Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Dogmatics and Notes on the History of Dogma Space forbids mention of the leading books in general Theology, Dogmatics and History Of Dogma studied during more than half a century Of reading in four languages. In the preparation of this handbook original sources have been used as far as available, but it has not been found desirable to encumber the text with a great mass Of notes and references. The book is not based upon another, but with the exception of terms and quoted definitions it is an attempt at presenting the result Of assimilation and investigation with the Object previously stated. It is my earnest hope that this manual of Christian Dogmatics may serve as a guide for devoted students of Scripture and Of our Lutheran Confessions, and an aid in the faithful exposition of both. God can make His Word prevail in the world without theology. But at a time when human thought is so often confused and perverted by fantastic ideas and theories, spun out of men's own minds, it is evident that it is almost impossible to preserve the Divine Word with out the most passionate intellectual effort to te-think its mean ing and its content. The simple Christian may, it is true, under stand and preserve God's Word without theology; but for those Christians who are involved in the thinking of their own day, and who, as children of their own day, are deeply influenced by these currents of thought, an all-inclusive and thorough effort to re-think what has been given' 'to faith ls absolutely indis pensable. This is particularly true for those whose calling it is to proclaim this faith to others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Faith, Vol. 2: A System of Dogmatics Following the principle of division which we laid down at the beginning of our Dogmatics proper (p. 319 f.); we now come to our section upon Here we follow up what we said regarding the nature of God, after having defined it more fully, as in the nature of the case we have to do, in the light of God's relation to the world and especially the sinful world. We deal first of all with the fundamental questions of method: What are attributes ? What is the significance of speaking of the attributes of God ? How are they to be classified? The concept "attributes" may be elucidated by a simple explanation. We know the nature of a thing from its effects; for what produces no effect whatever upon us does not exist so far as we are concerned, being unknowable by us. This is indisputable because self-evident, if we leave the matter in this general form. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Meditation of Jesus Christ: A Contribution to the Study of Biblical Dogmatics It will be noticed by some that the method of this book is substantially the same as that followed in my little volume on The New and Living Way, which was published about a year ago. Both these discussions are in fact fragments of a larger treatise which has been slowly growing in my hands for many years, and which I hope to publish at some future day. The aim throughout is to furnish the reader with a purely scriptural presentation of God in Christ reconciling the world unto himself. In the present volume I have perhaps made a slight departure from the biblical method in my second chapter, where a brief notice is taken of the ideals of incarnation traceable among the various nations. But even this exception is so in touch with biblical conceptions of incarnate mediation that no reader, we hope, will find fault with our calling attention to the interesting facts, and our supplying in footnotes a few references to the sources from which our statements have been derived, and where further information may be found. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Creation and Redemption, Vol. 2: Dogmatics During my last visit to the United States, which took place shortly after the publication of the first volume of the Dogma tics, a theological colleague expressed the desire that I would develop further the point of View contained in my book, The divine-human Encounter (wahrheit als Begegnung). He urged that he regarded this view as decisive for the develop ment of theology, and that he wished me to expand it within the whole framework of Christian doctrine. I replied, that I had already made a beginning in The Christian Doctrine of God, and that what I had begun in that volume was being expanded in two later volumes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Faith, Vol. 1: A System of Dogmatics Throughout the work I have sought to improve the contents; e.g. At the outset, in the definition of the Nature of Religion, the influence of the most recent discussions on Schleiermacher and Calvin as well as on the History of Religion and Philosophy will be Observed. The systematic scheme of Apologetics is largely re written, the section On Providence, Origin of Sin, etc. By means of the former alteration I hope that I have met the objections referring to the epistemological foundation of my Dogmatics, to the efl'ect that I have under-estimated the most recent metaphysical essays, or at all events have not sufficiently recognized the task incumbent on the theologian, of exhibiting not merely the limits of knowledge, but the unity Of faith and knowledge. I was specially concerned when treating the points that fall to be considered in the, case, to elucidate the prin ciple that our Christian Faith has not to do with a multiplicity of so-called mysteries, but with a real mystery which forms a unity, one that has been re vealed in God's gracious approach to man, but which also continually occasions fresh enigmas, while giving the assurance of eternal deliverance from them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Dogmatics, Vol. 12: A Compendium of the Doctrines of Christianity The work of the learned and pious Dr Martensen, Bishop of Seeland, in Denmark, which is now presented in an English dress, was originally written in Danish, and has gone through several editions. A German translation of it soon appeared, but the Author not being satisfied with that rendering of his work, re-wrote it himself in German, and the present English version is a translation of this later German edition prepared by Dr Martensen himself. The work is what we call a text-book, or manual of Chris tian Dogma; and while here and there the English reader may perceive a degree of abstruseness in the method of treat ing certain doctrines, the Doctrine of the Trinity, for example, - which is only a reflection of the profoundness of the Author's thought, he will find throughout, a clearness and conciseness, not always to be met with in German theo logical works. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Dogmatics, Vol. 2: A Text-Book for Academical Instruction and Private Study I. There is no fact from which we can more safely start upon our investigation, than the generally recognised phenomenon that no mortal upon earth is really happy. The well-known saying of Solon to Croesus is not seriously contradicted by any one; but it does not merely declare that we cannot be sure of that happiness before death; it rather signifies that true happiness is, from its very nature, wanting to us all. IS happiness nothing else but the harmony between our wants and our condition? Then the constant condition of man is best described by one word - discord. Discord in his own inner life, between reason and faith, between heart and conscience, between will and action. Discord between ourselves and other men, who apparently go with us, but are really opposed to us.l Discord above all with God, without whom we cannot live, and to whom we cannot draw nigh. Our peace is every moment disturbed by painful recollections, sad experiences, and sorrowful prospects. That condition does not proceed from causes external to us, because even where outward circumstances have been Changed in the desired direction, it continues to exist; it cannot be Changed nor reasoned away. The heart has no rest, because the conscience has no peace; the conscience has no peace. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biblical Dogmatics The introduction will define dogmatics, describe the essence of Christianity, its foundation in revelation, the source of Christian doctrines, and sketch a scheme by which the principal heads of Christian doctrine may be suitably arranged. The Subject Defined. Dogmatics is the systematic presentation of the doctrines of Christianity. It is customary to divide the study of theology into four departments: exegetical, historical, systematic and practical. Dogmatics is a branch of systematic theology. It applies the results of exegetical study of the Bible and of the historical study of Christianity to the connected and orderly presentation of the truths of the Christian religion. The eminent German theologian, F. H. R. Frank, called his dogmatics "The System of Christian Truth." That is what dogmatics aims to be. System is not simply arrangement, but such arrangement as shows the interrelation, the connection and dependence of the parts which constitute a whole. For example, the arrangement of doctrinal material, introduced by Melanchthon and in vogue for some time after the Reformation, under heads called Loci, did not constitute a system. The name Dogmatics, first applied in the seventeenth century, came into general use in the eighteenth century, as in Buddeus' Institutiones Theologiae Dogmaticae. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyday Christians need practical and accessible theology. In this handbook first published in 1890, Charles Octavius Boothe simply and beautifully lays out the basics of theology for common people. "Before the charge 'know thyself,'" Boothe wrote, "ought to come the far greater charge, 'know thy God.'" He brought the heights of academic theology down to everyday language, and he helps us do the same today. Plain Theology for Plain People shows that evangelicalism needs the wisdom and experience of African American Christians. Walter R. Strickland II reintroduces this forgotten masterpiece for today. Lexham Classics are beautifully typeset new editions of classic works. Each book has been carefully transcribed from the original texts, ensuring an accurate representation of the writing as the author intended it to be read.
