Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bibliographical Notes on One Hundred Books Famous in English Literature The relations of author with printer or publisher, the success or failure of the books, matters of illustration, and marked peculiarities of editions, issues or volumes all these things are referred to at greater or less length. In some cases, the facts have been given with fullness; but in others, like that of the Shakespeare First Folio, about which so much has been written, it was thought unnecessary to enter into details. Many of the books in the list having been already the subjects of whole bibliographies, or, having been carefully collated in other works, full collations have not been thought desirable here. It should be noted, in this connection, that the collations of books printed before the eighteenth century are given by signatures, while of books published after 1700, the paginations are given. Works of more'than two volumes have not been collated in detail. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Bibliographic Notes On One Hundred Books Famous In English Literature: Compiled By Henry W. Kent This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Hundred Books Famous in English Literature: With Facsimiles of the Title-Pages These books must of necessity be national books; for fame, which is essentially the highest gift of which man has the giving, cannot be conferred ex cept by a public voice. Fame dwells upon the lips of men. It is not that memorable books must all be people's books, though the greatest are such - the Book of Common Prayer, the Bible, Shake speare; but those which embody some rare intel lectual power, or illuminate some seldom visited tract of the spirit, or merely display some peculiar taste in learning or pastime, must yet have some thing racial in them, something public, to secure their hold against the detaching power of time; they must be English books, not in tongue only, but body and soul. They are not less the books of a nation because they are remote, superfine, un common. Such are the books of the poets - the Faerie Queene; books of the nobles - Arcadia; books of the scholar - the Anatomy of Melan choly. These books open the national genius as truly, kind by kind, as books of knowledge exhibit the nation's advancement in learning, stage by stage, when new sciences are brought to the birth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature The writer of this volume has tried to furnish students and general readers with a clear and concise account of English literature and its makers from the beginnings to the present day. The influences of social and other movements on literary develop ment have been brought out in the brief introductions to the chapters. The biographies set forth the important facts of the authors' careers without extensive comment. This is in accord with the present writer's conviction that much ready-made inter pretation of conditions and motives, after the setting of an author's work and his characteristics have been made clear, is a hindrance rather than a help to students. Since literature is in a peculiar sense an expression of personality, an attempt has been made to sum up the personal traits of each prominent author in a para. Graph or two. Wherever an author's contribution has proved epoch-making in literary history, that fact is given special promi nence in a final summary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The International Library of Famous Literature, Vol. 13 of 20: Selections From the World's Great Writers, Ancient, Medieval, and Modern, With Biographical and Explanatory Notes and Critical Essays IF we accept Bution's famous dictum, that the style is the man, it might be expected that the writings of men of science would be as ruggedly fact-bound, as unimaginative, as inartistic as science is usually supposed to be. Yet Bufi'on himself, famed as a writer a century ago, and remembered to-day chiefly for his mastery of literary style, was by profession a naturalist. His greater contem porary, Voltaire, the master litterateur of France, did not hesitate to pose as a master in science as well. Again, Dante, the one world classic of the Italian language, was learned in every phase of the known science of his time. Keats, one of the few writers of English whom critics have ventured to name in the same breath with Shakespeare, was trained to the profession of medicine. Goldsmith, famed for the lucidity of his verse and prose alike, was a practising physician. So was Schiller, the second poet of Germany; while his one master in that tongue, the incomparable Goethe, whose genius raised the German language to a new plans as a medium of literary expression, would be remembered as a discoverer in science had he never penned a page that could be called literature. Turning to America we find that Franklin, the one man who attained distinction as a writer in Colonial days, was equally distinguished as a scientist; and everyone will recall that in a later day the most genial of poets, Holmes, made literature only a staff, to quote his own happy phrase, his crutch being medicine, and his specialty anatomy, the veritable dry bones of medicine at that. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical Summary of English Literature Anything in the nature of a cram-book on English literature lays its compiler open to the charge of literary vandalism and calls for a word at least of apology. It would not be impossible to defend the cram-book, in this case as in others, if it were necessary but the idea at the back of this summary is not wholly that of conveying information in a succinct tabloid form, In regard to important individual authors it draws attention to the salient facts of their outer life, to the leading characteristics of their work and to their place in literature. N o pretence to biographical or biblio graphical completeness is made but it is hoped that no important work has been overlooked and no date of any significance omitted. Similarly no desire of original criticism has been entertained, and the compiler's personal preferences and predilections have been as far as possible held in abeyance. Hence it is hoped that the book may be a safe and reliable guide to the student, helping him in the choice of what to read and drawing his attention to those opinions and criticisms which have become, by the wear and tear of the past, standard and unassailable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Printed Translations Into English of the Great Foreign Classics: A Supplement to d104-Books of English Literature This bibliography has been compiled with the view of supplementing existing text books on English literary history, and assisting students in preparing for examinations in Bibliography and Literature. It will also be found of service to those who are working for the professional examinations of the Library Association. Students of literature, more particularly of English literature, experience much difficulty in tracing the outside influences which at various periods, or, perhaps, speaking more correctly, at all periods, have affected or moulded our literature. The great foreign classics have exercised a direct and decided influence upon English literature and the object of this bibliography is to give in concise form the authors and titles, translations and dates of the first English translations of the chief foreign authors, and incidentally to enable students to note the effect of such translations on the works of many of our great imaginative writers. So far as it has been possible to discover, no work of this kind exists in this country. Students are frequently reminded of the special need for such a bibliography as this, and to all interested in the subject it should serve a useful purpose, and perhaps help to fill a gap in literary bibliography.
