Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Waiting World: Questions for the Last Half of the Christian Year The life Of a child, certainly his Sunday-school life, is too short for the microsc0pic study of the Scriptures. Much is accomplished if he be merely made acquainted with the great landmarks of the Word of God. It is the aim of these Questions to do for the Old Testament narrative what the book to which this is a companion does for the Gospels, namely, to furnish an outline that may be subse quently filled out by the scholar as circumstances shall permit. If, as the best authorities seem to agree in thinking, history is most profitably studied through biography, there can be no better way of teaching a child the story of the chosen people than by accustoming him to group the facts of each successive period around the person of the most conspicuous character the period affords. Upon this principle the following lessons have been planned. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible History: With Maps, Illustrations, Examination Questions, Scriptural Tables, and Glossary; For the Use of Colleges, Schools, Families, and Biblical Students Had I not seen many deficiencies in the Bible histories which have issued from the Catholic Press, I could not have been induced to write the present work. There is a sad desideratum common to them in the absence of information about the Bible itself, its writers, and the books of which it is composed. Fully one-half of the sacred volume is devoted to the doctrines, laws, discipline, and destiny of God's people. That portion of the Bible is the more important, both because its direct aim is the inculcation of faith and morals, and since, according to high authority, the Spirit of God was not accredited to the sacred writers as mere chroniclers of human affairs. A book which is based on the annals of the Hebrew nation and the records of primeval Christianity, and which omits the main work of the Holy Spirit, the Author of the sacred books, seems foreign to the scope of the Bible, and presents an historical edifice of a miraculous character without showing the foundation on which that structure stands. The Bible is a letter of the Almighty to the human race. Is it proper to dwell upon only a portion of that letter, and pass by in silence its Author and history? Besides, history, whether it be of the Synagogue or the Church, of the Greeks or the Romans, should be so written as not to break the flow of the narrative by the introduction of matter whose importance is not as great as that of the historical subject. This I have endeavoured to do in the following little volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Bible With this account of the building of the temple, imperfect as it is, we should at once close the present chap ter, were we not anxious to meet certain difficulties which we are aware, from personal experience, must afl'ect the mind of the reader while perusing some of the foregoing details. The sacrifice of Saul's descendants, for example, to gratify the vindictive feelin s of the Gibeonites, as well as the arting admonitions of avid to Solomon, respecting J cab, himei, and others, have been felt by many reflecting persons to militate, in appearance at least, against the con sistency of the sacred chronicles while the nature of Da vid's sin in numbering the people, with the terrible conse quences that followed, are matters well calculated to perplex even the most sober-minded. We frankly acknowledge, that after consulting a host of commentators, we have not been able entirely to elucidate the mystery which attaches to some of these transactions; but of the fruits of our re searches, the following may be taken as a compend. They are printed on the suggestion of the authorities of the Sunday School Union, in the hope that they may introduce a larger audience to the studies with which they are concerned By the title, The Construction of the Bible, is meant not so much the origin of its contents in the minds of the writers - a subject which Opens up the great question of inspiration, its mode and method - as the putting together of the several parts of Scripture in one volume. This story of construction, therefore, is wholly literary and historical. At the same time it is necessary to be in some degree acquainted with it if we would understand the mutual relations of the various parts of what is seen to be a slowly unfold.
