Book excerpt: Human ecology is a synthetic transdisciplinary science concerned with human life and culture as a dynamic component of ecosystems. Typical of an interdisciplinary science is an approach which integrates topics under study across the usual traditional or classical branches of science Human ecology synthesizes part of the knowledge of several classical disciplines in a specific way. Of the many possible research orientations for understanding the relationship of people to their environment, not all are ecological, and only a few can be considered human ecology. More than 50 per cent of accumulated human knowledge is related to the study of man and some aspect of our environment. If we called all this knowledge human ecology, it would be a meaningless generalization, Because science has been based on the study of specific topics, for example such classic disciplines as physics, geology, biology, anthropology, and interactions such as genetics and ecology, or problems such as auxology and evolution, human ecology provides a definite transdisciplinary approach to study by assuming specific perspectives. Human ecology may be considered to have two parallel foci: (1) an academic human ecology as a scientific discipline, and (2) an action oriented human ecology which is technological (environmental engineering, environmental preservation, environmental education, and health protection against environmental deterioration.) In human ecology several categorical divisions and research perspectives may be defined and delimited into 4 main groups: 1 Philosophical problems of human ecology; 2. Social and biological problems of the human environment 3. Ecological problems of human biology 4. Cultural adaptive behavior. The works of about one hundred ninety persons were classified and included in this volume there are abstracts from others whose addresses are not included (sent by other authors, or by other institutions) but worthy of being added.

Book excerpt: The woodlands of Japan vary substantially from north to south, and the patterns of their use and abuse differed from area to area during the Edo, or early modern, period (1600–1868). Nevertheless, the basic characteristics and rhythms of forest history were common to all of Japan (except the sparsely populated northern island of Hokkaidō). It is possible, therefore, to illuminate the general experience by scrutinizing a section of the whole. The section selected here is Akita, a prefecture of northern Japan whose forests are among the nation’s most famous. Three considerations make this choice attractive. The topic has clearly delineated boundaries, largely because the Akita region was a single coherent political unit during the Edo period; the documentation on the early modern forest situation there is extensive and accessible; finally, and as a consequence of the second factor, Japanese scholars have already published excellent studies on key aspects of Akita forestry. These factors have made this a relatively convenient area to examine and discuss in the short compass of this study.

Book excerpt: Thailand in Transition goes beyond the conventional approach to Thai politics present in most of the literature, which concentrates on the traditional institutions in Thailand—the monarchy, the military, and the bureaucracy. The objective here has been rather to examine the more contemporary emergent oppositional forces struggling to play a permanent and significant role in the broader context of Thai politics. Oppositional forces in Thailand are many and varied, ranging from the outlawed Communist Party of Thailand (CPT), which seeks to overthrow the Thai government, to the Thai Parliament, which is usually legitimized as part of the the government for brief periods between military coups. The book focuses on the CPT, workers, students, and Parliament by presenting in historical perspective the origins, nature, and influence of each as an oppositional force in Thai politics. Special attention is given to the transitional role of these oppositional forces during and after the dramatic shifts in Thai politics precipitated by the student revolution of 1973, the military coup of 1976, the increased hostilities between the People's Republic of China (PRC) and Vietnam in 1979, and the abortive coup by the Thai "Young Turk" military faction in 1981.

Book excerpt: A Thai foodseller on the streets of Bangkok, a cyclo driver in a Vietnamese village, a Pahari migrant laborer in the Himalayas, a Parsi-Christian professional social worker shuttling back and forth between London and Calcutta—Trans-Status Subjects examines how these and other South and Southeast Asians affect and are affected by globalization. While much work has focused on the changes wrought by globalization—describing how people maintain foundations or are permanently destabilized—this collection theorizes the complex ways individuals negotiate their identities and create alliances in the midst of both stability and instability, as what the editors call trans-status subjects. Using gender paradigms, historical time, and geographic space as driving analytic concerns, the essays gathered here consider the various ways South and Southeast Asians both perpetuate and resist various hierarchies despite unequal mobilities within economic, social, cultural, and political contexts. The contributors—including literary and film theorists, geographers, historians, sociologists, and anthropologists—show how the dominant colonial powers prefigured the ideologies of gender and sexuality that neocolonial nation-states have later refigured; investigate economic and artistic production; and explore labor, capital, and social change.
