Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General Index to Hazlitt's Handbook and His Bibliographical Collections (1867-1889) After an unexpected, but not altogether avoidable, delay, the Index to my Handbook, 1867, and to my Collections, 1876 - 89, which Mr. Gray of Cambridge spontaneously offered to compile as a labour of love, is at length offered to the public, and cannot fail to prove a great boon to all whd may have hereafter occasion to consult the serial descriptive Cata lognes of Early English Literature published by me since 18 76, in common with the Handbook itself, the repository of much useful information, which there has been no reason to supersede Or repeat. The plan on which Mr. Gray has proceeded is unquestionably most elaborate and exhaustive, but that it errs on that side, I do not wish or mean to say; for my experience teaches me that the multiplication of entries, references, and cross-references can hardly be carried too far, looking at the manifold variety-of purposes for which such a work as mine, is apt to serve. The task has been laborious and irksome, I suspect, beyond Mr. Gray's worst or best expectations; and he is to be warmly congratulated on having finally brought it to a satisfactory close. I must add that for the principle and scale on which the Index is executed Mr. Gray is alone responsible. Here my system of periodical issues of the result of my study of the bibliographical product of the auction-rooms and of the stores of my good friends the booksellers must terminate. Whatever my future gleanings may be, they will necessarily remain in the manuscript form for my own personal use or that of my friends and fellow-labourers.
