Book Synopsis Easton's Bible Dictionary by : M. G. Easton
Download or read book Easton's Bible Dictionary written by M. G. Easton and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-19 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Easton's Bible Dictionary is a classic book of definitions which serves to explain and clarify the meaning of the names, places, and words found in the Bible. Many Christians and scholars who read the Bible often remain unawares of the meanings or significance of the Holy Book's vocabulary. Such words are often derived from Ancient Hebrew or other old scripts, which makes it even more difficult for readers who only speak English to understand. Location names, in the context of ancient geography, are likewise hard to scrutinize - yet Easton's Dictionary not only explains what these places are, but their size and overall impact across the entire Bible. First published in 1893, this dictionary uses the authoritative King James Bible as its source. As well as containing definitions and accounts of the many terms found throughout the Old and New Testaments, Easton's Bible Dictionary points out the significance of certain things and exactly where mentions of such phenomena appear in the Bible. The presence and significance of iron, for example, is noted in the Books of Genesis, Chronicles, Ezekiel, Deuteronomy, Isaiah, Job, Joshua, Kings and in the Psalms. Individuals in the Bible are also given biographical definitions. Through Easton's referencing of the names, we can discover the exact Bible passages where such figures are mentioned. Likewise we hear of terms relevant to the life of the ancient peoples; the term 'Levy' for instance is shown to equate to a form of involuntary recruitment which kings ordered. Words in frequent use today, such as 'Schism', are also shown to originate from the Bible. Other words we use today - such as 'Teeth', are shown to have been informal terms: 'cleanness of teeth' in Amos 4:6 denotes an outbreak of famine, for example. Many of the parables and tales of the Bible are retold in abbreviated form in Easton's Bible Dictionary. These retold anecdotes reference other relevant passages, further evidencing how the various portions of the Bible are interconnected and related to one another. Such a style also gives this unconventional dictionary a flowing quality, making it easier for the reader to enjoy large tracts of this text without pause. The ancient world of the Biblical canon is given life and color by Easton's descriptions. Primarily however, Easton's masterwork is designed for reference. Yet it not only defines the individual entries, but places these entries in their proper context throughout both the Old and New Testaments. Owing to this wealth of information, the reader may perceive that Easton's Dictionary is not merely a book of definitions, but an authoritative and significant work of classic Christian literature.
Book Synopsis Evolution and Christian Faith by : Joan Roughgarden
Download or read book Evolution and Christian Faith written by Joan Roughgarden and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Click here to visit evolutionandchristianfaith.org "I'm an evolutionary biologist and a Christian," states Stanford professor Joan Roughgarden at the outset of her groundbreaking new book, Evolution and Christian Faith: Reflections of an Evolutionary Biologist. From that perspective, she offers an elegant, deeply satisfying reconciliation of the theory of evolution and the wisdom of the Bible. Perhaps only someone with Roughgarden's unique academic standing could examine so well controversial issues such as the teaching of intelligent design in public schools, or the potential flaws in Darwin's theory of evolution. Certainly Roughgarden is uniquely suited to reference both the minutiae of scientific processes and the implication of Biblical verses. Whether the topic is mutation rates and lizards or the hidden meanings behind St. Paul's letters, Evolution and Christian Faith distils complex arguments into everyday understanding. Roughgarden has scoured the Bible and scanned the natural world, finding examples time and again, not of conflict, but of harmony. The result is an accessible and intelligent context for a Christian vision of the world that embraces science. In the ongoing debates over creationism and evolution, Evolution and Christian Faith will be seen as a work of major significance, written for contemporary readers who wonder how-or if-they can embrace scientific advances while maintaining their traditional values.

Book excerpt: Biblical faith is a lens for viewing life, and Jack Seymour refreshingly illustrates how the reading of scripture is a resource for ongoing theological reflection connecting experience, vocation, daily life, and faith. Teaching has concrete consequences affecting the very ways people of faith view the world and make decisions for living. It matters; it makes a difference in how people think and act. Written in an accessible style, the book provides a manageable way to inspire conversation about the many ways the Bible can be taught, the purposes and outcomes of each approach, and how biblical wisdom shapes personal and corporate decision-making. Useful strategies for leading group Bible study help congregations respond faithfully to the Biblical witness and cultivate a whole congregation approach to Bible study. "Seymour provides guidance on what it means to be a teacher and how to teach Christian faith, suggesting that teachers are like animators who envision and enliven the biblical stories and invite people to make connections in life." Download or read book God is Love written by Anthony Kelly and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him" (1 John 4:16). In this famous passage, St. John expresses the heart of the Christian faith and the essence of the Christian image of God. In the same verse, he also offers a kind of summary of the Christian life: "We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us." In God Is Love, Anthony Kelly, CSSR, takes this phrase as a concise and profound expression and unpacks it for thinking Christians today. He explores seven ideas that are necessarily implied in the love that God is-the Trinitarian terms, Father, Son and Holy Spirit; the cross and resurrection as events within the paschal mystery; the church as the revelation of God's love being worked out in history; and finally, the ultimate hope for eternal life and heaven itself.

Book Synopsis Living in the Balance of Grace and Faith by : Andrew Wommack
Download or read book Living in the Balance of Grace and Faith written by Andrew Wommack and published by Destiny Image Publishers. This book was released on 2011-06-24 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular Bible teacher and host of the Gospel Truth broadcast, Andrew Wommack takes on one of the biggest controversies of the church, the freedom of God's grace verses the faith of the believer. Wommack reveals that God's power is not released from only grace or only faith. God's blessings come through a balance of both grace and faith. Addressing many of the misconceptions believers are taught in the Church today, this book opens up the Scriptures revealing the vital connection between grace and faith. Many believers think they walk in both grace and faith when actually they are misusing one or both of these principles. Wommack addresses: * Some believers willingly sin believing Gods grace will cover them, while the blessing of grace is not to sin, but to release guilt and condemnation when they make a mistake. * Other believers think they must "work" their faith by ritualistic prayer, confession, or Bible study. Although all these things are good, Jesus Christ set believers free from works of the law. God wants a relationship where He can communicate directly to each believer. * Grace and faith work together. When believers receive the unmerited favor or grace of God, they can release their faith without doubt or reservation and receive God's blessings. Andrew Wommack in his logical, practical style brings believers back on track in their Christian walk through living in the balance of grace and faith.
