Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the bond valence model, a description of acid-base bonding which is becoming increasingly popular particularly in fields such as materials science and mineralogy where solid state inorganic chemistry is important. Recent improvements in crystal structure determination have allowed the model to become more quantitative. Unlike other models of inorganic chemical bonding, the bond valence model is simple, intuitive, and predictive, and can be used for analysing crystal structures and the conceptual modelling of local as well as extended structures. This is the first book to explore in depth the theoretical basis of the model and to show how it can be applied to synthetic and solution chemistry. It emphasizes the separate roles of the constraints of chemistry and of three-dimensional space by analysing the chemistry of solids. Many applications of the model in physics, materials science, chemistry, mineralogy, soil science, surface science, and molecular biology are reviewed. The final chapter describes how the bond valence model relates to and represents a simplification of other models of inorganic chemical bonding.

Book excerpt: Nasal continuous positive airway pressure ventilation is the gold standard in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. Long-term compliance rates are about 60%. Therefore, several alternative treatment options are of special interest. Beside conservative therapies, various surgical concepts exist. The field of surgery for sleep disordered breathing has rapidly grown with new instrumentation and surgical techniques in the last 10 years. Surgeons in these fields have to attend scientific meetings, participate in workshops, and read the literature to stay up to date. In our sleep laboratories we conduct 30 polysomnographies each night. Each year, we perform almost 1,000 surgical procedures for sleep disordered breathing apart from numerous other conservative and apparative treatment modalities. Referring to our expe- ence and the present literature, we tried to give new information on surgical techniques in this second edition. The chapters are grouped in different anatomical fields of interest. We wanted to give general advice and specific new hints for the surgery of sleep disordered breathing so that the reader learns basic techniques followed by more advanced surgery. In addition to the illustrated surgical descriptions, the chapters contain informations about indications and contraindications of each surgical procedure and the postoperative care. Special interest has been dedicated to evidence-based medicine. So in each chapter, there is a table of references summarizing the effectiveness of the procedure and EBM grade.

Book excerpt: Despite the huge impact that biomaterials have had on patients' quality of life, improvements in device performance and the development of alternatives to augment available therapies are continuously being sought. This book explores the development and application of biomaterials over the past 25 years, examining the current clinical demand, the scientific rationale, and the technical challenges to be overcome. Furthermore, this book introduces the blood components involved in hemostasis and thrombosis, followed by the common biomaterials applied in blood-contacting devices. The complications induced by the interactions between blood and biomaterials is also briefly addressed, as well as the commonly used techniques for improving biomaterials' hemocompatibility. In addition, the authors give some valuable insight into calcium orthophosphate cements and concretes, as excellent biomaterials suitable for both dental and bone grafting application. Despite the growth of potential hydrogel based therapies, the route to market for new products is constrained by the need to develop an appropriate regulatory and metrological framework under which they will be assessed. This book outlines the role that metrology has to play in the regulation of emerging hydrogel-based therapies and detail possible strategies for assessing their safety and effectiveness. Other chapters examine the surface of CoCrMo alloy prior and after exposure into different solutions simulating oral conditions, recent research on delivery of gold nanoparticles inside the cells and their potential applications in nanomedicine, and the widely used biomedical applications for hydrogels.
