Download or read book Western Plainchant written by David Hiley and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plainchant is the oldest substantial body of music that has been preserved in any shape or form. It was first written down in Western Europe in the eighth to ninth centuries. Many thousands of chants have been sung at different times or places in a multitude of forms and styles, responding to the differing needs of the church through the ages. This book provides a clear and concise introduction, designed both for those to whom the subject is new and those who require a reference work for advanced study. It begins with an explanation of the liturgies that plainchant was designed to serve. It describes all the chief genres of chant, different types of liturgical book, and plainchant notations. After an exposition of early medieval theoretical writing on plainchant, Hiley provides a historical survey that traces the constantly changing nature of the repertory. He also discusses important musicians and centers of composition. Copiously illustrated with over 200 musical examples, this book highlights the diversity of practice and richness of the chant repertory in the Middle Ages. It will be an indispensable introduction and reference source on this important music for many years to come.

Book Synopsis The Library of Paradise by : David A. Michelson
Download or read book The Library of Paradise written by David A. Michelson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-13 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemplative reading is a spiritual practice developed by Christian monks in sixth- and seventh-century Mesopotamia. Mystics belonging to the Church of the East pursued a form of contemplation which moved from reading, to meditation, to prayer, to the ecstasy of divine vision. The Library of Paradise tells the story of this Syriac tradition in three phases: its establishment as an ascetic practice, the articulation of its theology, and its maturation and spread. The sixth-century monastic reform of Abraham of Kashkar codified the essential place of reading in East Syrian ascetic life. Once established, the practice of contemplative reading received extensive theological commentary. Abraham's successor Babai the Great drew upon the ascetic system of Evagrius of Pontus to explain the relationship of reading to the monk's pursuit of God. Syriac monastic handbooks of the seventh century built on this Evagrian framework. 'Enanisho' of Adiabene composed an anthology called Paradise that would stand for centuries as essential reading matter for Syriac monks. Dadisho' of Qatar wrote a widely copied commentary on the Paradise. Together, these works circulated as a one-volume library which offered readers a door to "Paradise" through contemplation. The Library of Paradise is the first book-length study of East Syrian contemplative reading. It adapts methodological insights from prior scholarship on reading, including studies on Latin lectio divina. By tracing the origins of East Syrian contemplative reading, this study opens the possibility for future investigation into its legacies, including the tradition's long reception history in Sogdian, Arabic, and Ethiopic monastic libraries.

Book Synopsis Theological Libraries and Library Associations in Europe by :
Download or read book Theological Libraries and Library Associations in Europe written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-08-15 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past 50 years, theological libraries have confronted secularisation and religious pluralism, along with revolutionary technological developments that brought not only significant challenges but also unexpected opportunities to adopt new instruments for the transfer of knowledge through the automation and computerisation of libraries. This book shows how European theological libraries tackled these challenges; how they survived by redefining their task, by participating in the renewal of scholarly librarianship, and by networking internationally. Since 1972, BETH, the Association of European Theological Libraries, has stimulated this process by enabling contacts among a growing number of national library associations all over Europe.

Book Synopsis Jacques Lefèvre d'Etaples and the Three Maries Debates by : Jacques Lefèvre D'Etaples
Download or read book Jacques Lefèvre d'Etaples and the Three Maries Debates written by Jacques Lefèvre D'Etaples and published by Librairie Droz. This book was released on 2009 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Three Maries pamphlets published in Paris by the celebrated humanist scholar Jacques Lefèvre d'Etaples appeared between 1517 and 1519, and are virtually his only venture into independent authorship. These four short Latin texts investigated the traditions of the Magdalen and the sisters of the Virgin, and the calculation of the triduum , or three days and nights between the Crucifixion and the Resurrection. Written in a spirit of profound piety, they nevertheless challenged notions of authority and powerful established devotional cults, at the very moment when Luther was mounting his own challenge to orthodoxy, and gave rise to a high-profile controversy which anticipated the response to Luther. This edition presents Lefèvre's Latin texts together with an English translation and an extensive introduction which situates the controversy in its contemporary cultural context, and thus throws new light on Lefèvre's exegesis and his distinctive Christian humanism. Latin and English text.
Book Synopsis The Apostolic Penitentiary in Local Contexts by : Gerhard Jaritz
Download or read book The Apostolic Penitentiary in Local Contexts written by Gerhard Jaritz and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-10 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume investigates the registers of fifteenth-century supplications to the Apostolic Penitentiary of the Holy See and presents an analysis of a multiplicity of issues in which a context of the local needs of Western Christians and the central power of the Pope occurred. The contributions make it clear that local and individual factors and the Christian faith and religion in practice must not be seen as separate from the global power of the Roman curia. The latter's influence could become directly important for any individual in any local space, even ...et usque ad ultimum terrae (Acts 1:8), in the utmost peripheries of the Christian world. It is shown that the assistance of the Apostolic Penitentiary was indispensable in a large variety of cases. Such cases were dealt with both in the local, regional space and in the globalized centre of the Holy See.
Book Synopsis The Cartulary of Prémontré by : Yvonne Seale
Download or read book The Cartulary of Prémontré written by Yvonne Seale and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2023-06-26 with total page 900 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cartulary of Prémontré offers a full critical edition, consisting of a transcription of the cartulary’s 509 charters together with historical notes and apparatus. The thirteenth-century cartulary of the abbey of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Prémontré is one of the few manuscripts to survive from this monastery. Offering a window into daily life in medieval France and to contemporary documentary practices, the cartulary of Prémontré is a rich source for the socio-economic and religious history of the Picardy and Champagne regions during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The charters contained in the cartulary illuminate how this major northern French abbey functioned as a mother house for the Premonstratensian Order, and how it interacted with people – both elite and non-elite as well as secular and ecclesiastical. It also reveals the complexities of cartulary production within a larger institutional and archival context. In an introductory essay, Heather Wacha and Yvonne Seale consider not only the history of the manuscript and of the abbey of Prémontré, but also the cartulary’s materiality, its place within the broader field of cartulary studies, and what it shows us about women’s roles in contemporary society. In doing so, this volume offers new connections between the field of cartulary studies and feminist studies.
