled in close collaboration with the artist herself--and unprecedented in its scope--this is the definitive book on Emin, featuring drawings, paintings, sculptures, appliquEs and embroideries, neon and video stills as well as her own writing."--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: REMEX presents the first comprehensive examination of artistic responses and contributions to an era defined by the North American Free Trade Agreement (1994–2008). Marshaling over a decade’s worth of archival research, interviews, and participant observation in Mexico City and the Mexico–US borderlands, Amy Sara Carroll considers individual and collective art practices, recasting NAFTA as the most fantastical inter-American allegory of the turn of the millennium. Carroll organizes her interpretations of performance, installation, documentary film, built environment, and body, conceptual, and Internet art around three key coordinates—City, Woman, and Border. She links the rise of 1990s Mexico City art in the global market to the period’s consolidation of Mexico–US border art as a genre. She then interrupts this transnational art history with a sustained analysis of chilanga and Chicana artists’ remapping of the figure of Mexico as Woman. A tour de force that depicts a feedback loop of art and public policy—what Carroll terms the “allegorical performative”—REMEX adds context to the long-term effects of the post-1968 intersection of D.F. performance and conceptualism, centralizes women artists’ embodied critiques of national and global master narratives, and tracks post-1984 border art’s “undocumentation” of racialized and sexualized reconfigurations of North American labor pools. The book’s featured artwork becomes the lens through which Carroll rereads a range of events and phenomenon from California’s Proposition 187 to Zapatismo, US immigration policy, 9/11 (1973/2001), femicide in Ciudad Juárez, and Mexico’s war on drugs.
