Book excerpt: Information analysis centers were developed to help the scientist and practitioner cope with the ever increasing mass of published and unpublished information in a specific field. Their establishment resulted from a further extension of those pressures that had brought about the formation of the specialized primary journal and the abstracting services at the turn of the century. The information analysis center concept was greatly advanced by the 1963 report of the President's Science Advisory Committee Panel on Science Information. This report stated: " . . . scientific interpreters who can collect relevant data, review a field, and distill information in a manner that goes to the heart of a technical situation are more help to the overburdened specialist than is a mere pile of relevant docu ments. " Such specialized information centers are operated in closest possible contact with working scientists in the field. These centers not only furnish information about ongoing research and dis seminate and retrieve information but also create new information and develop new methods of infor mation analysis, synthesis, and dissemination. The continually expanding biomedical literature produced by scientists from the world's laboratories, research centers, and medical centers led the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke in 1964 to initiate a National Neurological Information Network of specialized centers for neurological information. The Centers are designed to bring under control and to promote ready access to important segments of the literature.
Book Synopsis Oxford Handbook of Auditory Science: Hearing by : David R. Moore
Download or read book Oxford Handbook of Auditory Science: Hearing written by David R. Moore and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2010-01-14 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1: The Ear (edited by Paul Fuchs) Volume 2: The Auditory Brain (edited by Alan Palmer and Adrian Rees) Volume 3: Hearing (edited by Chris Plack) Auditory science is one of the fastest growing areas of biomedical research. There are now around 10,000 researchers in auditory science, and ten times that number working in allied professions. This growth is attributable to several major developments: Research on the inner ear has shown that elaborate systems of mechanical, transduction and neural processes serve to improve sensitivity, sharpen frequency tuning, and modulate response of the ear to sound. Most recently, the molecular machinery underlying these phenomena has been explored and described in detail. The development, maintenance, and repair of the ear are also subjects of contemporary interest at the molecular level, as is the genetics of hearing disorders due to cochlear malfunctions.

Download or read book Cochlear Implants and Hearing Preservation written by Paul van de Heyning and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electric acoustic stimulation (EAS) combines electric stimulation in the mid- to high-frequency regions with acoustic stimulation in the low-frequency range with the aim to preserve residual low-frequency hearing after cochlear implantation, which together particularly improves speech understanding, pitch discrimination and music appreciation. In this volume, the most experienced clinical groups share their understanding of the use of EAS in adults and children. It offers an in-depth audiological analysis related to selecting, preparing and rehabilitating EAS patients. Topics such as dead zone assessment, psychophysics of low-frequency hearing, electric-acoustic interaction, speech algorithms, music perception, as well as fitting and the patient's acceptance are discussed. Introductory chapters - illustrated with exceptional colour images - on cochlear neural reserves, molecular biology and high-technological electrode development focus on the basic scientific EAS research. Every ENT specialist, audiologist, speech therapist and scientist interested in inner ear pathology, involved in cochlear implantation or dealing with the treatment or surgery of the inner ear will benefit from the insights and experiences of the world's leading experts who contributed to this publication.
